Well, it looks like I'm not going to be able to get to Singtime Frolics this year. But my daughter, who lives near Santa Barbara, has school vacation from Feb 15-23, so if anyone knows of any similar singing or folk music type gatherings or festivals in the Southern California area during that time, I'd love to know about it. She just sang me two Malvina Reynolds songs over the phone...and she's only 8!

Aloha,
Mark

Aw, phooey, Mark! I'll miss ya by about a week ( and 100 + miles).

San Diego has a song circle on the 2nd Saturday, which will be the 15th of February, at St. Andrews Lutheran Church in La Mesa. I can post more info if you think you might get down that way.

Hugh (aka The Banjoest) and Amos (aka Amos) are among the folks who jam in Balboa Park, and I don't know which day(s) they are open to doing that in February. If they do it on Feb. 28, I can join them. But their schedule may fit yours better.

Are you open to travelling as far south as San Diego?

Genie

I was hoping to stay around the L.A. area: Santa Barbara would be OK, since they live in Ojai, and I'd be willing to go down to Orange County, but my daughter is not excited about long car trips taking up lots of dad's visit--I'll save that for the East Coast trip I'm hoping to make this summer. I guess I'll see if I can scare up a website or two. Oughta be something around that area.

Awww, Mark -- come on down.

But I am sure thee is some kind of good music in Santa Barbara, just down the hill from Ojai, or in Ventura -- I just don't know anyone in the area. :emme see what I can scrounge up....

The folkies probably center around this place:

Folk Mote Music
1034 Santa Barbara Street
Santa Barbara, CA 93101
(805) 962-0830 voice
(805) 962-2841 fax

and here's a blurb on what looks like a really good open mic event every week:

Every Thursday Evening 8:00 PM. Some of the most talented Singer/Songwriters in the state come to perform in this weekly venue that includes music from all disciplines. From the Delta Blues of Spyder Murphy to Zydeco and Contemporary Folk music gifted artists play guitars, piano, drums, trombones, harmonica  and washboards to a festive audience. With single performers to jazz bands this unique revue specializes in original compositions that are sure to inspire the creative juices in all of us. Join us for an evening of music that you won't soon forget and that you can't hear  anywhere else in the world! Bring your guitar and join in on the fun and sing us a song at the Open-mic following the Showcase.  Where: Dargans Irish Pub 18 east Ortega St. Santa Barbara,CA Just off State Street in downtown Santa Barbara For further information contact: Antara Blasius/RedStar Productions (805) 563-2508 e-mail antara@silcom.com

Mark...Santa Barbara's alternate newspaper is the S.B. Independent, and the NPR station is KCBX. Both might be able to give you a good start on things musical during your time there. Santa Barbara is a great little city for hanging out, and has very fine music (and good food, including a wonderful Farmer's Market).

If you could be tempted up to San Luis Obispo County, I'm sure I could get some people together who would love to have you join in, and on the 25th there will be a concert of Madagascar music put on by SLOFolks. Y'all come!!
