Subject: Lyr Add: NU BELLO CARDILLO
From: sharyn
Date: 06 Jan 03 - 01:45 PM

Here they are:

NU BELLO CARDILLO

Sto crescenno nu bello cardillo
quanta cosa che l'aggiu impara
a da ire da chisto e da chillo
l'immasciata pe me a da porta

Siente ca, bello mio, lo commanne
C'e na casa, na nena nce sta
tu la vide che nun e distante
che la nena a gi a truva.

Si la truovi che face durmenno
pe na fata nun l'ha da pija
nu rumore nun fa co le penne
ue, cardi, l'avessi a sceta

Si affaciata po sta a lu barcone (balcone?)
pe na rosa l'avessi a pija
ue cardi, vide la nenna
va facenno, cardi, addura.

Se la trovi che face l'ammore
stu curtiello nasconnete a ca
o cuncilla dritto a lu core
e lo sanghe tu m'hai da porta

Ma si piensa co te piano piano
Zitto zitto tu l'ha da azzecca
se a pero te vo co la mano
presto in petto tu l'hai da zumpa

Mara, these words were printed on the jacket of a version of Joan Baez in Concert that was released in Japan. I can't put in the accent marks for you and I am suspicious of the "r" in "barcone" -- I think the word is "balcone" (listen to it on your recording). But this should get you started.

Molto grazie, Sharyn!

The words seem to be in a dialect that differs a bit from the Italian I learned in Firenze. ("Core" instead of "cuore," "ammore" instead of "amore," and "nu" instead of (I assume) "un'" or "uno.") Also that "nce" is a typo, isn't it?

Which words are supposed to have accent marks? (IIRC, Italian does not use many of them. I can usually type Italian lyrics on my keyboard without having to use them.) If you could indicate the word(s) and the name of the accent mark(s) -- e.g., acute accent, grave accent, I can add them using Word.

Grazie ancora,

Gini

Hey Genie, I'm off to work in a minute -- I'll have to give you the accent information later. But it is my understanding that this song is in Portuguese, not Italian (I don't speak either, I speak Spanish and a few words of Irish, studied Latin).

Everything I found said "Bello" not "Bella" but I didn't find any lyrics at all.

O.K, here I am, back again. The first six stanzas of Masato's first version are a lot like the Joan Baez version I gave you and, Genie, you can take the accent marks from his text. No, I don't think "nce" is a typo -- Masato gives "'nce" for it. The only typo I made above is "affaciata": it should be "affacciata." And Sorcha, you are correct, it is "bello," not "bella."

Any further questions about this text that I can help you with?

I see from Masato's link that it is Neapolitan (like "O Sole Mio" and a number of other popular "Italian" favorites). That would explain the variant dialect/spelling.

Yes, it is a Neapolitan song. The "cardillo" is a little bird, a goldfinch. The singer asks the little bird to be his messenger, and to fly to the woman he loves. If the little bird finds his beloved asleep, he must not make any noise with his wings not to awake her, but if he finds her making love with someone else, he must stab her to death with a knife the singer says he'll give him. But what the singer really wants the little bird to do, is to tell this woman that his master can't sleep any more because of her. And if she embraces and kisses the little bird, the singer would give his life to be at the lucky little bird's place just for a moment...
