Subject: RE: Folk Music in LA area 2/6-2/9 From: Mark Cohen Date: 11 Jan 03 - 05:30 PM Let me know if you find anything...I'll be there 2/14 to 2/19. Aloha, Mark Hey, I just remembered that one of my favorite online folk music shows, FolkScene, has come out of L.A. for the past 25 years. You might see if Howard and Roz Larman, the hosts, have any suggestions. And so will I. (By the way, this is unfortunately one of the increasing number of sites that works well with Internet Explorer but is a little quirky with Netscape.) |
Subject: RE: Folk Music in LA area 2/6-2/9 From: Mudlark Date: 11 Jan 03 - 07:31 PM I've been away for a long time but...is McCabe's still going? Folk-friendly music store with live entertainment. Also, if you can get ahold of it, the Calendar section of the LA Times will be a help. |
Subject: RE: Folk Music in LA area 2/6-2/9 From: Mark Cohen Date: 11 Jan 03 - 11:28 PM Wow, lots of stuff at the FolkScene Calendar Page. All January dates, though...guess I'll have to wait a bit for February. I noticed Dave Kinnoin is doing a children's concert. If he's performing in February I definitely want to take my daughter...especially because he recorded one of my songs! And yes, McCabe's in Santa Monica is obviously going strong. Shayna loved the aquarium underneath the Santa Monica Pier...so that looks like a good bet. Especially because I have an old high school friend who lives in Santa Monica--saw him last month for the first time in over 25 years! Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Folk Music in LA area 2/6-2/9 From: phinque Date: 13 Jan 03 - 04:58 PM I'll definately try Mccabes and check the Folk Scene page later in the month. I guess San Fran. would have more, but at least there are some prospects in LA. Thanks. |

Subject: RE: Folk Music in LA area 2/6-2/9 From: Mark Cohen Date: 18 Jan 03 - 01:06 AM Mary Katherine, thanks! Looks like Steve Gillette/Cindy Mangsen in Anaheim on Saturday is a distinct possibility. Friday contradance in Bellflower is tempting, but I'll be taking a redeye Thursday night from Honolulu and getting into LAX early Friday morning, then going up to Ojai to pick up my daughter, so I think I'll be turning in early that night! Looks like the FolkScene calendar changes on the 20th, so I'll check back for February. Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: Folk Music in LA area 2/6-2/9 From: Mark Cohen Date: 18 Jan 03 - 04:23 AM Walkin' On My Wheels...it's also been recorded by Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer. That is, it's on their CD "Nobody Else Like Me", backed by Cathy and Marcy and their musicians, but the lead is sung by a child--and very well, too! Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Folk Music in LA area 2/6-2/9 From: GUEST,Frank Hamilton Date: 18 Jan 03 - 12:50 PM Hi, I lived in L.A. for over twenty years. I knew Jerry McCabe who eventually became the Guitar Shop. Odetta, Derroll Adams, Jo Mapes lived in LA. Yes, there was very active scene in folk music for many years. Will Geer, Woody Guthrie and Bess Lomax Hawes lived in a mountainous suburb called Topanga Canyon. Under all that tinsel well, it's not all real tinsel. If you get a chance, go talk to my old buddy Dave Zeitlin at McCabe's Guitar Shop who has been teaching there for many years. He is very knowlegeable about folk music in general and the LA scene in particular. He used to do a lot of performing and was wonderful. Frank |
Subject: RE: Folk Music in LA area 2/6-2/9 From: Bev and Jerry Date: 19 Jan 03 - 12:59 AM Mark: We believe that the first time Dave Kinnoin heard "Walkin' on My Wheels" was when we sang it at a Children's Music Network meeting around 1492 (give or take a few years). Bev and Jerry |
