Just refreshing my request for Paul Simon TAB or CHORDS of new song "Father & Daughter."

The song appears on the "Wild Thornberrys" movie soundtrack.

Thanks.

Matthias

Mathias, I found the song and lyrics at www.paulsimon.com, and worked it out for the most part. But I've never tabbed anything, just little additions and notes to other's tabs, because 1. I don't use tab a lot except for quick reference for chords, and 2. I'm a parasitic non-productive member of society.

But I'll try to be helpful just this once, if I can.

The main riff starts fret 9, on high e, and simply ladder-skips down the c#minor pent. scale, walks back up, to g# (2nd string fret 9). Second time it lands on e, 3rd string, 9 fret. Let me know if it's hard to find the notes there, I'll try to be more specific. Also, I'm on an acoustic with none of the effects, and find it helps to get that sound if I touch off my low e-string, let it ring softly during the riff, or thrown in at the end.

The chords. C#m/7--I hear the 7th coming and going in the chord strum. I do it at the fourth fret, the am/7 form, so I can easily drop in the low e at the end of the chorus.

so--C#m/7          A                B               C#m/7
if you leap awake in the mirror of a bad dream

--c#m/7    Fm7                      A                      c#m/7
and for a fraction of a second you can't remember where you are

then repeat those with the next two lines, same thing next verse.
At the end of the second verse there's a little double stop riff, b/e, c#/f#, e/g#, e/g#-a (hammer or slide), e/g#, c#/f#. let me know if frets would be better. There's a little bit of fill when c#m goes to E, which I do in the same place by making the am form a c-form. The fill is in there on the second, pull-off third, and 4th strings of the c#m and E chords, where it sounds like he's about to launch into George Harrison's riff in Mother Nature's Son.

   E                        A
       I'm gonna watch you shine

                        E       A    E    A    E
gonna watch you grow... sign, know, one, two

    ...E                      A                B
...there could never be a father loved his daughter more than I

c#m/e (here I think let the low e ring with c#m/7)
    love you

One other thing is that the verse chords reverse on the
"Trust your intuition" verse variation, so it's

Cm/7, f#m7, A, Cm7, then

...cm/7, A,             B    C#m/7
      ...waste your time       worryin'

   hope that helps. Fred

Matthias, a couple of things might be useful if you want to do it solo. Instead of dropping down to the 4th fret after the opening riffs, it's smooth to do c#m7 with two fingers using open strings--the A string at 11th fret, mute the d-string, and g-string at the 9th. Then toss in the b-string at 12 for the 7th note.

And I'm doing a bass run version of that 2-string riff, which sounds stilted to do solo. At the c#m chord on 4th fret, add A-string 7th fret, walk up 4th string 4 frt, 4ths 6th frt, 4th string 7th fret, walk back down those notes. (E,f#, g#, A,A, g#, f#, E)I do them more an evenly thumping rythm while holding the chord-shape instead of the plucked riff, but its basically the fill notes. Then I drop to do the 1rst position e chord with a pinky pull-off from 2nd string 2nd fret for the passing bit that sounds like Mother Nature's son. This seems to get the dynamics better, as it gets louder and fuller going into the chorus.                            fred

Fred,

Thanks very much indeed for the effort and the chords. I'm going to try this out as soon as possible. I'm a sort of intermediate guitarist, but with practice I think I can make this one sound pretty good.

It's funny that should mention "Mother Nature's Son" because that's also a song I've been working on learning fairly recently (also from a tab).

My long-term goal is to play by ear more and to learn the scales. I hope your daughter enjoys your version of the song.

Matthias

P.S. Thanks for looking Sorcha.

Cool. Maybe I can pay some of my debt to internet tab society this way.
That opening riff I guess I could write this way--string#/fret#.

So it goes 1/9 2/12-(pull off)-2/9 3/11
             2/9 3/11-po-3/9 4/11
             3/9 4/11-po-4/9 5/11
             4/9 4/11 3/9 3/11 (here I touch 6/0) 2/9

second time instead of ending 2/9, it's 3/9. And I think he double-stops some so the notes ring longer. And I like to end on a double or triple so it's fuller, I can vibrate it, like (9/4) 9/3 9/2 to end the first time, then start to suggest the drums lightly strumming 6/0 5/11, palm muted. I try to fill in stuff like that to do band songs solo.

I don't know mother nature's son, just hear that smidge of it. But if turns out any of this is helpful, I'll watch for any other stuff I may know.
And I think people who post say that "this represents the author's work, intended for private study purposes", I suppose I say that? If so, I do, of course.

It was actually the Oscars.

A video copy of Paul Simon playing Father and Daughter at the Oscars can be found at the following link. Be careful, it's 38 MBytes!

I suppose he may do the c# minor7 with the A-form there, but you know, it sounds pretty cool up high, with the low E. I'll have to check out the link when I have more time. Thanks!
