just like the old days anywhere!

I was just looking at the cards on the wall there....wondering where all the people are and what they are doing a wnderful thing.
I am now going to work on my Mr. Dick Web page.....the winter and the issolation of it all have forced me to climb into my work....David Coperfield you know.... more later no doubt.

I have been heating with wood for 16 years now!
When you heat with wood you get warm four times.
One time stacking
One time bringing it in
third time---burning it
fourth time-clearing out ashes

The wood stove always has a tea pot on it and that is wonderful too as hot water is always ready for tea.

Time for a cup now...

Do you heat with wood? If so, good. It's quite healthful, and it gives one something to do several times a day too.

Thanks LH....
We live in an age where capitolism is waving the folk dog most of the time. Christmas cards are a way to brighten up the place whilst communicating....the ones you dont like you can always burn in the woodstove for heat....
Must go fetch some more wood...

The cards, the cards, its all in the cards....
the spirit of many things all wrapped up for some warped up for others.
But it is like music....if played only for money and not from the heart it falls like an unwanted card into the recycling bin unread.

Same too for the wanton discarding of custom. No matter how recent-a well praciced custom given up by lazyness alone. The same goes for music....well too hard to do it right.....I am to lazy to just come out and play in a corner of a pub without electronic amplication free beer and money...

The cards that no one wants are the musicians who do not bring a sincere message to festivals. They play for their money then hide from the people behind fences and depart like an unsigned card from the scene as swiftly as can be arranged.

Customs are things that defy convenience. They do so to bring rewards of the mind and of the heart that turn time and effort into treasure.
This is true of all good folk things. It is worth breaking with the convention to extend the cultural warmth to one and all.

Conrad

Spaw, I do hope that you will send Conrad a card soon, for Groundhog Day or some other appropriate occasion, and include an apologetic handwritten note asking for your insensitivity to be pardoned or overlooked.

(chuckle) I love this thread. It's inane, dimwitted, almost without any discernable meaning, and it WILL not die!

Cards? A commercialised pain in the colon. The ones that really piss me off are the corporate ones - I recall interminable hours spent signing reams of cards to people I lcouldn't care two hoots about, and every time I receive one I'm underwhelmed by the gesture.
Best card I got this year was from Charlie, the local Big Issue seller in Beaconsfield. That and a couple of home-made jobs were the only ones that actually lifted me and made me think warmly of the senders.
As for the rest - a shocking waste of card, ink, saliva and postman's bunions!
Of course, as an insidious Roman Catholic consipracy, the plan to overwhelm the postal service with meaningless mail must be fought... (Bloody hell - I've just turned into a troll. Nurse! The screens!!)

Conrad, I'd suggest taking the opportunity to focus your thoughts more than once a year. They're getting a bit scattered and we're all getting caught in the overspray.

Merry Christmas.

E mail is good for some things but I consider it a basic form of communication one small step behind conversation.
Just as one would thank a person for example in conversation and also send a card of thanks I would immagine in the same way one can send an e.mail but to really express yourself formally a card with personal hand written note is the way I like to be thanked. More from the heart and hand.

One way of thinking of the cards is that they help support artists. I do my own and enjoy the opportunity once a year to focus my thoughts through creativity. These days there are some very good cards out there done artistically. Check local artist studios.

I am thinking of combining music with the card next year including a cd of whistle and perhaps storytelling.

Have been sending e-cards through Corbis for several years with no problem at all. Mostly they offer that service to promote the sale of their prints, which are numerous, and quite lovely. They don't send an attachment, but a link to your card, so it doesn't muck up any servers. The photos are high-quality, not that silly animated stuff that other sites offer.

I prefer sending paper cards, but sometimes you need the sentiment to get there faster.

Some folks like to talk on the phone, and that's okay too. Personally I detest it, as do a couple of my friends, so I write instead. Just a different way of communicating. I think it is all right to send cards or not, however you see fit. :-)

You can do anything you want!

I merely suggest!

Cards have so many functions. They can indeed be recycled!
I like the art.....

send them or dont send them....
but consider...the wonder of it.

No, Conrad the only "brainless & moronic" person with "idjiot problems" "still not making any sense" is YOU! Christmas cards are not part of my tradition. Why the hell should I start making them part of it just because you tell me to? Who is it that's started a thread ordering other people to do as *he* wants, handing out gratuitous abuse & recommending posting horse shit to non-compliers?

The Canadian Post Office won't mail dogshit either. Go figure. How do they expect us to clean up the country? If they did allow the mailing of dogshit, the oval office would presently be neck-deep in the stuff, I can assure you.

Herr Liebenscheiss - brilliant analysis...but, remember this: You can lead a horse's ass to water, but you can't make him drink!

Conrad, I must agree. e-cards are silly. I delete them with extreme prejudice.

I'd like to see NatLamps version of the proud suburban family's yearly boasting and summation-type photo card: Dad is in jail for tax fraud, Mom has run off with Dad's partner, Janie is pregnant and has dropped out of junior high school, Kyle just failed all his midterms and is joining the Satanic Church, and Billie has grown dreadlocks and is shaving all the family pets bald. (Nice photo shows house in utter chaos, with Janie, Kyle, and Billie making rude gestures at the camera, Billie holding shaved cat under one arm and giving finger, Kyle holding reversed cross, Janie smiling to show full set of braces...

