All my wife's grandparents came over on the boat from Ireland to Boston.Their lack of happiness in songs is similar to the old Southern Appalachian songs I heard as a boy.One of my wife's cousins told me Irish Alzheimer's is where you forget every thing but a grudge.

Subject: Wedding feast of Cana (song link)
From: Felipa
Date: 12 Feb 17 - 08:50 AM

I suppose the wedding which inspired this discussion thread went ahead in 2003. But I've just typed out the lyrics of An Bháinis a Bhí i gCána and I suppose that song about the wedding feast at Cana might be suitable to be sung at modern-day wedding. The lyrics are happy enough though the air I learned it to is a rather solemn sounding chant and I wouldn't describe it as a "lovesong".

Felipa,

I think just seeing the word "happiness" in reference to a collection of Irish songs was so mind-boggling that I lost track of what was being sought.

I didn't resurrect the discussion for the table of contents. I resurrected it in the hopes of getting more song ideas from the many mudcatters who are more musically knowledgeable than I am. Thanks.

yes, Mrrzy, which is why Elizabeth had to make a special request for a happy song.

Amy Love, didnt you notice the request was for a song IN IRISH?
and I would certainly dispute how "happy" some of the songs in that book are ("She died of a fever and no one could save her" - Molly Malone, "The harp that once through Tara's halls The soul of music shed Now hangs as mute on Tara's walls As if that soul were fled." etc. Hardly worth resurrecting this discussion for that table of contents, methinks.

Perhaps some can be found in this book:

Happiness is... 70 Irish Songs

The songs:

Peg o' my heart --
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral that's an Irish lullaby --
When Irish eyes are smiling --
It's the same old shillelagh --
Mother Machree --
Ireland must be heaven for my mother came from there --
Peggy O'Neil --
My wild Irish rose --
It's a great day for the Irish --
Wearin' of the green --
The rose of Tralee --
The Kerry dance --
Londonderry Air (Would God I were the tender apple blossom) --
A little bit of heaven (Shure they call it Ireland) --
Did your mother come from Ireland --
When it's moonlight in Mayo (Two Irish eyes are shining) --
River Shannon moon --
Widow Machree --
Be sure and kiss the Blarney Stone --
The top of the mornin' --
A bit o' the brogue --
The harp that once thro' Tara's halls --
The daughter of Peggy O'Neil --
Molly O! --
Don't you love to dream of dear old Ireland --
Let Erin remember the days of old --
When I dream of old Erin I'm dreaming of you --
The girl I left behind me --
That's how I spell I-R-E-L-A-N-D --
Kitty of Coleraine --
Fancy Nancy Clancy --
Nay, tell me not dear --
Springtime in Mayo means lovetime with you --
I wish I were on yonder hill --
Bendemeer's stream --
Night closed around (After the battle) --
The dear little shamrock --
The last rose of summer --
I'll take you home again, Kathleen --
I love my love in the morning --
Norah, the pride of Kildare --
The lass with the delicate air --
The rakes of Mallow--
Oh! 'Tis sweet to think --
It takes a great big Irish heart to sing an Irish song --
Saint Patrick was a gentleman --
Erin! The tear and the smile in thine eyes --
Molly Malone (Cockles and mussels) --
The minstrel boy --
I'm a poor stranger and far from my home --
What an Irishman means by "Machree" --
Off to Philadelphia --
Killarney (By Killarney's lakes and fells) --
Who threw the overalls in Mistress Murphy's chowder --
I dreamt that I dwelt in marble halls --
Father O'Flynn --
There's something in the name of Ireland that the whole world seems to love --
Come back to Erin --
Kathleen Mavourneen --
You don't have to be Irish to be welcome in an Irishman's home --
The pretty girl milking her cow (It was on a fine summer's morning) --
The angels' whisper --
Garry Owen --
Sweetheart darlin' --
Lesbia hath a beaming eye --
The snowy-breasted pearl (Oh! She is not like the rose) --
The low-backed car --
Scanlan's rose song --
Sweet Rosie O'Grady --
Believe me if all those endearing young charms.

Dear Elizabeth,

You've got some fantastic suggestions already; but, I'll add my own, since Amos gave me the headsup on this thread ;-)

If you're confident enough in your Irish, why don't you give Dónal agus Mórag a try? It's a very happy little tune, and the folks at the wedding that have some Irish will get a kick out of it, I believe. *BG*

The Rose of Tralee is a beautiful and happy love song, but I only know it in English, and don't know if it has an Irish version.

I'll ask Áine if she has any candidates as she sings as often in Irish as in English.

Bit of a hard one, to find a happy irish love song... as most are love songs with a - oh she's left me but I still love her - or oh he's left me but I still love him, my love died and I still love him/her, my love is marrying another but I still love them... etc.

A lovely one though is...

A Stór Mo Chroí (Love of my heart)

Which is a lovely one. There's a good recording of it on the Chieftans, Heart of Stone recording.

It's about a persons partner who has left their home land to make a better living for them. Whilst the one left behind longs for the return of the their true love. Some nice words..

Or Shule Aroon

Which is in Gaelic, nice song

I've more, but unfortunately I 'm in the middle of moving house, so all my stuff is in boxes!

Ella

interesting that someone had the same problem seeking a Scots Gaelic wedding song Most songs were either too sad or too jaunty.

