Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Seine (Irving Burgess/Kingston Trio) From: GUEST Date: 28 Jun 12 - 12:29 AM First verse The Seine when she starts on her travels lazily flows from her source Slowly her length she unravels, twisting and turning her course Deep in the country she tarries, not knowing which way to go Til the inchantment of Paris beckons her swiftly to flow Second verse (partly) Reaching hwer Paris she liingers, lazily keeping her tryst Twining each bridge with her fingers, staying a while to be kissed Hope this helps |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Seine (Irving Burgess/Kingston Trio) From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 19 Jun 11 - 06:18 AM If I'm not entirely mistaken, guest simon wants to signal to us that the line "Can you count the times that we heard the chimes of Notre Dame" is actually from a different song, "Nannas Song" by Ralph McTell. Well, not completely different. Clichés about cities or countries are the dayly bread of authors who have nothing new to say. Misspelled name-dropping (see Saint-Germain-des-Prés) adds to this impression, and to the suspicion that Lord Burgess's calypsos are not all that authentic either. |

Subject: RE: Song About the River Seine (Burgess) From: Joe Offer Date: 12 May 07 - 02:16 AM Hi, Yvonne - as far as I know, the lyrics posted above ARE the complete ones for Irving Burgie's "The Seine." Is that the one you were seeking? -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Song About the River Seine (Burgess) From: GUEST,yvonne Date: 11 May 07 - 09:35 PM I'm trying to locate lyrics for the entire song....no luck so far in searching. do you have more info? |
Subject: RE: Song About the River Seine From: dick greenhaus Date: 07 Jul 98 - 09:32 PM Joe- I think that they're all the same person. "Writing" some of those songs, of course, was an exercise in selective (shall I say) borrowing: Day-O and Yellow Bird were adaptations of trad. material; I'm not sure about the others. |
Subject: RE: Song About the River Seine From: Joe Offer Date: 07 Jul 98 - 07:35 PM Say, Dick - I did kinda wonder, and then I dismissed the idea, but now you bring it up - is Irving Burgess of "The Seine" and "El Matador" and other Kingston Trio songs the same as Irving Burgie, who wrote "Jamaica Farewell," "Day-O," "Island in the Sun," and "Yellow Bird"???? My Burgie album says that Burgie performed under the name "Lord Burgess" and wrote 35 songs that were recorded by Harry Belafonte. Burgie studied at Juilliard, University of Arizona, and the University of Southern California. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Song About the River Seine From: Peter Dawson Date: 07 Jul 98 - 03:10 PM I have a recording by (I think) Ralph McTell, of a song which starts If I take you dancing Down the street to watch you laughing And stand still in the midnight rain Just to watch you smile again Understand I'll hold your hand A little tight As if to stop that special night from turning into morning time too soon. It contains a line Can you count the times That we heard the chimes of Notre Dame across the Seine To remind us sadly onece again Time, just like a river Swiflty flies away Understand I'll hold your hand . . . [etc] Does that help?

Subject: RE: Song About the River Seine From: Barbara Date: 07 Jul 98 - 12:55 AM Oh, yeah! THAT'S the rest of the last verse, and THAT'S what they were saying in French, St.Germain le Pre! Thanks Joe, and it's only plagerism if I wrote it in the first place. Typing doesn't count. And, as I recall, one group (the Kingston Trio, obviously, from Joe's post) sang "mmmm" to lead into the chorus, and the other sang "oo-oo". Besides, I just copied your copy to my files so I'LL have the right words next time. Blessings, Barbara PS Joe, you home yet? or still in some library in Texas? |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE SEINE (Irving Burgess) From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Jul 98 - 11:50 PM Oh, good....Barbara did most of the typing. I'll just copy her typing and insert the corrections from my Kingston trio songbook. Hope you don't mind the plagiarism, Barbara. The Seine by Irving Burgess. copyright, 1959, by Flywheel Music, Inc. One night along the river At St. Germain le Pre, I first met my beloved At a small sidewalk cafe We walked along the river, Shadows passing by, But we only saw each other, The shining water and the sky. Chorus: Mm, The Seine, the Seine,
Standing there across the river,

Subject: RE: Song About the River Seine From: Barbara Date: 06 Jul 98 - 11:36 PM No, wait...wait, That's not right. If I supply you with all the pieces I can remember, maybe you can put them in the correct order, hey?
And there across the river,
We walked along the river
So I think that Notre Dame is the second verse, the quatrain above is the end of the first verse, and I'm missing the end of the (third) last verse. Still, that ain't bad for something I learned at camp when I was 14. |
Subject: RE: Song About the River Seine From: Barbara Date: 06 Jul 98 - 11:16 PM I walked along the river Near (transliteration of 37 yr old memory) San Jeumon d'Bway I first met my beloved At a small sidewalk cafe And as I walked beside her I said a little prayer That when this dream was over I'd awake and find her there, Oo-oo, oo-oo oo-oo,
Chorus:
We walked along the river |
Subject: RE: Song About the River Seine From: Bert C. Date: 06 Jul 98 - 12:22 PM It was the Kingston Trio - I have the album. I'll try to dig the words out sometime this week. If I take too long, refresh the thread to remind me:-) Bert C. |
