Subject: Lyr Req: Need help identifying a song
From: GUEST
Date: 20 Jan 03 - 04:35 PM

Hey all,

I figure this is the best place to ask for help. My Mom is trying to find a song that she used to listen to when she was younger. She thinks it is called 'Girl In The Tavern' but isn't sure. She's also not sure if it is actually a Newfoundland song, or just something she might have heard on the radio. She's given me the following lyrics to work with, but I haven't come up with anything yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One night as I sat in a tavern
And drank while the wine flowed so free
A girl came and stood in the doorway
She was a picture of beauty to see
I went and placed a hand on her shoulder
And asked if she liked to sit down
She said "I'm just here for my husband
I've looked for him all over town
Since he's not here I'll be leaving
But thank you kind sir just the same
It seems that he's out with another
And it looks like he cheated again"
As she turned and walked out of the doorway
I thought what a fool he must be
To be out sleeping around with another
When he had one so true as I could

I have heard a very similiar song at bluegrass festivals, although I think it was more of a "honky-tonk" song. Did you try Cowpie?

Your mom was right; the song is called "A GIRL IN A TAVERN." I don't think it is a Newfoundland song. I also remember hearing it when I was growing up. God bless.

One night as I sat in a tavern,
And drank while the wine flowed so free,
A girl came and stood in the doorway.
She was a picture of beauty to see.

Her face was the image of heaven,
Her eyes like the stars up above.
I could tell by the way she was smiling
That her heart was made only for love.

I went laid my hand on her shoulder,
And asked if she'd like to sit down.
She said, "I'm just here for my husband.
I've looked for him all over town.

"But since he's not here, I'll be leaving,
But I thank you, kind sir, just the same.
It seems that he's out with another,
And it looks like he's cheated again."

As she turned and walked out of the doorway,
I thought what a fool he must be,
To be slipping around with another,
When he had one so true I can see.

I thought I had learned a great lesson,
So I drank up and then went straight home,
For I loved the girl that I married,
And from her I never will roam.
