Subject: Lyr Req: My Dolly's Gone (???old song)
From: GUEST,Katjehatcher@yahoo.com
Date: 04 Jan 03 - 12:33 AM

My mother sings part of a song to my daughter and doesn't know the name of the song or who sang it. We are thinking that the song is pre-1950. If anyone can help, that would be great. This is what we can remember. Any information would be helpful, thank you!!!

katjehatcher@yahoo.com

A little girl with bows and curls
kept asking every lady.
My dolly's gone
Can I walk along
and rockabye your baby?
Her eyes are blue
My doll's were too.
I've cried since she's been missing.
Oh lady please
just one little squeeze
and could I maybe kiss her?

I too started looking for the Lyrics of this song. I use to sing it to my 2 daughters when they were babies. It may have been on one of my children's records when I was little. There was another one I liked also Be Your Mother's Little Helper.

Now when I find that doll of mine
I'll make a promise lady
I'll let you play with my dolly all day
If I can hold your baby

I remember hearing the song in the 1960's on a 45 rpm record. I could swear it was sung by Patti Page, but it does not show up on her website. The words I remember are as follows:

A little girl with bows and curls
kept asking every lady,
"My dolly's gone, can I walk along
And rock-a-bye your baby?

Him eyes are blue. My doll's were too.
I've cried since she's been missin.
Oh lady, please, just one little squeeze
or could I maybe kiss him?

Chorus
Him cannot walk, him can't even talk
but can I hold him lady?
Him nose is red, no hair on him head
because him is a baby.

Oh, if I find that doll of mine
I'll make a promise, lady.
I'll let you play with my dolly all day
If I can hold your baby (sing chorus)

Subject: Lyr Add: BECAUSE HIM IS A BABY

We couldn't find it because we didn't have the correct title, that's why! The title is BECAUSE HIM IS A BABY. It was sung by Patti Page and released as the B side of Mercury 71510: GOODBYE CHARLIE, in September, 1959, according to Billboard magazine. Here's my transcription of another version I heard on Spotify:

BECAUSE HIM IS A BABY
Words and music: Bob Merrill
As sung by Teresa Brewer on "Christmas Favorites," 2011.

CHILD #1, SPOKEN: O Mommy, will you read us a story?
CHILD #2, SPOKEN: from the new book we got for Christmas
CHILD #1, SPOKEN: 'cause we can't read yet.
SINGER, SPOKEN: All right, children; how about this one? The story of a little girl who lost her dolly.

1. A little girl with bows and curls
Kept asking ev'ry lady:
"My dolly's gone; can I walk along
And rock-a-bye your baby?"

CHORUS: Him cannot walk; him can't even talk,
But can I hold him, lady?
Him nose is red; no hair on him head,
Because him is a baby.

2. Him eyes are blue; my doll's were too.
I cry since she's been missin'.
O lady, please, just one little squeeze,
Or could I maybe kiss 'im? CHORUS

Teresa Brewer also sang it on a Christmas Album, (Teresa Brewer Christmas Favorites) released in 1960, the song is titled "Because him is a Baby".

This is how I remember singing this song so many years ago. My neighbor had a piano and she used to play it for me, while I sang along. Beautifyl melody.
