I believe it was Buffy St.Marie.....??

Do you have the full lyrics to Codine? I have two verses but there's more. Robert

I agree, Buffy St Marie. UNIVERSAL SOLDIER is in the Digital Tradition database. One way to find the lyrics is by typing [universal soldier] )in square brackets as shown)in the DigitTrad lyrics search box above.

From: Tiger
Date: 25 Oct 99 - 06:27 PM

And here's Cod'ine. Great sons both. Lots of speculation about whether it's 'reel' or 'real' - I've heard both but prefer reel.

COD'INE
(Buffy Sainte-Marie)

GUITAR INTRO

My belly is a-cravin', I got a shakin' in my head,
I feel like I'm dying, and I wish I was dead.
If I live 'til tomorrow, that'll be a long time,
But I'll reel and I'll fall and I'll rise on cod'ine,
And it's reel, and it's reel, one more time.

Well, when I was a young girl, I learned not to care
For whiskey, and from it I often did swear.
My mother and father said, "Whiskey's a curse."
But the fate of their baby was many times worse,
And it's reel, and it's reel, one more time.

Stay away from the cities; stay away from the town,
Stay away from the man pushin' codeine around,
Stay away from the stores where the remedy is fine,
For better your pain than be caught on cod'ine,
And it's reel, and it's reel, one more time.

You'll forget you're a woman, you'll forget about men,
Try it just once, and you'll try it again.
You'll forget about life, you'll forget about time,
And you'll live off your days as a slave to cod'ine,
And it's reel, and it's reel, one more time.

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK

But, if I die tomorrow, still one thing I've done,
I've heeded the warning that I got when I was young.
My one satisfaction, it comes when I think
That I'm livin' my life without bendin' to drink,
And it's reel, and it's reel, one more time.

And my belly is a-cravin'; I got a shakin' in my head,
I feel like I'm dying, and I wish I was dead.
If I live 'til tomorrow, that'll be a long time,
But I'll reel and I'll fall and I'll die on cod'ine,
And it's reel, and it's reel, one more time.

It was published in Sing Out at some point I think. "Real vs reel" could be figured out from that.

I think I learned this from the Buffy St. Marie song book. I will try to transcribe it in my inimitable way.

Dropped D, DADGBD

D...D7..G6...D/F#..A7/D...A7..A7/B..F/C..G/D..D/A
0...0...0.....0......0....0....0.....3....5....0
0...3...2.....0......0....0....0.....3....5....0
0...0...0.....4......2....2....2.....X....X....X
2...2...0.....2......0....0....0.....X....X....X
3...3...3.....3......3....2....0.....X....X....X
0...0...0.....0......0....0....0.....X....X....X

D..............D7................G/B..........D
My belly is a-cravin', I got a shakin' in my head,
...D/F#......................A/D.........A7...A7/B..A7
I feel like I'm dying, and I wish I was dead.
......D.........D7
If I live 'til tomorrow,
.........G/B.......A/D..A7..A7/B..A7
that'll be a long time,
..........D.............D7............G/B........D
But I'll reel and I'll fall and I'll rise on cod'ine,
..............,D7..........G/B..F/C>G/D..F/C...D/A
And it's reel,.. and it's reel, one..... more time.

F/C>G/D indicates a quick slide.

Enjoy the music.

Ah, the old "terpin hydrate and codeine elixir."

Used to get it when I was in kollitch (over the counter at the drugstore then, 'til they got wise) - it would ream out your throat going down, then a warm afterglow - BUT, no more congestion!

I never inhaled.

You might want to check out Buffy Sainte-Marie's live rendition of Codine on the 1964 Newport Folk Festival Evening Concerts, Vol I album. It's powerful! The album pops up now and again in used record stores.

I used to have a three album (vinyl) set of recordings from the 1964 Newport folk festival (the year I appeared on the planet) and I loved it. Lent it to a colleague who stole it.

When I see things that remind me of the loss of these albums I miss them all over again, Codiene was always one of my favourites, it also had a blinding version of Tom Dooley, but I can't remember by who.

Nostalgia time

Stu

From: Peace

Must admit that while I love Universal Soldier, my favourite of all her songs is the following (from her site)

PINEY WOOD HILLS
Buffy Sainte-Marie
© Gypsy Boy Music-SOCAN

This is a love song for home, wherever a person finds it. As I've travelled around the world, there have been many places that made the song feel new to me. Bobby Bare made it a country hit in 1967.

I'm a rambler and a rover
and a wanderer it seems
I've traveled all over
chasing after my dreams
But a dream should come true
and a heart should be filled
and a life should be lived
in the piney wood hills

I'll return to the woodlands
I'll return to the snow
I'll return to the hills
and the valley below
I'll return like a poor man
or a king if God wills
but I'm on my way home
to the piney wood hills

I was raised on a song there
I done right I done wrong there
and it's true I belong there
and it's true it's my home

From ocean to ocean
I've rambled and roamed
and soon I'll return
to my piney wood home
Maybe someday I'll find
someone who will
love as I love my piney wood hills

I was raised on a song there
I done right I done wrong there
and it's true I belong there
and it's true it's my home

I'll return to the woodlands
I'll return to the snow
I'll return to the hills
and the valley below
I'll return like a poor man
or a king if God wills
but I'm on my way home
to the piney wood hills.

Are there coincidences? I wasn't going to do computer stuff tonight, I was going to be a good girl and get some sleep. But Mudcat called.

For many years I have been entranced by music of the British Isles, but I discovered Buffy just a year before I graduated high school (it would have been 1970-1), and loved her music. All of it. Was a bit disappointed by the later stuff-- her voice and delivery were so grand that too much instrumentation really detracted I thought.

Just tonight I was looking at an email from my 16 year old niece reminding me I had promised her my Buffy Ste. Marie albums! just the other day... and wanting to know when I was going to deliver them.

Circles and Cycles...

Well, I couldn't resist, I had to go find those albums--
I had forgotten all of the traditional ballads she recorded: Reynardine, Lord Randall and the like... the songs she penned are so memorable it is easy to forget how many of these she recorded.

Buffy St., Marie, is of the First Nations Crow tribe from Canada.
I love, and often sing her Piney Wood Hills and am glad to see that
she has gone on to become an educator, developing a math tutoring
program for native students, and has been awarded the Canadian Juno award. She also has done a lot to encourage native youth to express
themselves thru their art.
See her Creative Native home page/web site some of her latest appearances have been as a speaker.
She was born on a Cree reservation in Qu'Appelle Valley, Saskatchewan.
She received a PHD, and now works with education. Visit Cradleboard to learn more.

A long time back - would have had to been late 70s or early 80s - my kids were watching Sesame Street when I walked in to the room and looked at it. I yelled something like "Holy S***, that's Buffy!" The kids looked at me as though I'd gone strange (they used to look at me that way quite often) and said something like, "Well, yeah. So?"

Peter.
