Here on the Lizard it's around £2.60 - £2.80 I got in from Clonakilty tonight and over there it was 2.8 Euros which at the current rate of exchange is about £1.80.
The taste was different. Guiness may aim for consistency but this wasn't the case. I didn't detect any difference in temperature.

It's a magic place and the music is an experience not to be missed.
Regards
John

It varies widely in Boston but most places it's around $3.50 to $4 per pint in a bar. Generally cheaper in the Irish pubs but not necessarily. The four-pack of draught cans are roughly $5.99 (I think that's what I paid the other night for one). Good idea to buy it on sale and stock up!

Let us just say there's nothing that rids the mouth of the taste of the Black Liquidation.

By the way, when did Guinness become trendy? Every freakin' bar in Orlando seems to have a tap. There's an Icelandic pub in Mount Dora, a sleepy little, antique-selling town 30 miles north of Orlando that has it on draught - I does not go with pickled herring, by the way.

I had two pints for lunch today along with a wonderful sourdough bread bowl or lobster bisque. The server asked me 3 times if I wanted a glass of water - wonder if he couldn't imagine someone wanting to leave the taste of Guinness lingering in his mouth.

Johnny Handle used to do a tale where the punchline was the fact that Guinness was a mixture of frog's piss and soot.

Brendan Behan - when told the Guinness family had been good to the people of Ireland - was fond of pointing out that the people of Ireland had been pretty good to the Guinness family also.

About right I'd say.

Just managed to get hold of this year's 'freebies' (no questions asked) The bodhran is not a bad tone, and allows variations with the fingers behind the 'skin'(plasic two ended beater). The hat is large, in the shape of 4 Guinness glasses on a tray, and 100% polyester. (foam padding, velour type outer, silk type lining)The 'T'Shirt is black with a portrait of a Guinness glass back and front, wording "The St.Patrick's Party" (front)"Celebrate with Guinness" (back) and "St.Patrick's 2003 (left sleeve)
As Freebies these are nice items.

In Mississippi, Draught goes for around $4.00 a pint. 4-pack of cans-$6-$7.00. Bottles-$6-$7.00

I offered a pint to a friend who had never tasted it before. She drank it and said, "Not bad, but you need to carry a dog with you wheneevr you drink it, so you can lick the dog's butt to get the taste outta your mouth"!

In Orlando, FL:

16 oz pints run from $3.75 to $5.00 depending on the "quality" of the bar serving them.

My two favorite haunts are Claddah Cottage ($3.75) and The Bull & Bush ($4.00)

non-authentic Irish or English pubs usually charge more and keep it cooler - I've asked why and it's because they usually keep the keg in the same refridgerator with the rest of the kegs instead of having a different one installed. Hence the Black Liquidation is less flavorful and less creamy.

The 4 pack of cans ges for about $7.00 to $8.50. Sometimes it's on sale.

The 6 pack of bottles should be discontinued - that Guinness sucks!

Anyone visiting the Orlando area, PM me and I'll take you out for a pint!

Still selling Guiness at £1.80 at the Sunday Singaround in the Monty club, SE9.It is one of the few times I drink it during the week.It is so good there that I pass on the London Pride at £1.60p. Guiness is cheaper in the local Wetherspoons but there is no live music to go with it and hardly any atmosphere. Unfortunately on Sunday there was no Dave B - Has anyone seen him?.
This year there will be a St Patrick's night at the club with probably the same rather large Guiness hats described by Nigel. They seem to have an endless supply of them. But I have never got my hands on one. Perhaps this year.

With a Guinness thread already up and running, this is the very place to comment.
This year's St Patricks Day promotion (in the U.K.) will be offering big Guinness hats (similar to last year's) and small plasticised Bodhrani (correct plural???).The pubs have also received a small supply of 'face paints' (perish the thought)
Last years gifts were large hats and mini fiddles, the fiddles were electronic, and putting the wire of the bow in contact with any two of the 'strings' produced an individual note from one of half-a-dozen tunes. Repeating the action with suitable timing did allow any of the tunes to be played. The tunes included 'Auld Langs Syne', 'Ode to Joy', 'You Are My Sunshine' and 'Greensleeves'. Clearly a very Irish selection

Just a word on the quality, fo what it's worth.

Guinness, bear in mind, is a non-live product (except for the bottled version at the time of bottling). The fermentation is stopped and the product is blanketed under pressurised nitrogen in order to retain the liquid as inert as possible.

The principal controlling influences over serving are the cleanliness of the pipes and the serving temperature. Dirty pipes may or may not have any noticeable effect on the perceived quality, but the serving temperature does have a noticeable effect.

