Thought some of you songwriters working for peace might be interested in this UNESCO project.

The UN declared the decade 2001-2010 the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for Children of the World. This UNESCO project, "New Songs for Peace" is meant to "be a book of songs available to teachers, activists, singers and others as a way of promoting both singing and a consciousness for peace". They are asking for submissions from songwriters for possible inclusion.

Also, the idea was raised on another thread recently about creating a Mudcat CD to raise awareness and funds for worthy peace projects, and I thought that idea worth refreshing!

Here's to peaceful thoughts ... and sounds!

"I destroy my enemies when I make them my friends." - Abraham Lincoln

"If you think you're too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito in the room." -
Anita Roddick

"When in despair I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won; there have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time they seem invincible, but in the end they always fail." - M.K.Gandhi

Peace, daylia

This is really neat, daylia, thanks! I thing Kevin McGrath should submit his White Snow of the Springtime song. It's beautiful and, if I'm not mistaken, is on one of the Mudcat CD's as covered by Aine and her hubby, Layne.

Kat thank you - what a lovely song! And kudos to both writer and performers! I think this is exactly the kind of stuff they're looking for - and I betcha there's more around here.

I phoned Honey Novick in Toronto this morning - she said they're looking for songs 'from the heart', rather than with a specific religious bent. She also assured me that there is plenty of peace activism going on in Canada right now. Anyone interested can contact Canadian Voice of Women for Peace at this link.

"Peace between countries must rest on the solid foundation of love between individuals" - Gandhi

"Youth is the first victim of war; the first fruit of peace. It takes 20 years or more of peace to make a man; it takes only 20 seconds of war to destroy him". - King Baudouin I

Couldn't resist those either ... daylia

Yeah, I was listening to some tapes of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Pacifica radio on the way to work today. He was talking about the Vietnam War and made the following powerful observation:

"War *anywhere* intensifies the chances of war *everywhere*...

Subject: Lyr Add: UNCLE SAM'S BREAK
From: Rustic Rebel
Date: 16 Jan 03 - 12:18 AM

Uncle Sam's Break

Chorus: Uncle Sam's gonna take a break. Uncle Sam's gonna take a break.

I can't stand this mess I've gotten us into
So now's your chance, people see what you can do.

1. You can't make a dollar over a dime, if you want to get on this plan of mine.
   The rich get richer, and the poor stay poor
   And we always need more and more.

Chorus

2. Acid rain it's a coming down.
    The earth will soon be one burial ground.
    Love canal, it's an example, send your water in to be sampled.

Chorus

3. The arms race is on, the waste is building.
    What good is it all, when it's just killing?
    Come young men it's time for registration, while your signing I'll be on vacation.

Chorus

4. The peace talks are going okay
    But where the hell is the U.S.A.?
    Do not worry, I won't draft you boys. When we have war, I'll put up decoys.

Chorus

5. We can all sit and talk about the problems in our land
    But now's the time we have to take a stand.
    'cuz Uncle sam's gonna take a break

6. It's up to you, it's up to me
    To change the world and what we see.
    We better do it now and we better do it fast, 'cuz Uncle Sam's break won't last.

Chorus-Repeat and fade out.

I wrote this around 1988, I was weird then too!
Peace, Rustic

Thans for that kat. I think I'll send it in.

The song is on Mudcat Plum, sung by Áine and Layne out in Texas. But if you click on this - White Snow of the Springtime - you should get the words, plus a link to a RealAudio sound file of Áine with Layne, and another of me singing it. And the tune written down in musical notation (but probably not too accurately, since I did it myself, and I'm not too good at that. If there is anyone out there who knows more about such things who would like to check it out and maybe do it better, I'd be grateful).

I opened that link which daylia gave us. One puzzle - what's a "lead sheet"? Sounds like something you'd put on the roof of a church to stop the rain getting in.

McGrath - as I use the term, a "lead sheet" is simply the melody written out with the lyrics and chords, as opposed to a complete arrangement.

McGrath I do teach music theory, and at first glance your notation looked fine. I can go over it more carefully if you like and help you with a final draft. The song is beautiful!