But I do beware of e-cards. I don't send them and don't like getting them. I am suspicious of what those sites are doing with the e-mail addresses provided them.

ordinary cards much better than e.cards.
too many ecards and servers get all bogged down because ecards are so huge.....that is the attachment variety.....

if you do an e.card use one of the sites that keeps it there and does not send the huge image.

Teehee! Glad you liked it, khandu. :-)

As for Christmas cards... here's my gripe about the storebought kind. They say the STUPIDEST things! Things like "May the old-fashioned joys of Christmas be yours."

Oh please. When was the last time you actually SAID that to someone? That's probably why Kris finds them impersonal. I certainly think a stupid cookie-cutter verse is impersonal, likewise the cards you get that have the sender's name preprinted on them.

I prefer plain ol' Merry Christmas, or blank cards when I can find them. When I have time, I make my own. No two are ever alike, and I tailor them to each recipient. One year I did some gold-leaf calligraphy for a special friend. Can't buy that in no Hallmark shop.

I got an e-mail from an overseas friend the other day. We have known each other about 14 years, since I visited England, and have written back and forth over the years. I didn't know if her snail mail was current, so I sent her an e-card instead. (I am a big fan of the e-card, by the way. They are a lot of fun!) She said, "I bought cards early in December to be ahead of the game, and they are still sitting in the box. But I was thinking about you all, and hope you had a nice Christmas."

So, see, just because you don't get a card from someone, doesn't mean they don't care. :-)

Now, Conrad...it takes talent to be both brainless and moronic. Doesn't it? Have compassion. I think you and Spaw both need to sit down with Herr Doktor Liebenscheiss and have a good long talk, get it all out, and set things right between the two of you. I agree that it was a low blow when he insulted your car (which, God knows, is almost as attractive as a pink Edsel...), but he's been under stress. He secretly wants desperately to visit the WSSBA, but has been banned for lifetime from the campus. Can you imagine how he must feel?

Now, the Christmas card thing. Do you know that the Canadian Post Office refuses to mail cards that are larger than 6 x 9'? It is simply because of this that I have not sent anyone a Christmas Card in the last 25 years or so. It's not my fault that the Postal authorities in this country lack vision.

Ok....don't worry you have almost a whole year to overcome your idjiot problems with christmas cards. You can practice folding paper, addressing and putting the stamp on.....

The anti-card folk have still not made any sense.....the spaw folk are simply brainless as well as moronic....

Always accessible and listed. All are welcome always. Stop in!

Yes! I have several Jewish friends who send christmas cards! Did I ever tell you that I grew up in Golders Green- nw11 London? Yup!
We had the only santa claus on the door in the neighborhood and only christmas tree....

Interesting to see so many on a traditional music place in the anti position. Actually I have found that many folk music people are actually not very traditional at all. They simply use the word to get into other people's pockets!

Yeah Mark, you're right.....and it was probably a bad call as well. But sometimes the stars and planets line up and the gods smile on the double digit underdog! When they have shut down a great runner and negated the speed of a fast team by matching the speed of a great offense and defense, when a Heisman candidate QB eats more turf in a single game than he has in a year and a team with better players is taken to the wall by a true "team" with better teamwork and spirit, that has always somehow, found a way to win........well then sometimes the gods of football smile and say, "Let them have this small thing for they've earned it."

(The call should have been for the earlier Hold instead of Pass Interference anyway)

I didn't get Christmas cards from either Conrad Bladey OR George Bush Jr!!!! Man, am I feeling left out! ARRGH!

But I have a suggestion of my own: Why not this year EVERYBODY (you know, the people Conrad sends Christmas cards to?)...yes, absolutely E-V-E-R-Y-BODY send a Christmas gift of *one penny* to the Nigerian scam artist of your choice...hell, to all of 'em...

Nigerian scam artists need love too. Think of how lonely it gets sitting in some seedy apartment in Lagos, churning out thousands and thousands of emails to people who are too hardhearted to even respond to a generous offer to share $30 million dollars for a few simple formalities. Think of the pain of countless rejections! Think of the despair and bereftitude in Nigeria!

So I say, show some interest in what they have to offer, ask how you can help, what you can do, whom you should contact...get all the info...and then send 'em a penny (a nice, bright, shiny one) along with an autographed picture of William Shatner jumping rope in the nude, with Conrad holding one end of the rope and Dubya holding the other. (Okay, Spaw? How's that?)

It's time we brought a little Christmas spirit to Nigeria. You can make it retroactive to 2002 or just wait till next year, assuming Dubya has not invaded Nigeria by then in search of "terrorists" or weapons of mass destruction...

I have been making my own Christmas cards since the 60's. A girlfriend's mother used to find this somehow infra-dig or cheap as she put it. The stupidity was when she showed me the box she bought and only 6 pence a card. I didn't even bother to point out that my individually crafted had not only the personanl touch but the thought was not the price and I thought about the recipient as I made each one. Such concepts were lost on her generation who HAD make things out of poverty. 'sides which how could I explain that they wer more expensive - I was profligate and cheap at the same time. The girlfriend is of course an ex (long since).
Now that I do them on a PC they are cheaper but more professional, & I do feel I have lost something. The jokes are worse too!

Is there any way that the Create a Thread page can be adjusted so that it won't allow Conrad to scream at us with his self-important thread titles?

Just a thought.

Send me a card and I'll return it next year - please provide a self addressed self stamped envelope or I'll throw the dang thing out. Probably steal the stamp and throw it out anyway!

Har har -