Interestingly, there is a huge urban myth that "Irish Guinness is better than English Guinness" - mainly perpetuated by people who drink the stuff only rarely. The aim of the brewery is consistency, worldwide, no matter where the particular batch was brewed.

The actual difference is that in Ireland they generally seem to serve it colder these days, as compared to in England. The effect is that in Ireland, you get less of the real taste. So those who claim Guinness is better in Ireland are really happier with getting less of the real taste - this is neither a good thing nor a bad thing, just a consequence.

As a regular, sometimes even copious, Guinness drinker, I have to say that I generally find it to be extremely consistent, and that when I don't enjoy it, it's more to do with my mood and surroundings at the time, rather than any scientific difference in the quality of the drink.

Now Real Ale, that's another thing altogether.

cheers, Terry

I'll hafta check, but MY "local" sells the "can" (with the plastic fishing bobber) for $3.75. Last time I was at McGurk's in St. Louis' Soulard district it was $2.50 for a drawn 16oz pint and drawn nicely by a sweet lookin gal from Derry. That WAS a few years ago.

As I mentioned many times before, I am conducting a one man campaign for our local to install the proper draught system. I am beginning to think that Dennis is resisting the idea because he makes more on the cans!

A "four pack" of cans is around $8 and sometimes one can get a six pack of bottles for the same price at Walmurg's.

When in Atlanta a couple of years ago I was at a sports bar in the Mariott and the barkeep talked me into trying another stout when I had asked for Guinness. "If you don't think that this is better than Guinness, I'll give you the Guinness free". I drank deeply of what was the best "wrap yer tongue around this" libation I have EVER had the pleasure to swallow. Unfortunately I was unable to remember the name of that wonderful brew. I think that it was something like McPherson's but I have had no luck in rediscovering the stout. I had to leave early the next AM and haven't been back to Atlanta since.

Could any of you give me a brew clew?

CB

Personally I'm a draught bitter drinker and pay from £1.90 to £2.30 a pint in most of the pubs I frequent. If I go to one of Tim Martin's "Wetherspoons" pubs I can get a pint for as little as £1.20 (or even less when they've got their special promotions/festivals on).

BTW Raedwulf, I can get a reasonable pint of mild in quite a few of the pubs which I go to - Shepherd Neame do a reasonable brew. Unless there is a regular demand for it though, it has to be kept on top pressure. Up to about 25 years ago it was available at most pubs down south - even Watney's brewed it!

Norfolk England: £2.60 a pint seems about the norm, at least in most of the "Pubmasters". Cheap round here would be £2.20 - £2.30.

Declan, I think turnover has something to do with your observation. The places where it is cheap and there are plenty of people drinking the stuff do seem to have the best pints. Push the price up, fewer drinkers, stuff sits around longer... My theory anyway.

Cheapest in Dublin is about 3 Euro, but you can pay up to 5 Euro for a pint if you drink in the right??? places. But it is the 'real' stuff from Arthur's first brewery.

Strange thing with Guiness is that the quality is usually inversely proportional to the price - The more they charge you for it, the worse it is. Don't know why, but this rule seems true in most places.

I should clarify that a US pint is 16 oz, but nobody knows how to pour the stuff in this country and the way they slop it into a glass, carve silly shamrocks in the foam and bash it down on the bar while it is still almost all white, they put such a vicar's collar on it that you are lucky if you get 15 oz.

I only drink it in Ireland as I prefer cask-conditioned ales in England. Cans would be 89p for ordinary and over a £ for "draught" in London and crazy prices in Ireland.

Here in Tallahassee, and Imperial pint of the black stuff is typically US$4. A 4-pack of canned draught (14.5 oz per can) is typically $7.50. There are other barely distinguishable brands typically priced at only $6 per 4-pack. Accordingly, Guinness is beginning to lose sales, though I don't know if they even notice it yet. Guinness drinkers, I think, tend to have a strong brand loyality, but, it does have its limits.

In pubs anything from £1.75 - in the 'local' Weymouth bars, to £2.40 - £2.60 in those on Portland. It is possible to get 6x400ml cans for £6.0. Happy New Year

My local pub sells a can for AUD$6, though why anyone would want to drink a can of burnt Golden Syrup (is that treacle?), I don't know!

Yes lager has more alcohol but guinness has more trace elements and turns shit black like nothing else can!
I also enjoy watching the cascade of bubbles in guinness and have developed a pint glass stand that lifts the glass off the bar to put it at eye level so this can be properly enjoyed.

We have a Folk session once a month at The Monty Club in Eltham SE London. Guiness is £1.70 a pint That's an imperial pint (20 fluid ounces as opposed to a US pint which I believe is only 16 fluid ounces! - however in most of the local pubs it is about £2.40 a pint.

Personally I prefer to drink lager though.

Being that it seems always to me to be too much....
