Subject: Obit: Bee Gees-And then there were two From: Little Robyn Date: 12 Jan 03 - 05:20 AM They've just announced on our news that Maurice Gibb has died. Although not a folkie, he and his brothers have been making music for over 40 years! A sad loss to the music world. Robyn |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bee Gees-And then there were two From: Dave the Gnome Date: 12 Jan 03 - 06:45 AM I remember the Bee Gees more for their early work. Stuff Like New York mining disaster 19(whatever) and The first of May. Very original stuff and a far cry from the commerciality of the 70's. What I have heard of Robins new solo album sound very promising as well. It is tragic that Maurice has died before his time though. It means that the Brothers Gibb are indeed sadly depleted. I hope they recover from their loss and that his family find the strength to carry on and continue with making good music in his memory. Cheers Dave the Gnome |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bee Gees-And then there were two From: GUEST,john c Date: 12 Jan 03 - 07:49 AM The Bee Gees were the first group I ever saw live, around `66 in Edinburgh and they were magic. Apart from inspiring me to learn the guitar, their music has remained with me ever since. To Love Somebody is still one my all-time faves. Very, very sad news. |

I liked the 60s stuff a bit, but I thought that they were at their best as writers and producers. The late 70s/80s era of "Woman in Love" "Heartbreaker" etc. reveals, if nothing else, excellent songsmiths. Rest well, Maurice. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bee Gees- Maurice - And then there were two From: GUEST Date: 12 Jan 03 - 07:57 PM Thanks Guest. To be honest, although I recognised thier success and am sorry to read of Maurice's demise, the "Saturday Night Fever" stuff left me cold. I didn't enjoy the music or the high pitched singing. "Woman In Love" was a beautiful song... It seems that one was Robin/Barry Gibb. Any Maurice Gibb songs? |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bee Gees- Maurice - And then there were two From: Little Robyn Date: 12 Jan 03 - 09:59 PM Someone on the local radio said Maurice was bass - presumably in the harmony section rather than instrumentally. Which means he probably didn't do many solos or leads. I'm not really a fan of their music but I appreciate their harmonies and they did a lot for the early pop scene in Australia (which helped NZ too). Also, I admire their 'local louts make good' story. Robin and Maurice must have been about 8 years old when they started performing in public. According to their biography, they were heading for borstal but found fame instead. Good on ya boys. Robyn |

The twins were a wild pair, so it sounds like the bit about them heading for Borstal might be true. Today I heard an interview with the DJ who discovered them - he & the promoter of the races were responsible for their name. Both men had the initials BG, & the DJ referred to himself on air as "BG from (station name)" & taped them & sent the tape of the until then un-named trio to Sydney's top DJ & they were on their way to fame & fortune. sandra |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bee Gees- Maurice - And then there were From: SharonA Date: 13 Jan 03 - 10:11 AM Sad news indeed, and quite a loss. Apparently, the obituary that Catspaw read was incorrect. News reports are now saying that Maurice Gibb had a cardiac arrest before the emergency surgery for an intestinal blockage, but that he lived for a time after that. He had been rushed to Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami on Thursday night (January 9th) with severe stomach pains but did not pass away until late Saturday or early Sunday morning. Late yesterday, Barry Gibb made a statement to the BBC on behalf of the family, questioning Maurice's treatment at the hospital. His words, quoted on ABCNews.com: "The fact that they had to operate on Maurice during the shock of cardiac arrest, is very questionable, and we will pursue every factor, every element, every second of the timeline of the final hours of Maurice's life. We will pursue that relentlessly. That will be our quest from now on." He also said he had been told that Maurice's intestines were twisted because of a congenital defect and that doctors had removed 80 percent of his stomach during the surgery. After the surgery until his passing, Maurice's condition had been listed as critical but stable. There's no word yet about the immediate cause of death or what caused his condition to destablilize. A second cardiac arrest? Internal bleeding? I certainly don't blame the family for wanting to be sure that it wasn't caused by some mistake on the part of hospital staff. Whatever the reason, Maurice's passing must be a terrible shock to his loved ones. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bee Gees- Maurice - And then there were two From: catspaw49 Date: 13 Jan 03 - 01:13 PM Actually Sharon, that's about the same as what I sadi I'd read initially but it now appears there is some confusion on what happened and when which is what the family is questioning. The reports in the news vary as to whether the heart attack occured before or during the surgery for the intestinal problem. The congenital problem they describe was obviously quite serious as he collapsed at home on Wednesday. These conditions are not always susceptible to treatment without surgery. I'm not standing up for the Docs at this point, but I'd say since they removed 80% of his stomach (allegedly), then the intestinal problem was life threatening itself. Not many Docs will take on a high risk surgery without some discussion and I don't know that happened, but he had licked a cocaine problem and was a recovering alchoholic and smoker as well so the heart risk was probably high going in. When it comes to multiple problems then sometimes, depending on how serious the condition is, you roll the dice. Been there, done that. The family deserves some answers on what happened and when as well as the reasoning behind the surgery......Also, someone had to sign for this surgery as well. No matter.......a tragic loss to the music and to his family that he loved deeply. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bee Gees- Maurice - And then there were From: SharonA Date: 13 Jan 03 - 05:40 PM Spaw: Thanks for the clarification. I was confused by your initial post wherein you said you'd read that he died of the cardiac arrest just prior to undergoing the surgery (or did you mean that he died after the surgery as a result of the heart attack before the surgery?). I just wanted to make it clear that the reports say he lived for some time after the surgery. Indeed, a tragic loss. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bee Gees- Maurice - And then there were two From: katlaughing Date: 17 Jan 03 - 06:09 PM We watched a great documentary on them last night on the True Stories channel. Most of what it showed Maurice doing, even up to just recently, was keyboard, esp. fleshing out the tunes as they composed them together in the studio while jamming around. Thye said they always did the tune first then lyrics to match. They made it very clear that they never changed the tune to fit any words. The words had to fit or they got changed. They said after Andy died, even though he was a drug and alcohol addict, they found he had a heart problem which he'd known about for two years but had never told anyone else about it and that was basically what killed him. It was wonderful to see them working together and to hear them perform. Some of my favs include To Love Somebody and Words. Here is a really neat picture of Maurice at 15: click here. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bee Gees- Maurice - And then there were two From: Mark Cohen Date: 17 Jan 03 - 10:59 PM Just to shed a bit of light on the medical issue, which is still quite confusing. I believe that the congenital condition Maurice had is something called intestinal malrotation, and is not in itself fatal, but predisposes a person to a fatal complication. Malrotation happens during embryonic life. Normally, during development, the entire intestinal tract rotates in such a way that its blood supply (called the mesentery) gets "tacked down" neatly to the back of the abdominal cavity. If this does not happen, the "free-floating" mesentery can spontaneously twist on itself, kinking the major arteries and blocking the blood supply to part of the intestine: like twisting a loop in a garden hose. This condition, called volvulus, causes sudden excruciating abdominal pain, and, if not rapidly corrected by surgery, results in the death of some of the intestine, and, commonly, the patient. In a person who is born with malrotation, volvulus can occur at any time from infancy to adulthood....or never (though most of the time it happens in infancy or childhood, and is one of the causes of intestinal obstruction in a a newborn). There's no way of predicting or preventing it, unless the malrotation is detected by X-ray studies, that may be done for some unrelated problem. There are other malformations of the intestine that can lead to volvulus as well. From the little bit I've read about this case (which is undoubtedly only partly related to the truth), it would be surprising if physician error played any part in Maurice's death. Not impossible, but it's certainly not what would leap to mind. It sounds like he had a cardiac arrest from some unknown cause (heart attack would be a likely guess), was resuscitated, then developed the volvulus, had to have emergency surgery to try to save his gut, and the stress was too much for his damaged heart. Just a guess, but at least it's an educated one. Aloha, Mark |
