Subject: College Fight Songs
From: musicmick

I'm planning a workshop that will feature college fight songs and drinking songs. I know "I'm a Ramblin' Wreck From Georgia Tech" and, to the same tune, the Univ of Virginia drinking song, "From Vinegar Bend to Rugby Road". I have most of the words for "Drink a Highball at Nightfall" (Penn), "Roar, Lion, Roar" (Columbia) and "Lord Geoffry Amherst Was a Soldier for the King", and I can still stumble through my old highschool fight song, "Swing Out Behind the Men who Fight For th Crimson and the Gold" (Central High, 210)
I am embarrassed to admit that I dont know most of the Notre Dame song or that Boola Boola thing or, even "Bulldog, Bulldog, Bow Wow Wow" I do know the Wiffenpoof Song and the West Point classic, "Bennie Haven's, Oh" but just two verse of that one.
P.S. Dont send Lehrer's "Fight Fiercely, Harvard". I'm looking for real songs, not takeoffs. (Although, that was as brilliant as any lampoon ever written)
I thank you in advance.

The 2003 National Champion Ohio State Buckeyes have 2 very well known songs, "Across the Field" and the "Buckeye Battle Cry"

"Across the Field"

Fight the team across the field
Show them Ohio's here,
Set the earth reverberating
With a mighty cheer,
Rah! Rah! Rah!
Hit them hard and see how they fall,
Never let that team get the ball,
Hail, hail, the gang's all here,
So let's win that old conference now.

"Buckeye Battle Cry"

In old Ohio there's a team
That's known throughout the land
Eleven warriors brave and bold,
Whose fame will ever stand.
And when the ball goes over,
Our cheers will reach the sky,
Ohio Field will hear again
The Buckeye Battle Cry!

Drive, Drive on down the field,
Men of the scarlet and gray;
Don't let them through that line,
We've got to win this game today,
COME ON OHIO!
Smash through to victory,
We cheer you as we go!
Our honor defend we will fight to the end
for OHIO!

Sound clips can also be heard HERE

Also often used several times per game since 1968 is "Hang On Sloopy." The famous SCRIPT OHIO, done by the OSU Marching Band--The Best Damn Band in the Land--is done to "Le Regimente"

When I was at Columbia it was "Roar, Lion, Roar." I.e., plural big cats, not singular. But no one really knew the words to it.

Due to the household I grew up in, I knew the University of Texas fight song. We all had to stand up when it played, even on television.

The eyes of Texas are upon you
All the livelong day
The eyes of Texas are upon you
You cannot get away
Do not think you can escape them
From night 'til early in the morn
The eyes of Texas are upon you
'Til Gabriel blows his horn

Always found that kind of spooky, knowing those eyes were upon me. Even at very private times.

Subject: Lyr Add: MAINE STEIN SONG
From: GUEST,Q
Date: 20 Jan 03 - 11:06 PM

MAINE STEIN SONG
Words, Lincoln Colcord, 1905. Music, E. A Fenstad, 1901.
Fill the steins to dear old Maine
Shout 'til the rafters ring
Stand and drink a toast once again
Let every loyal Maine man sing
Drink to all the happy hours
Drink to the careless days
Drink to Maine our Alma Mater
The College of our hearts always.

To the trees, to the sky
To the Spring in its glorious happiness.
To the youth, to the fire
To the life that is moving and calling us.
To the Gods, to the Fates
To the rulers of men and their destinies.
To the lips, to the eyes
To the girls who will love us some day.

Fill the steins to dear old Maine
Shout 'til the rafters ring
Stand and drink a toast once again
Let every loyal Maine man sing
Drink to all the happy hours
Drink to the careless days
Drink to Maine our Alma Mater
The College of our hearts always.

Made popular by Rudy Vallee, singer-band leader and a graduate of Maine, the song, with its great tune, swept the country in the 1920s.

The Maine Stein song is, in my opinion, THE greatest college song of all time.   Any song that pledges allegiance to a college AND recognizes the importance of drinking in college has hit on all the key points.   Any other college song dims in comparison.

I only wish I went to Maine. Finest kind.

Stein Song (University of Maine): Music by E. A. Fenstad, lyrics by Lincoln Colcord, arrangement for Rudy Vallee by A. W. Sprague, 1910. Sheet music published by Carl Fischer, Inc.
This is the version we know best.