Táimse agus Máire is a song of a happy marriage, but looking at other people's suggestions, I wonder if it is too jaunty. That's the problem, the laments for lost love have the most beautiful tunes.
Sadhbh Ní Bhruinealla may have the same fault, and the lyrics are rather boastful. But judge for yourself; lyrics and translation and sound sample should be found at Peadar Ó Ceannabháin from the album Mo Chuid den tSaol (click on "samplaí" or "samples")
Mo Bhuachaillín Ceanasach is a song from a woman's point of view. Lyrics are suitable, don't know about tune as it's a churning song rather than a love song really. Recorded by Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin.
Bi-lingual macaronic songs "One morning in June agus mé dul ag spaisteoireacht" and "Cogar Mogar" may be suitable. "One morning in June" has been recorded by Joe Heany and I've heard a few people sing the song at sessions and other musical gatherings. I don't know of recordings of "Cogar Mogar" which is in published in "Cuisle an Cheoil" and in "Ár Ceól Féinig".
"The Snowy Breasted Pearl" has been suggested, but it isn't all so happy: "I've sought her hear to gain... ... But I've tried with ceaseless sigh - Yet tried in vain." On the other hand, Petrie based his song on the Irish ... the Irish language lyrics are posted on Mudcat already ... so there's an opportunity to sing verses in both languages.
You might get away singing a part of the Coolin, omitting the sad verses.
Sometimes it's hard to decide whether lyrics are sad or happy. Many songs which are positive and optimistic overall have a sad element -they opine, what will I do if she won't have me - or they mention opposition (Bridín Bheasaí: Is in ainneoin do na cléire, Go dtógfainn thú mar chéile") - or there is a dialogue in which the woman initially spurns or questions the sincerity of her suitor. "'S é Fáth mo Bhuartha" starts off saying it's the reason for my sorrow that I can't be in the lonely glen with my love, but from thereon waxes pleasantly lyrical about love.
Some more to look over
Éist mo stór
Mo Mháire Óg
Mo Mháire (Clannad lyrics)
according to bride's hair colour:Cailín na Gruaige Doinne, but if she has ginger hair, you'll need to omit the last verse of An Cailín Rua
Mo Chailín Bán again a problem with the last line, but the other verses are suitable

If you are not a Gaelic speaker yourself, you would find it very hard to learn a song in Gaelic, as the pronunciation is very different from English.

If I were you, I would type some key words into Google, and see what comes up, if you can't find something here.

Oh yes, the song is about the longing of a woman for her sailor, who is far away and has been for a while.

The song was written by a lady - Jane Finlayson, for her sailor from another of the Scottish islands. They DID later get married.

Another Scottish Gaelic song which would be appropriate is Cailinn Mo Ruin-sa. It's written from the point of view of the man returning to his love. It could be worked with the Fear a Bhata as an answer song of sorts. The Second song is sung to a happier tune than Fear a Bhata. However Fear a Bhata is quite haunting as a tune.

I would recommend Fear a Bhata or the Boat-man. This is a Scottish Gaelic song, but there is a version in Irish Gaelic. Here is a thread with the words in the Irish as supplied by Philippa.

Fear a' Bhata - Thread #5494

I'm sure others who have a good knowledge of Irish will appear soon with specific songs they can recommend.

Elizabeth, I think it is impossible to say what your friend would find appropriate, and I'm not trying to be rude. I'm guessing your friend a) doesn't speak Irish, and knows very little about Irish traditional music in Irish or English; b) like many others of Irish ancestry, likely wishes or believes there SHOULD be a body of lovely, happy songs that fit with their personal view of what they want sung at their wedding, and; c) probably isn't really giving much time and attention to the music for the wedding.

Now, if any one of the above is true, there isn't much that can be done for the happy couple, I'm afraid. There just isn't a body of cheesy sorts of "Wind Beneath My Wings" songs in the Irish tradition, no matter how badly some people want there to be that one perfect song for THEIR wedding.

There are many songs with beautiful melodies. Most traditional love songs are pretty dark, stark, and ring true to reality. That is to say, the songs are about arranged marriages, the cursing of arranged marriages, the rake running off after impregnating the girl, and infidelity. Brides are notoriously superstitious about the singing of such sorts of songs at their weddings, regardless of how beautiful they are. They much prefer the illusion that all will be romantic and rosy for them once the ring is on the finger, and on the day, who can blame them?

I don't mean to sound like a downer. It is just that there is a lot of beautiful music that can be used, especially if one looks at religious songs praising Mary and Bridget, that sort of thing. But they have nothing to do with marriage. They are just nice sounding, and vocal arrangements can be done for solo or chorus, that sort of thing. There are many, many wonderful songs, and CDs of Gaelic songs that you could use to come up with something really beautiful. But the subject matter of the songs doesn't have anything to do with love and happiness.

Yes, 'The Lark in the Clear Air' was sung at our wedding.
Also, 'O gin I were a baron's heir' - but that one's Scottish, isn't it?
Actually, looking through my song books, most of the Irish love songs have a sad twist to them - 'now he's left me' or 'she's gone to be wed to another' type of ending.
I was thinking of 'The Banks of the Bann' but it mentions 'her cruel parents' and they might not like that.
'Rose of Allendale' isn't really Irish but you might get away with it.
'The Verdent braes o' Skreen' has a sad bit in the middle but ends with 'to the arms that I love best' - it might be OK.
Then there's 'Red is the rose', perhaps with a few word changes - my version ends with 'my heart is breaking forever.' If you change that to 'I'll be your true love forever.' like the first verse, then it would be lovely.
Where does 'Dumbarton's Drums' come from? Is that Irish enough?
Maybe you could sing 'Searching for lambs' - just don't say where it comes from - give it the Oirish treatment and it'll be fine!
I'll keep looking!
Robyn

My personal recommendation for Irish trad music for weddings is usually "Haste to the Wedding".

Well, you could try contemporary songs...Enya, Clannad, that sort of stuff. Or religious songs. Or songs in English. But I can't think of any traditional love songs as Gaeilge that would be upbeat enough for a wedding.

Which is why Irish people, like other English speakers, use songs by Celine Dion and Whitney Houston, of the "Wind Beneath My Wings" sort.
