Since it's the dead of winter in most of the Northern Hemisphere, it's a good time to start thinking about summer. Specifically, about the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop, whose three one-week sessions in July and August at a camp on Washington State's Kitsap Peninsula (a ferry ride and easy drive from Seattle) are as close to acoustic music heaven as you're likely to get. At least, that's one person's biased (but not personally affiliated) opinion. It's a bit pricy but scholarships are available. Every time I've been there I've had a marvelous time AND my guitar/musical knowledge took a quantum leap. And having Gordon Bok and a few other wonderful musicians accompany me at the student concert on a song I'd recently written....that was a moment I'll never forget. Check it out! Scroll down the page to find links to previous years' brochures, with lists of faculty members and the courses they taught.

Aloha,
Mark

Mark,

I have any number of PSGW mugs and t-shirts around here from my Dad's house. I'm not sure if he attended to teach or participate as a student or just lend a hand, but he always enjoyed the time he spent there.

John was a student one year I was there...it might have been 1987. Here's a story I think you'll appreciate. I wasn't in the class, but heard it from someone who was. The teacher (I'm not sure who, it might have been Laura Smith) was asking students to listen to the ambient sounds in the forest around Lake Flora, and describe what they heard. One mentioned the wind in the fir branches, one the chords from a distant guitar. When she asked the redoubtable Mr. Dwyer what he heard, he looked at her and, in his best no-nonsense librarian manner, snapped, "Background noise." Despite that, I know he enjoyed the camp, and his knowledge and his enthusiasm for playing and singing were very evident.

Aloha,
Mark

I'm thinking about attending this year's Puget Sound Guitar Workshop. I would take Week 2, which is in August and is an intermediate level week-long session. (Week 1 is a beginner's level; Week 4 is up to and including professional level)

I thought first about attending the Fiddle Tunes Festival in Port Townsend - in July - but Puget Sound lays much more emphasis on guitar, plus there is a lot of singing. I have friends who have gone to both of them.

I know Mark is now living in California so he probably won't be going - Hey, Mark! Where are you? - but I'm wondering if anyone else on the Cat ever attends? Stilly, I know you said your father used to go - have you ever gone?

No, I don't play guitar. But it always sounded like a great program.

I was just going add that I loved those earlier weeklong workshops. I taught at several of them when they were held just North of Everett. That was back in the days of Dave and Flip Auer, Julie Sakahara, etc. Great times. Summer is now my busiest building season, so I doubt I'll be going this year. CHEERS, Bob

WooHoo!!! I just had the best week ever at PSGW! (Flip and Julie were both there.) I've been going to week one for about seven years now (Wayne Henderson's week). It was really packed this time!! They had to turn away campers who had not reserved a spot early enough. There are a lot of music camps around the country, but I go to this one because I live in Washington state. It's a gas!

I have quite a few vintage Guitar Workshop t-shirts and mugs of my Dad's from over the years. Think there'd be any interest at the Mudcat Auction for vintage items? (He was before your time there, Margo.)

Got any pics of your vintage items? Would your dad object to letting them go? I don't know what kind of interest there might be. They have some pretty nice things now.

I didn't really mean for you to respond to that, it was a rhetorical question for the old timers who are from the PNW who were his friends. Dad died over 10 years ago.

The Mudcat numbers are off. It says 7 messages when in fact there are 15.