I would like to see the earliest. Anyone?

Thanks for the songs, gang.
Cornflake, the words I remember are,

Roar, Lions, Roar/
And wake the echos of the Hudson Valley/
Fight on to victory evermore/
While the sons of Knickerbocker rally/
'round Columbia, Columbia/
Shouting her name forever/
Roar, Lions, Roar/
For alma mater on the Hudson shore.

I, still, need the Amherst song. I love the Ohio State songs and I will surely learn the Maine Stein Song.
I seem to recall that little kids used to sing,

Cheer, cheer for old Notre Dame
You take the Notre, I'll take the dame.

musicmic, its good to know what the lyrics to my college fight song were, even if I'm learning them a few decades late.

Graham, I think people do still sing these at football games. I never went to any games in college and wouldn't know. I enjoy the songs people have posted. They're pleasant in an archaic way.

Yes Graham, we still sing that stuff. You really need to attend a college game here with a top 25 school providing you can get a ticket. Ohio Stadium filled with 110,000 people singing the Buckeye Battle Cry is not to be believed AND when they start the Hang On Sloopy thing the place is completely nuts. College fans are very loyal here and season tickets are handed down from generation to generation. If I want to go to an Ohio State game, a ticket can be had against a poor team for about $150.00. The Michigan game will cost you $500.00 or so. Our second year coach who just won the National Championship also reinstated an old Buckeye tradition, singing "Carmen Ohio" (the alma mater) after the game. The coach and team lead the singing and not a fan leaves the stands!

Spaw, I think that's cool. When I said these songs sounded archaic to me I didn't mean that negatively, more in the sense of good things that I thought were dwindling away. And congrats to your school on its championship.

What's this I read? Someone who thinks that football and the Univ. of Chicago are strangers to one another? Has he never heard of Amos Alonzo Stagg?
I am well aware of "Fight Fiercely, Harvard", which was on Tom Lehrer's first album. I also remember a cheer from highschool which we yelled when we got a bum call from the referee.

Elevator, elevator, we got the shaft!

That great old banjoist, Paul Cadwell, used to sing a Princeton fight song, but I cant recall a word of it. I can offer the Virginia drinking song (to the tune of Ramblin' Wreck From Georgia Tech)

From Vinegar Bend to Rugby Road we're gonna get drunk tonight,

The faculty's afraid of us, they know we're in the right.

So lift your cups and glasses, boys and drink to victory,

For as long as sex and liquor last, we'll drink to the U of V

Yeah musicmic, but Stagg's last year was '32, I think, and I was referring to the school's football program as it was reputed to be in the late '60s, when I learned both that cheer and the Lehrer song you asked we not suggest. The UC recruiting brochures took a similarly disrespectful line. Actually, Mike Healy was named an All-American this past season.

The point of the cheer was not so much to suggest that the University's students were too brainy/nerdy to play football, but that knowing one's classics and sciences needn't be an absolute bar to athleticism.

Gargoyle, does that Maine song have a melody?
Haruo, I live in Philadelphia and our "big time" football school is Temple whose students are so disspirited, they wouldn't sing a fight song if they had one. Maybe, we can write one for them. Ah, forget it. It's too depressing. The Univ. of Pennsylvania, on the other hand, has a couple of dandies.

Drink a highball at nightfall, be good fellows while ye may,

For tomorrow may bring sorrow, so, tonight, let's all be gay.

Tell a story of glory of Penn-syl-van-I-a

Drink a highball at nightfall, here's a health to Penn.

Subject: ADD: On, Brave Old Army Team
From: Joe Offer
Date: 23 Jan 03 - 06:27 AM

This site (click) has a recording of the West Point fight song. Same tune as "Up in the Air, Junior Birdmen."

On, Brave Old Army Team
Words and Music by: Philip Egner

The Army team's the pride and dream
Of every heart in gray.
The Army line you'll ever find
A terror in the fray.
And when the team is fighting
For the Black and Gray and Gold,
We're always near with song and cheer
And this is the tale we're told: *
The Army team

(Band or whistle accompaniment)

Rah! Rah! Rah! Boom!

Chorus:
On, brave old Army team!
On to the fray.
Fight on to victory
For that's the fearless Army way.

