But I've just typed out the lyrics of An Bháinis a Bhí i gCána and I suppose that song about the wedding feast at Cana might be suitable to be sung at modern-day wedding. The lyrics are happy enough though the air I learned it to is a rather solemn sounding chant and I wouldn't describe it as a "lovesong". |

A Stór Mo Chroí (Love of my heart) Which is a lovely one. There's a good recording of it on the Chieftans, Heart of Stone recording. It's about a persons partner who has left their home land to make a better living for them. Whilst the one left behind longs for the return of the their true love. Some nice words.. Or Shule Aroon Which is in Gaelic, nice song I've more, but unfortunately I 'm in the middle of moving house, so all my stuff is in boxes! Ella |

That's the problem, the laments for lost love have the most beautiful tunes. Sadhbh Ní Bhruinealla may have the same fault, and the lyrics are rather boastful. But judge for yourself; lyrics and translation and sound sample should be found at Peadar Ó Ceannabháin from the album Mo Chuid den tSaol (click on "samplaí" or "samples") Mo Bhuachaillín Ceanasach is a song from a woman's point of view. Lyrics are suitable, don't know about tune as it's a churning song rather than a love song really. Recorded by Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin. Bi-lingual macaronic songs "One morning in June agus mé dul ag spaisteoireacht" and "Cogar Mogar" may be suitable. "One morning in June" has been recorded by Joe Heany and I've heard a few people sing the song at sessions and other musical gatherings. I don't know of recordings of "Cogar Mogar" which is in published in "Cuisle an Cheoil" and in "Ár Ceól Féinig". "The Snowy Breasted Pearl" has been suggested,but it isn't all so happy: "I've sought her hear to gain... ... But I've tried with ceaseless sigh - Yet tried in vain." On the other hand, Petrie based his song on the Irish ... the Irish language lyrics are posted on Mudcat already ... so there's an opportunity to sing verses in both languages. You might get away singing a part of the Coolin, omitting the sad verses. Sometimes it's hard to decide whether lyrics are sad or happy. Many songs which are positive and optimistic overall have a sad element -they opine, what will I do if she won't have me - or they mention opposition (Bridín Bheasaí: Is in ainneoin do na cléire, Go dtógfainn thú mar chéile") - or there is a dialogue in which the woman initially spurns or questions the sincerity of her suitor. "'S é Fáth mo Bhuartha" starts off saying it's the reason for my sorrow that I can't be in the lonely glen with my love, but from thereon waxes pleasantly lyrical about love. Some more to look over Éist mo stór Mo Mháire Óg Mo Mháire (Clannad lyrics) according to bride's hair colour:Cailín na Gruaige Doinne, but if she has ginger hair, you'll need to omit the last verse of An Cailín Rua Mo Chailín Bán again a problem with the last line, but the other verses are suitable |

The song was written by a lady - Jane Finlayson, for her sailor from another of the Scottish islands. They DID later get married. Another Scottish Gaelic song which would be appropriate is Cailinn Mo Ruin-sa. It's written from the point of view of the man returning to his love. It could be worked with the Fear a Bhata as an answer song of sorts. The Second song is sung to a happier tune than Fear a Bhata. However Fear a Bhata is quite haunting as a tune. |

I'm guessing your friend a) doesn't speak Irish, and knows very little about Irish traditional music in Irish or English; b) like many others of Irish ancestry, likely wishes or believes there SHOULD be a body of lovely, happy songs that fit with their personal view of what they want sung at their wedding, and; c) probably isn't really giving much time and attention to the music for the wedding. Now, if any one of the above is true, there isn't much that can be done for the happy couple, I'm afraid. There just isn't a body of cheesy sorts of "Wind Beneath My Wings" songs in the Irish tradition, no matter how badly some people want there to be that one perfect song for THEIR wedding. There are many songs with beautiful melodies. Most traditional love songs are pretty dark, stark, and ring true to reality. That is to say, the songs are about arranged marriages, the cursing of arranged marriages, the rake running off after impregnating the girl, and infidelity. Brides are notoriously superstitious about the singing of such sorts of songs at their weddings, regardless of how beautiful they are. They much prefer the illusion that all will be romantic and rosy for them once the ring is on the finger, and on the day, who can blame them? I don't mean to sound like a downer. It is just that there is a lot of beautiful music that can be used, especially if one looks at religious songs praising Mary and Bridget, that sort of thing. But they have nothing to do with marriage. They are just nice sounding, and vocal arrangements can be done for solo or chorus, that sort of thing. There are many, many wonderful songs, and CDs of Gaelic songs that you could use to come up with something really beautiful. But the subject matter of the songs doesn't have anything to do with love and happiness. |

Also, 'O gin I were a baron's heir' - but that one's Scottish, isn't it? Actually, looking through my song books, most of the Irish love songs have a sad twist to them - 'now he's left me' or 'she's gone to be wed to another' type of ending. I was thinking of 'The Banks of the Bann' but it mentions 'her cruel parents' and they might not like that. 'Rose of Allendale' isn't really Irish but you might get away with it. 'The Verdent braes o' Skreen' has a sad bit in the middle but ends with 'to the arms that I love best' - it might be OK. Then there's 'Red is the rose', perhaps with a few word changes - my version ends with 'my heart is breaking forever.' If you change that to 'I'll be your true love forever.' like the first verse, then it would be lovely. Where does 'Dumbarton's Drums' come from? Is that Irish enough? Maybe you could sing 'Searching for lambs' - just don't say where it comes from - give it the Oirish treatment and it'll be fine! I'll keep looking! Robyn |

Or songs in English. But I can't think of any traditional love songs as Gaeilge that would be upbeat enough for a wedding. Which is why Irish people, like other English speakers, use songs by Celine Dion and Whitney Houston, of the "Wind Beneath My Wings" sort. |