One thing I did notice is that Aine and Layne sang it in the key of Ab, you sang it in D, and the lead sheet has it in C. Should the notation be in the same key as the version you submit? Or are the key differences just a product of the computer's recording? Recording is NOT something I have much experience with. But I could help you transpose the notation if you like.

Thanks jeffp - I thought it might be something like thta.

And thanks, daylia. I'm reasonably sure the pitch of the notes are right - but I'm never too sure about the timing and so forth. So if you could check that it'd be great.

It's written down in C because that way I didn't have to worry about all those sharps and flats. And anyway if I'm ever trying to work out a tune from print, it's easier if it's written in C, for the same reason. I don't take the key a song is written in as any indication that it'll necessarily be the one I'll be likely to sing it in. (And the key I sing a song in can vary from occasion to occasion, depending on what feels most comfortable.)

I sang it in D because that's where it felt comfortable when I taped it, and I take it that was the same reason Áine and Layne picked their key.

It might be handy though having a version of it in D, since it's a handy sort of key for folk sessions. Ab - well, I don't many people would be playing in that without capoing up from G or something like that.

I'll be sticking a copy of my CD, with my version and Áine's and the words and the tune, in the post to this project in a few days. Thanks for drawing my attention to it.

That is a lovely song McGrath.
Working on some of my own since the topic came up in the thread Daylia talked about. I still think it's a good idea to at least get started in that direction of a 'mudcat full of peace' cd.
We also dicussed (or was it just me?) on doing some collaborating on songs if anyone was interested.

Rustic, I like the idea of collaberation!   A "Mudcat Full of Peace" CD sounds like a goal well within reach, with all you talented 'Catters out there! I'm working on a few collaberative ideas as well right now, with some local (and not-so-local!) 'Cats full of peace'! Exciting!

And to continue Bobert's line of thought...

"Humanity can no longer be tragically bound to the starless midnight of rascism and war". - Martin Luther King

Here's an opportunity for poets young and old to contribute a few lines to an International Peace Poem . Looks like a great site for teachers as and parents as well.

"I dream of giving birth to child who will ask "Mother, what was war?" - Eve Merriam

Oh, that'll be the day ... maybe it's not so far off ...

But it seems further off today than it did back in the old cold war days. Then it seemed that if that stupidity could be sorted out there, and a few local heads get banged together in family squabbles lkke Ireland and the Holy Land, and there was no reason we couldn't get there.

Seems like the stone we were rolling to top of the hill has rolled back down to the bottom on the other side, and it's all to do again.

Thanks Jaze, I'll try to find it ... except I just found out the other day, (on a Mudcat thread) that share-file programs like Kazaa are considered piracy?!? AARRGGHHH!! I'm disappointed because I'd found such a wide variety of music there while I was still blissfully unaware of the legal implications ... stuff it's almost impossible to find in the stores anymore...

McGrath, I agree.   *sigh*   Seems like the exploitation of human and natural resources, as well ruthless campaigns to ensure political and military domination of the Third World have become almost uncontrollable since the advent of 'economic globalization'. But there has to be an 'up' side to this 'Brave New World Order', one that balances the 'down' ... and maybe we're creating it right here, with projects like these ...

Peace and hope

I like that song, The White Snow of the Springtime, McGrath. And, both sound files that I listened to, as well!

I may submit this one, A Garden Walk (Echoes of 911).

It may be considered too...pensive, or gloomy, though...don't know.   It's in my Zip file 2 of my music stuff, at my site. Someday I'll make a better website or at least a list of my titles that more clear...that'll be in a few months, though...

I was greatly affected by the events of 911 and it brought out many emotions and thoughts, some which inspired this song.

Bellowbelle - try as I might I couldn't get either the Windows Media Player or Real One Player to play your song! AARRGGHHH ... any tips would be appreciated!

But your descriptions 'pensive' and 'brought out many emotions and thoughts' makes it sound like it indeed comes straight 'from the heart'. And that's exactly the kind of music Honey Novick told me they were looking for. So IMO don't be bashful ... go for it!