(Whistle chorus)
(Repeat chorus)

* And this is the thing we're told: (from the 1921 edition of West Point Songs and the 1910 Howitzer)
* To "sound off" strong and bold: (from the 1935 edition of West Point Songs)

From the liner notes of the West Point Music record album (courtesy Lew Higinbotham '62):
Drawing inspiration from valorous cadet football teams, Lieutenant Egner wrote On Brave Old Army Team in 1910. Legend tells us that he conceived the tune while walking home one day and jotted the notes on his stiffly starched cuff, lest he forget them. Since then, this has become the singing trademark of athletics at West Point and at U.S. Army installations throughout the world.

Well I was looking for lyrics to the other Big 10 schools and ran across this excellent site with the music for all the songs including the alma maters from each school as played by the marching bands from the schools. Great site if you like marching bands.

And here are the words to the main songs from the other Big 10 schools:

Illinois
"Oskee Wow-Wow"

Old Princeton yells her Tiger, Wisconsin her Varsity.
And they give the same old "rah-rah-rah" at each university.
But the yell that always thrills me and fills my heart with joy
is the good old "Oskee Wow-Wow" that they yell at Illinois.
Os-kee Wow-Wow, Illinois! Our eyes are all on you.
Oskee Wow-Wow, Illinois! Wave your orange and your blue. (Rah-rah!)
When the team trots out before you, every man stand up and yell.
Back the team to gain a victory--Oskee Wow-Wow, Illinois!

Indiana

"Indiana, Our Indiana"

Indiana, our Indiana! Indiana, we're all for you.
We will fight for the cream and crimson and the honor of old IU.
Never daunted, we shall not falter. In the battle, we're tried and true.
Indiana, our Indiana! Indiana, we're all for you! IU!

Iowa

"The Iowa Fight Song"

The word is "Fight, fight, fight for Iowa!" Let every loyal Iowan sing.
The word is "Fight, fight, fight for Iowa!"
until the walls and rafters ring (Go Hawks!).
Come on and cheer, cheer, cheer, for Iowa!
Come on and cheer until you hear the final gun.
The word is "Fight, fight, fight for Iowa!" until the game is won!

"On Iowa"

On Iowa proudly at the fore
On Iowa on for evermore
Ev'ry loyal son will give
A Rousing toast to you
Ev'ry loyal daughter loves you true
On Iowa with your wealth untold
A heritage to us you did unfold
Love of family, love of friend
Love of country too
Makes us proud for what you stand
Our Dear Old Gold.

Iowa! Iowa!
Iowa! Iowa!
I-O-W-A!

Fight, Iowa, never, never yield
Fight, Iowa, fight right down the field
Get in the game and watch the ball
Be a fighting Man
Hit 'er hard, give Iowa all you can.
Fight, Iowa, you'll be sure to hold
We're with you with the pep
And love of old.
Fight for family, Fight for friend
Fight for country too
But fight hard today and win
For Dear old Gold.

Michigan

"(Hail to) The Victors"

Now for a cheer they are here, triumphant!
Here they come with banners flying.
In stalwart step they're nighing,
with shouts of vict'ry crying!
We hurrah, hurrah, we greet you now, hail!
Far we their praises sing for the glory and fame they've brought us.
Loud let the bells them ring, for here they come with banners flying.
Far we their praises tell for the glory and fame they've brought us!
Loud let the bells them ring!
For here they come with banners flying--here they come, hurrah!
Hail to the victors valiant! Hail to the conqu'ring heroes!
Hail, hail to Michigan, the leaders and best!
Hail to the victors valiant! Hail to the conqu'ring heroes!
Hail, hail to Michigan, the champions of the West!
We cheer them again--we cheer and cheer again!
For Michigan, we cheer for Michigan!
We cheer with might and main.
We cheer, cheer, cheer--with might and main we cheer!
Hail to the victors valiant! Hail to the conqu'ring heroes!
Hail, hail to Michigan, the champions of the West!

