Subject: Chord Req:"to two old songs From: GUEST,GUEST Date: 15 Jan 03 - 07:58 PM Anybody know the guitar chords to the songs "Poor Little Joe" and "Christine Leroy" thanks in advance. Poor Little Joe While strolling one night, thru New Yorks City's gay throng I met a poor boy who was singing a song Although he was singing he wanted for bread And though he was smiling, he wished himself dead Cold blew th blast and down came th snow He had no place to shelter him, no where to go No Mother to guide him, in th grave she lies low Cast on th cold street was poor little Joe A carriage passed by with a lady inside I looked on poor Joes face and saw that he cried He followed the carriage, she not even smiled But fondly caressed her own darling child I looked on this waif and I thought it was odd Is this poor, ragged urchin forgotten by God Then I saw by the lamplight that shone on the snow The pale deadly features of, poor little Joe. fr.Max Hunter folk song collection. Christine Leroy No brother, I'll never be better It is useless to tell me so now This broken heart only is waiting For a resting place under the sun I am dreaming today of a bridal One year ago only tonight When she stood 'neath th gaslights above her In her jewels and garments, so white Jewels shone bright on her tresses Look back from fair --- brow And glistened like tins in th gaslight On fringes that's whitier than snow When she laid her soft hand on my husband I knew that he thought me a toy By th side of th raidant glory Was the beautiful Christine Leroy Time passed away and my husband Grew thoughtless an' careword each day And I knew that th wiles of a Demon Had so artfully lured him away Till at last, one bright evening I found them My hopes and my life were destroyed Hand in hand with her head on his shoulder Set my husband and Christine Leroy So, brother be kind to your sister For this poor heart is sadden and faint At the thought of th wiles of a Demon In th beautiful form of a saint When I lie 'neath the snow drifts of winter Where no sorrow nor thing can destroy Will you tell them they murdered me, Brother God, forgive him and Christine Leroy. fr.Max Hunter folk song collection. |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: 'Poor Little Joe' From: M.Ted Date: 15 Jan 03 - 09:56 PM Christine Leroy is just "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean"-- Poor Little Joe, as sung by Mildred Ivie, and accompanied, I think, on guitar by Max Hunter, is in the key of B, in 6/8 time(three beats per chord): ||B B/ E E/ B B / B F#7/ B B/ E B /B B /F#7 B|| In E, it would be: ||E E/A A/E E/E B7/ E E/A E/E E/B7 E|| |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: 'Poor Little Joe' From: Rustic Rebel Date: 15 Jan 03 - 10:28 PM Earl Johnson and his clodhoppers did Poor little Joe way back. It was written in the late 1800's. I tried to do a search for you Guest, but only came up with song notations. No chords, but it looks like M. Ted got you covered. Peace, Rustic |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: 'Poor Little Joe' From: GUEST,ClaireBear Date: 16 Jan 03 - 11:29 AM Not that you asked, but my father used to sing a different last verse to "Poor Little Joe," and I like it a trifle better: A policeman strolled by, with his cold heavy tread You'd think he was waking the graves of the dead. He passed by the spot where, down under the snow With his face turned to Heaven, lay poor little Joe. Claire |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: 'Poor Little Joe' From: GUEST Date: 10 Mar 11 - 02:33 PM Hi my grandfather taught me poor Joe As a child but the verse he sang to me Went like this. "Poor Joe lay on the doorstep All covered with snow And the Angels were calling On poor little Joe" I don't know if the songs are related But I would be interested to know if they are. The song would definitely be pre 1945. |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: 'Poor Little Joe' From: GUEST Date: 04 Aug 18 - 09:37 PM My Mother used to sing this when I was a child in the early 1930s When I was out walking through London's great town I met a poor boy who was singing a song although he was singing he wanted for bread although he was singing he wished himself dead. Chorus. Cold blows the blast down came the snow he had nowhere to shelter and nowhere to go No mother to guide him in the grave she lies low Cast on this wide world was poor little Joe. The night it was dreary the clock had struck one A policeman was passing his duty was done said he: what is this as he looked at poor Joe. For there on the doorstep the poor boy had died. With his face turned to Heaven all covered in snow the Angels were watching and beckoning to Joe Chorus. |
