JEG GIK MIG UD EN SOMMERDAG
Text: N.F.S. Grundtvig, 1847

Flyv, Guldtop, flyv rundt i bøgelunden.

TRANSLATION: Will come later.

TUNE: Can be found as midi from both of the below listed WWW sources, and on the latter of the two you can see the accords by pressing on button at the top of the page called 'Akkorder' (or just clicking here, the result should be the same ;)).

NOTE: Some versions have replaced some or all of the chorus' with i de grønne sale / mellem nattergale / ..., and since I have not been able to look at Grundtvig's own writing, I've chosen to post it as I'm learning it.

POST SCRIPTUM: This is my first Lyr Add (and apparently the first Danish as well), so... please let me know if I've done anything wrong, or should do anything differently next time... for yes, there will be a next time... I've plenty of Danish trad. songs lying about.... ;)

Note: We allow only standard English Characters in thread titles and other HTML-intensive locations, because nonstandard characters tend to cause us technical and search problems. I changed the thread title, but it's OK to have special characters in message titles and in the texts of messages.
Thanks.

Thanks, Freso. I'm looking forward to seeing more, not to mention translations if any. I have in the past been advised not to use any non-ASCII characters in the Subject line, so I was shocked to see you had ø in there.

Haruo
big fan of the preterbritannic ;-)

Only two stanzas of another version are translated HERE:

Jeg gik mig ud en Sommerdag / I Went Out One Summer's Day

I went out one summer's day
to hear birdsong as might touch the heart
In the deep dales
among the nightingales
and the other birds of song

As I came out in the green grass
I met my true love
"Your eyes and your pride have enticed me
like no other before"
See what I have found
See what I have won
Best friends now and forever

To Haruo:
Well... æ, ø, and å are all part of the Danish alphabet... I can't help it! :P Uhm, and what's 'preterbritannic'? :)

To masato:
Yeah, I know of that version, but... I haven't been able to find any info on it, so... I don't know if that's a reqriting of Grundvig's, or a 'true' folksong predating his work...
By the way, Sorten Muld recorded your (masato's) version on their album 'Mark II' from 1997 :)

Freso: "Well... æ, ø, and å are all part of the Danish alphabet... I can't help it! :P Uhm, and what's 'preterbritannic'? :)"

I'm all in favor of letters like æ, ð and ý (and, since I'm an Esperanto-user, ĉerpaĵoj el hieraŭ (snippets of yesterday) etc., but Joe Offer gets on my case when I try to use them in Subject lines. He also objects to things like © or ® or ³ etc. etc. (And it's not just him; there are technical problems that motivate the complaint.)

"Preterbritannic" is a hapax legomenon, I think. At least Google doesn't record it. I just made it up yesterday. It means "beyond the British Isles", and alludes to the widespread notion that folk songs are all in English, Welsh, or one of the Gaelics. (I'm kidding; people are actually aware that there is a whole world of folksong out there, but it's only head knowledge type awareness.)

Ah, yeah... :)

And I'm not really sure what trouble æ, ø, and å could cause - they're just some other ASCII numbers! But then again, I'm all for converting to XML and UTF, where you can actually use whatever character you want, whereever you want to, except for <, >, &, ', and " due to their special meanings in XML... :P
But this is all out of topic, so I'll just let it rest now... PM me if you want to talk more about it with me :)

Okay, just finished the translation... here ye go :)

I WENT OUT ONE SUMMER'S DAY
Translation of Grundtvig's 'Jeg gik mig ud en sommerdag', by Freso (2003)

I went out one summer's day to hear
birdsong that the heart might touch
In the deep vales,
among nightingales,
and the other wee birds of song, speaking.

A little bird sat in the beechvale,
sweet it sang in the summereveningtime,
In the deep vales...

It sang so sweet of loveliest plains and fields,
where [kærminder]* grow as grass in meadows.
In the deep vales...

It sang of all that is nice to hear,
most preffered what deeply the heart can touch.
In the deep vales...

It sang as no other birds do sing,
played pleasantly with my mother's tongue.
In the deep vales...

It sang as spoken out of my own heart,
tones gave it all my delight and pain,
In the deep vales...

I then hummed as quietly into the eveningtime:
Fly, Goldie, fly round the beechvale.
In the deep vales...

Oh, fly from Øresund to Dannevirke,
sing for dance, for school and for church.
In the deep vales...

In the people's native tongue, with Denmark's tongue,
sing, as no other birds do sing.
In the deep vales...

The all with mothers dear will feel,
it is good in the Danish coun-te-ry to be.
In the deep vales...

Then all will shine, upon which the sun has shined,
as the reddened gold in the mother's tongue.
In the deep vales...

*: I think a kærminde is a kind of flower, but I'm not too sure... weren't in any of my dictionaries... :/

Aha! kærminder = blue-eyed-Marys, apparently. Doesn't fit the meter too well, but oh well... ;-)