Michigan State

The MSU Fight Song

On the banks of the Red Cedar is a school that's known to all.
Its specialty is winning, and those Spartans play good ball.
Spartan teams are never beaten!
All thru the game they fight, fight for the only colors, green and white!
Go right thru for MSU--watch the points keep growing!
Spartan teams are bound to win--they're fighting with a vim.
Rah-rah-rah! See, their team is weakening. We're going to win this game!
Fight, fight! Rah, team, fight! Victory for MSU!
Up with the colors, unfurl them on high (Fight!)!
Up with the colors, unfurl them on high (Rah!)!
Up with the colors, unfurl them on high! Rah, team, fight!
Go right thru for MSU--watch the points keep growing!
Spartan teams are bound to win--they're fighting with a vim.
Rah-rah-rah! See, their team is weakening. We're going to win this game!
Fight, fight! Rah, team, fight! Victory for MSU!

Minnesota

"Minnesota Rouser"

Minnesota, hats off to thee!
To thy colors true we shall ever be.
Firm and strong, united are we.
Rah! Rah! Rah! for Ski-U-Mah!
RAH! RAH! RAH! RAH!
Rah for the U of M!

Minnesota, hats off to thee!
To thy colors true we shall ever be.

M-I-N-N-E-S-O-T-A! Minnesota! Minnesota!
Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah Gophers!

Ohio State

"Fight the Team (Across the Field)"

Fight the team across the field! Show them Ohio's here.
Set the earth reverberating with a mighty cheer (Rah-rah-rah!).
Hit them hard and see how they fall. Never let that team get the ball!
Hail, hail--the gang's all here. Let's win that old conference now!
Go, Ohio! Go, Ohio! O-H-I-O!
Fight the team across the field--show them Ohio's here!
Set the earth reverberating with a mighty cheer (Rah-rah-rah!).
Hit them hard and see how they fall. Never let that team get the ball!
Hail, hail--the gang's all here. Let's win that old conference now!

"Buckeye Battle Cry"

In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land.
Eleven warriors brave and bold whose fame will ever stand.
And when the ball goes over, our cheers will reach the sky!
Ohio Field will hear again the Buckeye battle cry!
Drive, drive on down the field, men of the scarlet and gray.
Don't let them through that line. We've got to win this game today!
Come on, Ohio! Smash through to victory, we cheer you as you go.
Our honor defend we will fight to the end for Ohio!

Penn State

"Fight On, State!"

Fight on, State! Fight on, State!
Strike your gait and win.
Victory we predict for thee.
We're ever true to you, dear old white and blue!
Onward, State! Onward, State!
Roar, Lions, roar.
We'll hit that line, roll up the score,
Fight on to victory evermore.
Fight on, on,
On, on, on!
Fight on, on,
Penn State!

"Victory"

FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! for the Blue and White,
Victory will our Slogan be.
Dear Alma Mater, Fairest of all,
Thy loyal sons will obey thy call,
To FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! with all their might,
ever the goal to gain;
Into the game for Penn State's fame,
Fight on to vic'try (WE! ARE! PENN! STATE!) Fight on to victory!

Purdue

"Hail Purdue"

To your call, once more we rally! Alma mater, hear our praise!
Where the Wabash spreads its valley filled with joy our voices raise.
From the skies in swelling echoes come the cheers that tell the tale
of your vict'ries and your heroes. Hail Purdue! We sing "All hail!"
Hail, hail to old Purdue! All hail to our old gold and black!
Hail, hail to old Purdue! Our friendship may she never lack.
Ever grateful, ever true!
Thus we raise our song anew of the days we've spent with you.
All hail our own Purdue!

Wisconsin

"On, Wisconsin"

On, Wisconsin! On, Wisconsin! Plunge right through that line.
Run the ball clear down the field, boys--touchdown sure this time.
On, Wisconsin! On, Wisconsin! Fight on for her fame.
Fight, fellows--fight, fight, fight! We'll win this game!

On Wisconsin! On Wisconsin! stand up Badgers sing!
"Forward" is our driving spirit, loyal voices ring.
On Wisconsin! On Wisconsin! raise her glowing flame.
Stand, fellows, let us now salute her name.

I have to include the University of South Carolina fight song (although I hear that Coach Lou Holtz doesn't like it). Tune is, I believe, "Let a Winner Lead the Way"

Hey, let's give a cheer, Carolina is here,
The Fighting Gamecocks lead the way!
Who gives a d*** if the going is rough?
When it is tough,
That's when the    s get going.
Hail to our colors, the Garnet and Black,
In Carolina pride have we.
So go, Gamecocks, go! Drive for the goal!
USC will win today! (Go    s!)
Hey, let's give a cheer, Carolina is here,
The Fighting Gamecocks all the way!