A Garden Walk (Echoes of 9/11)

What if this were the last beau-ti-ful day?
I nev-er thought I would be think-ing this way
Talk of the end-times was just to ap-pease
The love-lorn, who could-n't bear liv-ing in ease
How strange, now, to pon-der an im-mi-nent doom
O'er the hush of a sweet-scent-ed rose in full bloom.

I want my heart to stop break-ing
And it's as heav-y as a stone
Thrown a-gainst night's dark cloud
Fal-len o-ver me like a shroud
It ex-plodes in-to frag-ments like stars
Shin-y patch-es of scars

What if this were the last beau-ti-ful rose?
This gar-den, a grave, Earth gone to its fi-nal re-pose;
For years, heav-en's tears have at-tend-ed as rain,
Then a-rose to the sun to be hoped for, again.
How strange, now, this fun-'ral for life's end-less round,
With no mourn-er but I left to bur-y the ground.

(Repeat Chorus and Verse 1)

I want my heart to stop break-ing...
~~~~~
The above is the basic lyric (by me, Bellowbelle, etc...). The link previously posted is just a PDF; I do have a sound file, in ZIP file 2 of the MIDI files on my site, BUT....the .mid is not too good!!! Sounds more like some 1950's doowop than a thoughtful ballad, the way it came out. (I can't do .wav files, just these kinda-weird .mid files.)
Anyway...there's the basic thought.
Bellowbelle your poignant lyrics almost brought me to tears here ... keep it up girl and again, imo submit. Submit!!
One comforting thought - this Earth was alive and kickin for billions of years before humans were around, and will probably still be around for billions of years after all that remains of us is fossils. So take heart - I'm pretty sure the planet will look after 'Herself' no problem. I hope.
I have these two songs. I don't know quite how to submit stuff like music in sound or staff but I'm working on it.
The Axises of Evil
to the tune of Agathella Station
1. Of all the world's ills there is none that's more evil,
More gruesome or dread than the terrorist threat,
The President says that they're really awful people,
And when he's not grinning, you can tell he's upset.
CH: We'll march off to war like good little soldiers,
We'll march off to war for President Bush,
Until we destroy all the axises of evil,
For there's freedom to fight for and a lifestyle to push.
2. George Bush is angered by the death of civillians,
He finds it outrageous like anyone would,
So when he kills thousands and speaks about collateral,
He's not being callous, you've misunderstood.
3. Now some bombs are dirty and cause mass destruction,
But our bombs are smart and they'll solve all our woes,
Starvation and grief might appear to be a crisis,
But really we're helping as everyone knows.
4. To help foster peace we'll use words like "Islamist",
To make it appear that they're all so extreme,
Whereas our church is pure and could never be corrupted,
And of world domination, it would not even dream.
5. So send us your chilldren, we'll fight against terror,
And suchlike emotions that lay people low,
We'll fight them with guns and with lots of bloody slaughter,
But don't ask who's winning or how long to go.
and then to an original tune:
Come on then, conscript me!
1. There's a rumour of conscription hanging 'round at No. 10,
But no-one's been on telly with the how and why and when,
Nonetheless I found I fretted, but only for a while,
And then I started thinking, with a slightly crooked smile:
CH: Come on then, conscript me! You'll wish you never did,
I'm a can of worms, be my guest, take off the lid,
For war's a game for powermongers, not for folks like me,
And if you force it on me, watch how peaceful I can be.
2. I'll chat about the havoc war will wreak on people's lives,
And I'll ask who'll tell their girlfriend about raping Muslim wives,
I'll call it Gulf War Syndrome every time I have a cold,
And I'll answer "Whose life is it?" when I don't like what I'm told.
3. I'll talk so much of bums that all the men will think I'm gay,
But even if you ask I won't be certain either way,
I'll never fail to squeak and jump each time the sergeant yells,
And I'll never learn to shoot a gun or launch a mortar shell.
4. I'll rant about the biosphre and how we're all just one,
A living planet powered by the brightness of the sun,
I'll sew patches on my uniform of rainbows doves and trees,
And I'll skip instead of walking and I'l march with wobbly knees.
