Subject: New Stan Hugill website From: Peter Kasin Date: 15 Jan 03 - 02:26 AM There is a website under construction dedicated to Stan Hugill. It is being created by England's Jan and Ken Lardner, with the blessings and participation of Stan Hugill's widow. Though still under construction, there are some entries to see on the site. Stories and reminiscences of Stan Hugill are being sought by Jan and Ken for the site. If you have any that you'd like to share, they would love to hear from you. Thanks, Jan and Ken, for this effort to preserve and share with the many, Stan Hugill's legacy. The site can be found at www.stanhugill.com |

Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 15 Jan 03 - 08:53 AM Clicked on that link, and I nearly jumped out of my skin when he bellowed out at me. I'll never forget the weekend back in 1962 that a bunch of us, from club that used to meet at the York and Albany pub nearby, spent at Cecil Sharp House, as singing crew for the record that came out as "Shanties of the Seven Seas". It was stereo, so he had us walking round in circles for the capstans shanties, and lined up pulling on light cables for the hauling shanties. There wasn't any masts and rigging handy or beyond doubt he'd have had us climbing up them. Stan Kelly from Liverpool was there in the chorus as well. |
Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: Schantieman Date: 15 Jan 03 - 08:55 AM Just after he bellowed someone came into my office! |
Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: Wolfgang Date: 15 Jan 03 - 09:03 AM Thanks for the link. It is a very fine resource already even now in the state of construction. Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: Charley Noble Date: 15 Jan 03 - 10:40 AM Great to have this resource. Who does one contact now to request a release for the use of Stan's artwork for a forthcoming songbook publication, his widow, his sons? Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: Dead Horse Date: 15 Jan 03 - 11:35 AM Well its about time :-) |
Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: radriano Date: 15 Jan 03 - 11:44 AM Well, I can't access streaming audio from work so I can't hear Stan's voice on the website but thanks for sharing the link with us, Chanteyranger. |
Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: Winters Wages Date: 15 Jan 03 - 11:52 AM Fantastic Website..Thanks Chanteyranger for the info WW |
Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: GUEST,Chanteyranger Date: 15 Jan 03 - 12:23 PM Thanks, Gareth, for supplying the blickie. I left my cut and paste skills in kindergarten. |
Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 15 Jan 03 - 01:38 PM I can't access streaming audio from work That's probably as well, or he'd have woken everybody up and sent them running round to find what was happening. |
Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: pattyClink Date: 15 Jan 03 - 01:57 PM Outstanding. Thanks for the link. |
Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: radriano Date: 15 Jan 03 - 02:41 PM Oh, I don't know, some of the folks around here could do with a wake-up occasionally. The irony of my situation is that I finally got a CPU with a sound card at the same time that new Internet protocols went into effect that block streaming audio. Damn that Murphy and his laws! |
Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: Jeri Date: 15 Jan 03 - 05:36 PM Charley, I'd never seen any of his paintings before and they're absolutely brilliant. Lots of ships, but take a look at "'Captain Morgan's Sacking of Panama' painted on a linen bed sheet in Milag P.O.W camp Germany October 1942" Thank you Chanteyranger and Gareth! |
Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: GUEST Date: 15 Jan 03 - 05:40 PM Great idea, shame that the site is so badly designed and wrought. I've emailed a few technical suggestions. Bravo, anyway |
Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: GUEST,Q Date: 15 Jan 03 - 05:52 PM Audio OK on Internet Explorer, but absent on Navigator or Netscape. Reading the article on Folk-Music in an old Chambers Encyclopaedia (1950 ed.). It says: "The making of new folk-songs has stopped in urban communities and the use of steam instead of sail at sea means that there will be no new shanties." |
Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: GUEST,Jan Date: 15 Jan 03 - 06:24 PM Thanks everyone for the comments and feed back we are really pleased that the majority seem to be happy with things - it is still in the early days with lots more to come ! To MaGrath of Harlow PLEASE email me with the story its exactly the type of thing we want to include ! Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: Charley Noble Date: 15 Jan 03 - 10:41 PM Some day, I hope, there will be a biography of this larger than life shantyman, and an unexpurgated edition of the songs he collected. Among other things I would like to read more about Stan organizing shantying while in a German P.O.W. camp in WW II. I've always been fond of Stan's pen and ink illustrations for Shanties of the Seven Seas, and it would be nice to see some of them posted to the Website. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: Dead Horse Date: 16 Jan 03 - 06:57 AM Reading McGrath's posting had me wondering if the man himself had 'em drawing pints for the pumping shanties:-) |
Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: curmudgeon Date: 16 Jan 03 - 12:23 PM A wonderful site, but I didn't see a lot of Mudcatters on the member roster. Join up and keep me company -- Tom |
Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: Naemanson Date: 16 Jan 03 - 12:33 PM I have a friend who wrote a song about Stan after meeting him at Mystic. It's a wonderful song. I just emailed him to tell him of the site and suggest he post his song there. |

Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: GUEST,CJB Date: 12 Nov 16 - 02:47 AM Alas, that domain appears to have expired. A look at the archived copy suggests that the Web page hasn't been updated since 2003. http://preview.tinyurl.com/jpqqdgu or https://web.archive.org/web/20150219153241/http://www.stanhugill.com/ |
Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: DaveRo Date: 12 Nov 16 - 03:24 AM It expired on 1st November this year, I think - but I'm not sure. The registrant is Ken Lardner of the site I posted above. Maybe he forgot to renew, maybe not. If anyone values the site I suggest they contact him and ask. (His phone number is on the domain register BTW. PM me if you want it.) |

Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: FreddyHeadey Date: 13 Nov 16 - 05:43 PM Seems to be in hand. I've had a reply from Jan "...we are currently re sorting this and will possible be moving it to the same server as the Chantey Cabin – will let you know when we have been successful !!! We actually let it lapse because we thought that there was no longer any interest in it as a website Jan" |
Subject: RE: New Stan Hugill website From: GUEST,Jan Date: 19 Nov 16 - 05:24 PM Well we have almost completed the transfer!! The Stan Hugill website is now accessed via The Chantey Cabin any problems please contact us - as always very happy to help. Still working on it and "tidying it up" |
