Subject: MEXICO From: Mugwump Date: 24 Jan 03 - 07:59 PM I just love the sound of this word MEXICO ...MEH - HI - CO!!! Lovely Jubbely! (That sound quie good too!) CA |
Subject: RE: MEXICO From: Amos Date: 24 Jan 03 - 08:02 PM Well, CA, I dunno what Jubbely is, but the reality of Mexico, while quite mixed by North American standards, is also a wonderful experience and full of rich sounds. I have a tape of them from my year in a small village outside Guadalajara -- thunder and tree-birds and the sound of gauchos riding over cobblestones and the whistle of a scissors-sharpener who announced his arrival by blowing on a little bosn's pipe, and dozens of others. Very rich and evocative. A |

Mexicans, at the cry of battle Prepare your swords and bridle; And let the earth tremble at its center At the roar of the cannon. ------------- But should a foreign enemy dare To Profane your land with his sole, Think, beloved fatherland, that Heaven Gave you a soldier in each son. |

Subject: RE: MEXICO From: GUEST,Q Date: 25 Jan 03 - 01:38 PM Gringo is an 18th century Spanish term for a foreigner and was used in much of Latin America. Nothing to do with rushes, Irish or the Mexican War. See threads on Santa Ana, etc. where documentation is given. |

Subject: RE: MEXICO From: Amos Date: 01 Feb 03 - 01:20 AM The musical overtones are well deserved -- the cult de mariachi is deeply ingrained. A |
Subject: RE: MEXICO From: GUEST,Q Date: 01 Feb 03 - 01:30 PM Of an evening, go to the big square in Mexico City. In one part, folk singers, mariachis and other musicians gather, hoping to be hired. Some old timers- lots of songs of all types plus harp players and other musicians. You can hear a lot for a few pesos. |
