From: GUEST,Arnie

Hello all!
The 3rd Annual Banjo Special Concert is taking place. Here are the details:

A special concert at the Flying Cloud Folk Club
"The Banjo Special"
A CD Release
featuring Chris Coole, Arnie Naiman, Brian Taheny & Chris Quinn
Saturday, February 1, 2003 - 8:00 pm
at the TRANZAC - 292 Brunswick Ave, Toronto
$14 general, $12 members (Cloud, Mariposa & Tranzac)
Adv. Res - 416 410 FOLK or flying_cloud_folk@sympatico.ca

The Banjo Special brings together three different styles from four of Canada's top banjo players. Through two previous recordings, Chris Coole and Arnie Naiman have established themselves as two very fine clawhammer players that fit not only within the traditional genre, but continue to compose new music for the banjo as well. Their playing styles are both complimentary to each other and yet individually unique. Brian Taheny, from Sligo, Ireland, is a tenor banjo player whose flurries of triplets, blue notes and rhythmic twists are technically demanding on the player and captivating to the listener. Picking with the drive of a piston, bluegrass banjo player Chris Quinn is schooled in the traditions of the style and yet, is willing to step outside the boundaries of expectation. On The Banjo Special, the listener will find some music that is familiar and some that is unexpected. Coole, Naiman, Taheny and Quinn clearly show that the banjo is being played with range, repertoire and soul.

We'll be popping in on Rick Fielding's radio show this coming Monday. We hope to see some of you soon!
Arnie

I can't say enough good stuff about Chris Coole and Arnie Naiman! I have one of their albums and I never tire of it! It plays at my house nearly every day. People who used to think they weren't banjo enthusiasts change their mind after hearing this record.

If I could be there for the Feb 1 show, I would. All the best for a full house and great show!

I'm sure going to try to make this one. I have heard Chris Quinn a number of times and he is one heck of a picker. I still haven't heard Arnie & Chris together, but have heard nothing but rave reviews. I've only recently started realize that I like Clawhammer from the few Clawhammer tunes that I have on some Ralph Stanley CD's. My Dublin born & raised grandfather played the tenor and taught it to his sons, so I know that I would enjoy hearing Brian. I am flying to Texas on business the next day though so I'm not sure that I will be there. Definitely looking forward to hearing Rick's show on Monday though.

Say hello to Rick and Heather for me! I'll try to log on and listen to the show on-line, but I've not had much luck doing that over dial-up.

We used to have a bloke come to our folk session who played banjo. Kit Gregory was his name. Good player he was! Anybody out there in banjo land know him?

I know Arnie. I'll admit it.

(And I'm really looking forward to the night at the Tranzac. Jeff Goodes played "On the Way to Somewhere" on CBC this morning, just to whet the appetite.)

I just found out I won't be able to listen to Rick's show tonight, I had something come up yesterday. I hope to have someone tape it for me though. Wow four banjos on one show. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Rick brought a few along and played a couple of tunes.

Looks as though it might not until the show starts, Jed? I don't know. I found it by accident last week. Here is the whole addy: http://www.startcast.com/clients/ciutlive/ciut.ram

I backed that up to just startcast.com and didn't see any "current webcasts" so maybe it is kaput.

Sorry...

Well, if ya go here and click the "listen" button to the top and right of the screen, I think you'll get the Acoustic Workshop show!

But I think it's first come first serve, and they only open so many threads before they run out - so get there early and don;t let go. You might losoe your spot!

As ususal, Rick was a perfect host (except for perhaps accidentally using an f word). I've always known him to be a booster of genuine traditional folk music and to the people who play, it especially in the Toronto area.   Thank goodness for people like him who bring an awareness of this music to the public and give us some credibility to the kind of music we love. Thanks Rick.

I listened to the tape on the way in to work. I guess I'm about three quarters of the way through. I have heard one track from each guest. Amazing stuff.

I think that Chris Coole said it best when he was talking about what a great instrument it is. Four different players, four different styles, but the constant is just how wonderful a well played banjo sounds. I especially liked Chris Quinn's "Cold Tea" and Chris Coole's fretless banjo track. Unfortunately, (or fortunately, depending who you speak to)having heard these guys I burned my banjo.

And oh yeah, Amen Arnie. I try to listen to Rick's show every week. It's one of the few places that you can hear authentic music. He constantly amazes me with his depth of knowledege of all kinds of music. And he keeps the show loose and fun, I liken it to an on air kitchen party. He sure is supportive of local artists.

Two weeks in a row now Rick's said the F-word. I'm keeping track.
I tuned in a little late and came in in the middle of the theme tune. Thought "Geeez - that was a boo-boo!" Then I found out he was doing it live. Now, it's possible he did the boo-boo on purpose just to prove he was playing live, I dunno. Other than that very minor thing, the tune sounded great, due in part to the most excellent engineer. All o' y'all sounded great. (Gotta try the Ace and Deuce of Piping on guitar.) I also enjoyed hearing the unfretted banjo. I've played other people's a little bit and I really like that plunky, gentle sound.

There are some nights when you wish the show were a couple of hours long.

No, no, it was tape, not live. He had the whole bunch of top banjo guys in his studio, and NOT ONE DAMN BANJO IN THE PLACE!? Bizarre, but there you go. Amazing record ("The Banjo Special"), including beautiful fretless banjo piece. The tenor banjo stuff blew me away -- how the hell does that guy (Brian) do that? yours, Peter T.

Holy cow Jeri....two weeks in a row!!??

I've gotta be more careful with the "F" word. Back when the show was on late at night, it didn't matter if the occasional expletive deleted got said....but now we're on too early for that kind of thing!! Child banjoists may be listening!

T'was a fun show...glad the Real Audio was up.

Cheers

Rick

It really was a wonderful show, some of the best Irish banjo music I've heard, and a truly fine interview. Tell Brian he needs to plan a trip to Californee to do some pickin' out here...

Sure hate that we can't be there to hear the show, and I'm also sorry to miss Rick & Grit on stage at Windsor next month. You Canadians have all the fun.
