I have never used a chat room until last night, well it was all a bit confusing, do you reply only to the person who answers you or is it ok to reply to a conversation between other Mudcatters. Some advice from you regular users would be appreciated.

Jump in, and sooner or later you'll get swept up in a conversation, following the threads involved in what yer talking about, and ignoring or just skimming the stuff that doesn't...

Takes a little practice, but you'll get it, I'm sure...

It helps to start with the name of the person who's comment you are replying to .....otherwise your comment can get lost in a myriad of postings.

there is a way to reply personally to just one member
and if a messae comes to you in blue text this means that someone
is taling to just you--you can go to the drop down menu
on the right and single out a member to chat with.
then you hagve to remember to re0click the all room feature
whe you want to tak with everyone again...yes,
sometimes it is a ty9ing challenge.
and some typos are intetional..you will find they
have lots of 9's in Hull for example.
It is incredible to be able to be communicationg
with people who are both seieng the sun rise and
set at the saem time. Even more mnd boggling is
Pal Talk where you can sing and play and listen
to everyon in the room--from all around the globe.
So far members of both services seem to be restricted
to planet earth...so far...

HI, RC...I guess I qualify as a regular, so here's my take on it. It can be pretty hard to sort out, especially when some of the gang starts talking about their last visit together in the flesh and you don't have the references. I have no modesty or shame, so I respond to anything I'm interested in, but that's certainly not required. Many people won't talk to you if you don't jump in, because a name on the participants list doesn't really mean that person's actually there...he/she can be off elsewhere on the net (or at home) and just peeking in once in a while.

You'll find, with more exposure, that it becomes easier to track the discussions. As Nutty says, prefacing a comment with the intended addressee can be a good idea, but don't expect everyone to do that. Also, people in the Chat become very familiar very fast, so don't be startled if you get comments that you would hesitate to make to your best friend.

Hi RC
Pushkin and I met you in chat last night, she too is a beginer and feels slightly daunted, but as you will have seen she was soon in the thick of it.
I on the other hand am of a shy and retiring nature and am usualy very quiet and well behaved.
Whatever you do, DO NOT ASK John from Hull about Bloody Hamsters!!!
Hope to talk to you soon

typo=typographical error, JohN, which your keyboard is an expert at. Others are suggesting that Hullites insert extra typos deliberately as a point of style, much as e.e.cummings didn't.

Where Hull keybords lead, the world follows...

Rock chick, it is of course fine to join in with any conversation in the chat room, once you've found out what's going on (if it's possible to deduce!) as anything that's private will be kept in blue whispers, as explained above.

If you're finding it difficult to follow, just say and someone will try to explain...!

Ettyket? We don't want no damn ettyket in here. Just type what passes through your brain at the time - once in a while, something makes sense. And what's the point of having friends if you can't insult each other? Don't worry about JoHn - his computer has a BKS fault (Between Keyboard & Seat) - the rest of us are mostly harmless. Come on in - the water's lovely.

maybe this

and this are how keyboards are set up in Hull?

(actually, this was a solution for a person with serious physical problems, but one does wonder)

As has been said just jump in the water is not deep. We have fun in there sometimes we can be serious but usually just daft.
It can take some getting used to but persevere and you will soon become adept at sorting the messages into some sense ( if there is any sense to be found that is) and then you can truly join in with confidence.
Some of us in there actually know each other in the flesh so to speak but we will happilly insult both those we know and those we don't.You can often meet other catters at festivals around the country many of us have badges with our names on, if you are there and see a badge talk to the person that way you will soon know hundreds more people.
See you in the chatroom soon and again
Col

I had a couple of sessions in the Mudchat and needed councilling and a lie down afterwards. Vallium and alcohol helped for the first two days after. The quantum leaps from subject to subject wern't too bad after one had got accustomed to them , but the failure to understand whole hours at a time while everyone else seemed to know what it was all about left me with inferiority complexity and a migrane.

But that's the thing I like the best about it... like a pub conversation where half the clientele are pissed and the other half pissed off, you can bounce into almost any subject you have an opinion on (and bounce right back out if the door is in one of its moods), and NO-ONE CAN TELL YOU TO SHUT UP OR SHOUT OVER YOU!!!

It's great for depressive, organisational attention seeking insomniacs like myself who either need someone to listen to them, someone to give advice/instructions to or receive a hug (virtual hugs are just as good as 'practical' hugs) and be told they're doing OK at all hours of the day or night.

You will notice that the gentleman above has knobbly elbows, which are to be avoided when there are more than 10 people in the room.
Personally, my elbows are perfectly rounded at all times.
(((((RC)))))

It is nice to say you are leaving before you log off, otherwise we will think you've been *bounced* and expect you back soon, or that all will be likewise *doored* at any minute.

Also, never discuss the weather with a room full of bastards who are enjoying a heatwave, when you are up to your neck in snow. It will only make you feel bad, and those blighters feel smug!!!!!

I don't feel smug in the heat at all, actually. It's too hot here!!

Could you send us some of that cool stuff?

Haven't ventured into the chatroom yet. I might get up the courage soon though. Gotta go out now though.

Expect that sometimes IT WON'T LET YOU IN!!!! or it will throw you out without any explanation.

In fact sometimes it tells you that it can't be displayed or you are already there when you know it can be and you aren't!!!!!

I'd not really been in any chatrooms before Mudcaat, but be warned - it can become addictive :-))))
