I met Betty once, she visited the record department of the Block & Kuhl department store in Peoria, Illinois, where I worked after school and on Saturdays.

She was plugging her latest record, which MIGHT have been the LBM, I'm not sure. I remember that she was with Charlie Grean, who had written her biggest hit, "I Dreamed", and whom she introduced as her fiance. They later married and, I believe, still later divorced.

Yes, she did sound a little, maybe even a lot, like Doris Day.

This is from Dave Nathan's review of Betty Johnson's 2000 issue of Betty's Hits, Vol. 1. Copied from emusic which has several recordings by Ms Johnson.

"After a 33-year hiatus, song stylist Betty Johnson continues to celebrate her return with this album compiling her most popular recordings of the 1950s. It was during that period that she became popular not only through her recordings, but also as a regular on the high-profile Don McNeil's Breakfast Club radio program broadcasted daily out of Chicago and the original version of The Tonight Show. Featuring her clear, sparkling voice, this collection highlights Johnson's amazing versatility as she takes on a wide variety of styles. There's Eddy Arnold's enduring "I'll Hold You in My Heart," which was recorded by everyone from the composer to Eddie Fisher. Sounding like Doris Day when Doris was wearing her "sweet young thing from next door" persona, Johnson is appropriately coy on such songs as "I Dreamed" and "Beginner's Luck." Fred Ebb, of course, went on to further songwriting success with John Kander: "Cabaret," "Chicago" and other noted musicals. According to one source on the Internet (unverified) Fred Ebb himself provided the voice of the Little Blue Man on the Betty Johnson recording, which peaked at #17 on the billboard charts in 1957.

Allmusic.com says THE LITTLE BLUE MAN was written by Fred Ebb and Paul Klein. Betty Johnson had a hit with it in 1958. I don't see any evidence that Doris Day recorded it, but Betty Johnson's voice does sound a bit like Doris Day's.

I remember the song very well, and I feel sure it was the Doris Day recording that I used to hear.   
one variation though in the version I used to hear was that when she pushed the LBM over the side in the fourth verse, it didnt go through the whole chorus.
instead the LBM would simply sing out   I wuuuuuuuuuuuuuuv you. as he fell.

Carole Stober and her family recorded it on their "Rebekah" album. Rebekah was very young when she sang it and is all grown up now. They are still based in Talladega, AL, I think.

You can find the song on the Dr. Demento 20th Anniversary collection. It's not my personal taste so I usually jump it. The last time I let it play through I was taking someone to correctional custody. Three hours of songs like "Little Blue Man" and he was ready to go peacefully, as long as we didn't play the CD again!

Any chance of the tune? The song made a great impression on me in my younger days - I seem to remember it being sung by Petula Clarke, although I could be mistaken. There was a film/video with the song with a cute animated "little blue man" (although the tv was black & white). For the life of me, I cannot remember the tune, and would be very grateful if anyone can provide an ABC notation of it.

I have searched my whole life for the lyrics to this song and thanks to you I have found them. When I was three I had a old fisherman's girlfriend as a babysitter and her angelic voice would persuade me to drift off everytime. She was taken away from my family when I was young but this song started my interest in music. Thanks to you she will always be with me and passed on to my children. ~ MDK

I think the original was by Betty Johnson of the Johnson Family Singers. As I remember it, there were a lot of people who felt she should not be doing a secular song, much like those who disagreed with some of Amy Grant's later choices of material.

The original recording was, I believe, by Doris Day sometime in the late 50's or early 60's. It was sort of a follow-up to "Doggie in the Window". I don't remember it being associated with any of her movies, though.

Just found more information: The song was written in 1958 by Fred Ebb (sp.) who also wrote "Caberet". The Orchestra was led by Charles Greene, who also wrote "The Thing" and the singer was Charles' wife, Betty Johnson.

Ok, so it's not folk, but if I could please crave the indulgence of seeking lyrics from the 50's. The chorus goes something like "I wuv you, I wuv you to death". I think he was a Martian of some persuasion. The singer got sick of the wuv you bit and hurled him off a roof top. Is this the same song as "The Martian Hop"? Hope that this is not too obscure for our readership.