Hey, Guest, I love that South Carolina song but, while I love euphomisms, I confess that I cant for the life of me figure out what the heck "d***" is supposed to stand for. Can you give us a hint?

Well Musicmic, I suppose the best thing would be for you to fly into Bangor and then head up river to the outskirts in Orono....however, hear is the next best

thing....http://www.ume.maine.edu/~PepBand/audio/formaine.mp3

I've never heard this tune to anything else.

All I know about Idaho is that it was in the old Pacific Coast Conference until 1959 or so. But California members rarely played them during my lifetime (to the best of my remembrance.) By the time the conference broke up, Idaho was usually playing 3 Washington or Oregon schools each season. When the conference reformed, Idaho was not part of it.
So how did BSU surpass Idaho? and Idaho State?

Upon closer examination, many of these alma maters can be quite stirring tunes without the lyrics, which often border on the ridiculous. Most were written in the age of purple prose and some are literally unsingable. All of that said, it is still interesting to look at them from a historical perspective.

Here is a hoary old pseudo fight song from the University of California at Berkeley (or "Berserkeley," as some characterize it):

(speaking start)
The steward went below. (Shhh!)
To light the captain's lamp. (Shhh!)
The lamp it would not light. (Why not?)
Because the wick was damp. (Oh!)
The captain went below. (Shhh!)
To kick the steward's... (Shhh!)
He said, "So fire it up you son-of-a-bitch,
The Golden Gate is passed!"

(singing start)

Oh, they had a little party down in Newport;
There was Harry, there was Mary, there was Grace.
Oh, they had a little party down in Newport,
And they had to carry Harry from the place.

Oh, they had to carry Harry to the ferry,
And the ferry carried Harry to the shore;
And the reason that they had to carry Harry to the ferry
Was that Harry couldn't carry any more.

For California, for California,
The hills send back the cry,
We're out to do or die,
For California, for California,
We'll win the game or know the reason why.

And when the game is over, we will buy a keg of booze,
And drink to California 'till we wobble in our shoes.

So drink, tra la la,
Drink, tra la la,
Drink, drank, drunk last night,
Drunk the night before;
Gonna get drunk tonight
Like I never got drunk before;
For when I'm drunk, I'm as happy as can be
For I am member of the Souse family.

Now the Souse family is the best family
That ever came over from old Germany.
There's the Highland Dutch, and the Lowland Dutch,
The Rotterdam Dutch, and the Irish.

Sing glorious, victorious,
One keg of beer for the four of us.
Sing glory be to God that there are no more of us,
For one of us could drink it all alone. Damn near.
Here's to the Irish, dead drunk. The lucky stiffs....

Wilmington College, Quaker college in Ohio had a rather un-Quaker fight song (but it didn't seem to do much good - we went 0-9 and 1-8 my first two years there:

Stand up and cheer boys,
A song for Wilmington;
Soon the foe we're meeting,
True to thee our hearts are beating;
We'll never fear boys,
We're loyal every one;
We'll win the game and laud the name
Of dear old Wilmington.

Better that that was the WVU fight song:

Fight, fight, fight, fight Mountaineers,
We're here to cheer for you,
Take that ball right down the field,
We're putting all our trust in you;
Play that team right off its feet,
We can't be beat, we know;
And when the game is through,
We'll all cheer you,
West Virginia, West Virginai, RAH!!

When I went to Caltech (1954-1958), it still had a football team, which won a game about every 4 years, so if you didn't flunk out, you'd probably see it happen once. So we had to have a song:

Oh, if I had a daughter, sir, I'd dress her up in green
And send her over to Oxy to coach the football team,
But if I had a son, sir, he'd go to Tech, it's true,
And he'd yell TO HELL WITH OXY! like his daddy used to do.

Oh, if you want the planets to revolve around the sun,
We'll do the job in half a year and only call it fun,
And if you want a trip to Mars or a 10-foot shaft to hell,
We're the engineers from CIT and we'll do the job real well.

