Subject: Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer - DUH!!! From: wilco Date: 04 Jan 03 - 11:15 AM Limbaugh is an entertainer, witha political venue. People who take him seriously are about as bright as those who take Barbara Striesand's pontifications seriously. He is laughing all the way to the bank!!!! Messages from multiple threads combined. |
Subject: RE: Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer - DUH!!! From: GUEST Date: 04 Jan 03 - 11:20 AM I think you are stretching the definition of entertaining. Clod bore would be a more accurate description. |
Subject: RE: Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer - DUH!!! From: curmudgeon Date: 04 Jan 03 - 11:25 AM Shouldn't that be "political venom?" |
Subject: RE: Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer - DUH!!! From: Peter T. Date: 04 Jan 03 - 11:42 AM Given that entertainment in America (as in any society) is deeply political, if only by what it distracts us from, not to add, among other things the purveying of a world view, a set of models of human interaction, and a consumerist goal, you should watch where you throw your "Duhs". yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer - DUH!!! From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 04 Jan 03 - 12:07 PM There is a big audience out there for offensiveness, boorishness, obscenity, and arrogance. Howard Stern if the king of the "Shock Jocks" and has spawned a whole, foul-mouthed, bathroom humor talk show hosts now. Judge Judy is obnxious, but as long as she is being obnoxious to someone else, some people find her entertaining. Jerry Springer makes stupidity and pain entertaining to some. In Rome, they threw people to th lions. Now, the lions have talk shows and tv programs. And many people love it. I'll pass, thank you... and the only thing I find offensive about Rush Limbaugh is his audience. Jerry |
Subject: RE: Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer - DUH!!! From: Amos Date: 04 Jan 03 - 12:26 PM among other things the purveying of a world view, a set of models of human interaction, and a consumerist goal Of these, the second is perhaps the most destructive weapon of mass conversion ever invented. Peter has, as usual, sliced keenly to t he heart of things with his offhand remark. (If you always look at things 'on the other hand', all your remarks are off-handed, I suppose). A |

Subject: RE: Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer - DUH!!! From: kendall Date: 04 Jan 03 - 12:44 PM Even his brother says he is an embarassment to the family, and he should shut up. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer - DUH!!! From: GUEST Date: 04 Jan 03 - 05:37 PM Oh please, people. Levity, levity, levity. If you walk through life thinking everything is a sinister plot to rob the world's children of their lifesaving medicine and the international geriatric community of their food then you must be pretty miserable. Have you ever actually LISTENED to the Rush Limbaugh show? It's all about the humour. Whether or not you agree with the man you have to appreciate his stunning wit. Al Franken made a cheap buck off of his then ample coattails. BTW, when Franken sat in on the Stephanopoulous round table I thought he was woefully unprepared. He looked out of his league. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer - DUH!!! From: mack/misophist Date: 04 Jan 03 - 05:43 PM The greatest piece of political venom in all history came from the early 1800's. "This being, so brilliant yet so corrupt, like a mackerel, rotting and stinking and glowing in the moonlight." What happened to politicians like that? Where did we go wrong? |
Subject: RE: BS: Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer - DUH!!! From: GUEST Date: 04 Jan 03 - 05:46 PM Who's brother? Franken's? I agree wholeheartedly. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer - DUH!!! From: GUEST,Fred Miller Date: 04 Jan 03 - 06:36 PM It's pretty easy to appear to be witty by cococting misinformation to set up your punchlines. The funniest things, to me, are true. I'm sure Franken was out of his depth, if you say so, but Limbaugh will not even try to hold his own with anyone, he must control the whole court. I feel confident even an average guy like me would kill him in a head to head. So what. I'd rather read an essayist who'd done some real homework. There has always been a radio guy in Limbaugh's vein, even before there was radio, I'm pretty sure. Like pidgeons, when one goes, another takes the spot. I've seen and heard him and don't see the great wit--found it boring and depressing, but not entirely without a sad fascination. Franken does alright, sometimes, but has a juvenile streak that doesn't always work for me. The best political humour doesn't have an agenda, crackpot or otherwise. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer - DUH!!! From: Troll Date: 04 Jan 03 - 08:26 PM Few entertainers are universally loved and Rush is certainly not one of them. There are those who do find his take on American politics amusing. Of course he must control the whole court. That's the kind of show it is. No one would listen to a show where the host got roundly trounced day after day. In fact, Rush claims that this is the reason that the liberals don't have any national talk shows; it's too easy to counter their arguments. Now please don't come back at ME for the preceeding statement; that's what he has repeatedly said on his show. troll |

Subject: RE: BS: Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer - DUH!!! From: Donuel Date: 04 Jan 03 - 09:13 PM The real reason that radio is right wing is that media mergers have condensed radio stations to now just a few multi billionaire corporate whores. Virtually all the mergers that can happen have now happened in industry, oil and of course every branch of the media. These monopolies do not benefit the average man. The main job of the media now is getting the average man to support the corporate and government crimes committed against him. The right wing radio dupes are led by one issue at a time under the banner of God and country. They are told they are the elite. The right is mobilized by one issue politics like guns or abortion. They are told they are morally higher than everyone else, they are told they will get a tax break and they fall for it every time. With the mandate of a court determined election the talk radio right like Mike Savage strut about stammering that their majority rules, their morality is sacrosanct and only their patriotism counts - others may simply be traitors or at least suspect. The right really is more than the sum of its duped parts. It is for God and country in the name of nameless corporations. Even Pacifica radio is bought out. PBS as a corporation seems to be my only refuge with programs like frontline. Just imagine a government and media by the people for the people and not just right wing agenda corporations. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer - DUH!!! From: GUEST,Fred Miller Date: 04 Jan 03 - 09:39 PM Yes, troll, but it's perfectly silly for him to say that, given his format. Liberals could simply do what he does, if they cared to, but since they have these national shows called The News, who needs it? Liberals control the media, I've heard. I guess that's why they pick guys like Limbaugh, as conservative court jesters in their kingdom, to traffic in bits that sound okay if you don't think too much about them. I keep looking for the really good conservative voices in print, and have a hard time finding them. There are good things here and there, but nothing like the depth and breadth of liberal-leaning essays and articles. I'm not saying there's a good reason for it, I regret it. I'd rather read the serious stuff than watch some clown. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer - DUH!!! From: catspaw49 Date: 04 Jan 03 - 09:42 PM I think his song and dance routines need a lot of work. I saw his rendition of "Dancing in the Dark" and his voice broke three times, he was off-key almost continually, and the only good part came when he tripped over one of his own books that had dropped from his desk and his pants fell down. At that point the whole world could see how inadequately equipped he really is. Spaw |