(Oxy = Occidental College)

We also had a cheer,

e to the x dy dx
e to the x dx
secant cosine tangent sine
3.14159
integral derivative u dv
slipstick sliderule CIT!

My dad, who was raised in Beaumont, Texas and attended Lamar Tech(now University) in the early 1920's, used to chant an old "taunt" in the form of a fight song or cheer which was aimed at the Rice University (formerly Institute) folks over in Houston. From the tenor of the thing, one might get the impression that students at Rice had an exalted opinion of themselves back then:

    "Rooty toot toot!
    Rooty toot toot!
We're the boys from the Institute.
    We don't smoke,
    And we don't chew,
And we don't go with the girls that do!"

Fight Song

R-U, Rah, Rah,
R-U, Rah, Rah,
Whoo-Raa, Whoo-Raa;
Rutgers Rah
Up-Stream Red Team;
Red Team Up-Stream
Rah, Rah,
Rutgers Rah!!

Alma Mater

My father sent me to old Rutgers,
And resolv'd that I should be a man;
And so I settled down,
In that noisy college town,
On the banks of the old Raritan.
(Chorus)

Chorus...
On the banks of the old Raritan (my friends)
Where old Rutgers evermore shall stand,
For has she not stood
Since the time of the flood,
On the banks of the old Raritan.

Her ardent spirit stirred and cheered me
From the day me college years began;
Gracious Alma Mater mine;
Learning's fair and honored shrine;
On the banks of the old Raritan.
(Chorus)

I love her flaming far-flung banner
I love her triumphs proud to scan,
And I glory in her fame
That's immortalized her name.
On the banks of the old Raritan.
(Chorus)

My heart clings closer than the ivy
As life runs out its fleeting span,
To the stately, ancient walls
Of her hallowed, classic halls
On the banks of the old Raritan.
(Chorus)

Then sing aloud to Alma Mater;
And keep the Scarlet in the van;
For with her motto high
Rutgers' name shall never die,
On the banks of the old Raritan.
(Chorus
and

]

Nobody ever died for dear old Rutgers,
Nobody ever had a life to give
When you're clipped by someone in the rear
    You hear a mighty cheer,
But you're laid up for a year.
So nobody ever died for dear old Rutgers
Strangely enough they simply want to live
The alumni won't admit it's true, but
Nobody ever died for Rutgers U.

Rutgers, Rutgers, Rah, Rah, Rah, Rah, Rah, Rah, Rah, Rah

Nobody ever died for dear old Rutgers,
Giving away your life would be extreme
When the coach says smash the Princeton line,
    His reasoning is fine,
But it's no good for your spine,
So nobody ever died for dear old Rutgers
But there's a lot of valor on the team
You can get a little black and blue, but
Nobody ever died for Rutgers U.

I grew up not far from Rutgers, but I would never consider New Brunswick to be a "noisy college town."

I'd like to be the first to provide lyrics to my alma mater's famous fight song, the greatest of them all, but duty calls ~ gotta get to work immediately.

OK; I'm back now.

Rally sons of Notre Dame
Sing her glory and sound her fame,
Raise her Gold and Blue
And cheer with voices true:
Rah, rah, for Notre Dame
We will fight in every game,
Strong of heart and true to her name
We will ne'er forget her
And will cheer her ever
Loyal to Notre Dame

Cheer, cheer for old Notre Dame,
Wake up the echoes cheering her name,
Send a volley cheer on high,
Shake down the thunder from the sky.
What though the odds be great or small
Old Notre Dame will win over all,
While her loyal sons are marching
Onward to victory.

The melody for the first part, or verse, might not be quite as familiar to everyone as the veryu-well-known chorus.

And now, as a bonus, the Noter Dame Alma Mater:

Notre Dame, Our Mother (Alma Mater)

Notre Dame, our Mother
Tender, strong, and true
Proudly in thy heavens,
Gleams thy gold and blue.
Glory's mantle cloaks thee
Golden is they fame,
And our hearts forever,
Praise thee Notre Dame,
And our hearts forever,
Love thee Notre Dame.

Here's the University of Tennessee fight song. Most people think it's Rocky Top...even Tennessee fans...but it's not!

Fight Vols Fight

"Fight Vols fight with all your might,
for the Orange and the White!
Never falter, never yield,
as we march on down the field-
KEEP MAR-CHING!

Let the spirit of The Hill,
Every Vol with courage fill.
Our loyalty means a victory,
so Fight Vols Fight!
Go Big Orange....Go Big Orange....Go Big Orange!"

I think the official Harvard song is Ten Thousand Men of Harvard, but the fan favorite is (or was, when I was there) Illegitimi Non Carborundum, a bit of faux Latin generally translated as Don't Let the Bastards Grind You Down.

Some of the Australian pro rugby teams have fight songs that use the tunes, if not the lyrics, of American college fight songs.

The Eyes of Texas isn't the Texas fight song. It's actually the school song (alma mater). The first part of The Eyes of Texas is in the second verse of the Texas fight song which is named, appropriately enough, Texas Fight.

Texas fight, Texas fight, and it's goodbye to A&M!
Texas fight, Texas fight, and we'll put over one more win.
Texas fight, Texas fight, for it's Texas that we love best
Give 'em hell, give 'em hell, go Horns go and it's good-bye to all the rest!"

Yea orange! Yea white! Yea Longhorns! Fight! Fight! Fight!
Texas fight! Texas fight, yea Texas fight!
Texas fight! Texas fight, yea Texas fight!"

The eyes of Texas are upon you, all the livelong day.
The eyes of Texas are upon you, you cannot get away.
Texas fight, Texas fight, for it's Texas that we love best
Give 'em hell, give 'em hell, go Horns go and it's good-bye to all the rest

The Cardinal is waving
Out over the field.
Our team is fighting
with a spirit that will not yield.
[Rah. Rah. Rah]
Farewell Old Berkeley.
We're after you.
And once again the Cardinal
Will whip the Gold and Blue.

I went to grad school at Cornell in the 1970s. Cornell's fight song was about the lamest imaginable. It was called "Give My Regards to Davey", sung to the tune of "Give My Regards to Broadway".

I take the word of several posters that Columbia has a fight song called "Roar, Lion, Roar", but I recall that during sports contests the Columbia band would often play a song called "Who Owns New York?"

The Colorado School of Mines song goes back to 1876. A song so awesome that Georgia Tech could not help but borrow it. It is agreed they got it from CSM. (To the tune of "The Son of a Gambolier")

THE MINING ENGINEER

I wish I had a barrel of rum and sugar three hundred pounds,
The college bell to mix it in and a clapper to stir it 'round.
Like every honest fellow, I take my whiskey clear,
I'm a ramblin' wreck from Golden Tech, a helluva engineer.

Hail, hail, the gang's all here.
What the hell do we care as long as we get our share.
Hail, hail, the gang's all here.
M - I - N - E - S !
What the hell do we care now?

Go Mines!

Celebrating (2014) 100 years of tradition and a recent proud winner in "The Blue Lake Asperagis Festival, the "Marching Lumberjacks" of HSU are one of the unique "scatter bands" in the western USA.

(To the tune of "On Wisconsin")

"Drive on, Humboldt!"

Drive on Humboldt, on down the field;
Drive on Humboldt, we'll never yield!
Tackle 'em, Sock 'em, Back Field, Rock 'em
We are on the make! Rah Rah Rah!
We must have a victory;
for the green and gold!
So FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT and WIN,
For Humboldt State!

Sincerely,

(The third line is also ... Rock 'em, Sock 'em, Back Field, Knock 'em)

Columbia's main fight song is "Roar, Lion, Roar" (singular, not plural, one lion, not many): http://www.wikicu.com/School_songs#Roar.2C_Lion.2C_Roar . It dates to 1923.

"Who Owns New York?" (originally "We Are the Stuff") is considerably older: http://www.wikicu.com/School_songs#Who_Owns_New_York.3F

From: GUEST,Roar, Lion, Roar SINGULAR

There's only one lion in the song title and lyric. In recent years, some Columbia students have been singing it wrong. The Dean of Columbia College has taken to ending his public correspondence with "Roar, Lion(s), Roar" (using parentheses). Maybe that's his way of acknowledging a possible shift, or maybe it's just his way of making clear that he is addressing all Columbia students and alumni, not a singular icon. But the song as written, and as sung for many decades, is about a single king of the jungle.

The incorrect titles above have been fixed.
