This little beauty showed up in my mailbox at just the right time. The good news is that it is just as wonderful when you are off pain-killers as when you are on them! (kidding)

I agree with everyone else on this thread, and just wanted to add a few things. Every few months (if I'm lucky) I come across a cd that is all-around perfect. Okay, maybe not perfect in the conventional sense, but it is cohesive and somehow 'right' from beginning to end. Jed's "Fall River" and Guy Wolff's "Out & About" are two recent ones like that. You listen from track to track and think "Well, of course..." Anyhow, the cd invariably ends up being hauled around from car to work to home and everyone in earshot gets an aural whiff of it.

Which brings me to a compliment I'd like to pass along...
I'm in the process of getting my bathroom remodeled and the house is continually full of folk. I was staying out of the way and quietly listening to this cd when the guy that was doing the plumbing came in and asked what I was listening to, and finally would I turn it up so they could all hear! Then he pauses for a minute and says "Ya know, such-n-such (some female singer I can't remember) sounds a lot like her..." and for about a half-hour, the guys who were SUPPOSED to be plumbing and tiling my bathroom are debating your merits. Janis Joplin isn't as smooth as you are, Mary Chapin Carpenter isn't as gritty, and LynnAnne Hyde doesn't have your range.....

Meanwhile, I'm brushing my teeth in the kitchen sink...

Mine came the other day and I have listened to it over and over. As you can discern from my previous post, unless you're an idiot, I was previously kind of "enchanted" by Susan's voice and playing. Okay, well, nothing has changed. The girl is really fabulous and her songs are exceptional.

But I got to thinking as I listened that I am sure as sure can be about something else. Susan, I bet you've had people either tell you or indicate in some way that they wish your voice or sound was (insert polite qualifier here). Oh they really did like you but it's not exactly their (whatever=favorite type of music or other irrelevant crap). DO NOT try to adapt your sound or music to any of their suggestions. I got a theory about really fine singers and it goes like this:

Take someone with an excellent voice which lacks distinction and they are generally admired by all, but rarely make it to the top of the heap. Find an outstanding artist with something very distinctive about them and you get a huge group of lovers and fans, but also a group of naysayers. The naysayers say things like, "It's a good voice but he/she really would appeal a lot more if they would (whatever)." I have found that the sounds that appeal to many the most will trigger some kind of reaction and I'm never sure why. I guess distinction doesn't count in their mind. Billie Holliday was just another good voice to them that needed more balance between registers.

Well, I guess that ain't makin' much sense probably............... I hope it does. There is a lot of "you" in your voice; don't lose it! I think everyone needs to hear this CD and to hear the distinct sound of Susan Latimer. You sound terrific and I wish you great success. You already seem to have overcome the handicap of having an asshole for a brother so the sky's the limit!

When I get a new CD, I like to listen to it, over and over; get to recognise and know the songs on it, etc.

I've had Susan's CD and the five CD Mudcat set for about the same time now and I have to say they get rotated evenly. Susan's just keeps growing on me; I am starting to sing along, learning the words and tunes and I love them more and more each time.

Thanks, again, Susan. To the rest of you, if you don't have this CD, you owe it to yourselves to get it and hear the works of this fine singer/songwriter.

Well, I guess I've waited long enough to respond to this one (and Steve's PM to me as well). I kinda' hate to jump right in at the beginning in this case because I have thought for several years that Susan Latimer is just great!!! I used to bug Steve about hearing more and all.....Let me explain.......

I first heard Susan on Rick's show several years ago. At the time I was on a dialup connection and as many recall, my phone lines in this village were actually installed by Alexander Graham Bell. I could never hear anything but snippets at times and the night I heard Susan was one of those really bad nights. At most I heard about 8 bars at a stretch and probably less than 64 overall, but I was immediately taken with her voice and her playing as well. At the time I couldn't even get enough of the show to find out who it was. Eventually I found out it was Susan. From that point on, Steve was good enough to keep me informed and send me clips of her.

Susan, you are a seriously gifted performer. You have a distinctive quality to your voice that I just love and it's tough to say anything beyond, "Sweet Jumpin' Jesus, this kid is GREAT!!!" I hope that others will find the same and put you on some shows like Ron's. A little playtime there would do wonders I'm sure. I will be getting the CD soon, it's at the top of my list. Whatever compliments you get here are well deserved and no more than you have earned. A beautiful job on the CD clips and I look forward to hearing the whole thing.

I received my copy of Susan's new CD just before Christmas and it has become one of my favorite CDs. I could go on about her Janis Joplin like voice, her mastery of the slide guitar, that little lilt she has in her finger-style guitar playing or the fact that she wrote all the tunes on her CD!...but I won't. I'll just say.

Like everyone else who has heard Susan's new CD I have a rotating favourite song. Some days it's the guitar lines of "Whatever" bouncing through my head and other days the lyrics of "Grey Matters" won't leave me alone. Today my favourite is "Hound Dog Hannah".

As one of Susan's biggest fans I am completely thrilled that her new CD is such a professional and quality recording. The CD has managed to capture not only the wonder of her lyrics but the spirit of her voice and overall sound. She blends voice and lyrics like no one else I have heard and each time I hear her perform, the soulfulness of her music affects me.

My nephew is in exactly the same situation...his website is landonpigg.com You may want to search out agent/managerial types who've got touring clients in need of an opening act. Try to schedule a showcase in Nashville. There's a club called 12th and Porter and the Exit/In which take and review unsolicited material. Oh yeah, the Bluebird Cafe has a process(and a website)by which you can submit material for a gig possibility. By the look of your CD it's obvious you're the real deal. Nashville is a good place because it's small, relatively inexpensive and an 'industry town' Get a list of call letters for all the 'NPR type' radio stations east of the Mississippi and tour! There's a club in Pittsburgh called 'the Club Cafe'. It's a very good showcase type club with great sound. Good Luck!

Nah, nah., na, na, na...I've got the seedeee!! Oh, it's wonderful! Congratulations, Susan! Now I know why Rick Fielding sings your praises so much. Wow, woman! I was just telling Steve, it's hard for me to pick a fav. of your songs because I really like them all, but I think if I had to The ghosts are out would be it, followed by Whatever, then of course, I'd have to include the title cut Gray Matters, and, and...the rest of them, because they are all so well-written, sung, and played.

It sometimes take me a few times listening to get into stuff. I listened to this cd about 7 times yesterday and went to bed humming some of the tunes. That's a GOOD sign...memorable tunes!

Folks, if you like a little bluesy sound mixed with some strong yet lyrical guitar pickin' mixed in with a voice that can go from a hint of a whisper to that edge of just cutting loose you can't miss with Susan's CD. It's not all bluesy, though. And, the lyrics! Fast talking, smooth sliding, intelligent, funny, poignant, ironic...ya know there's something about Canadian women singer/songwriters, I think. While Susan has her own distinctive sound I would place her in my same favourites category that includes Ferron and Holly Near, though I don't think Holly is from Canada. She's got that same kind of strength and confidence which comes through, in your face or beside you, and then burrows right into your heart.

Susan, I worked for over twenty years at promoting my brother's classical symphonic music and songs. It is tough, I know. And, I know I don't really rate as any kind of known reviewer in this genre, (except I have attained geek status according to your big brother, which I am VERY proud of!) but you are welcome to use any of my words in your PR stuff if you think they might help. I do consider myself a well-trained classical music person, piano and violin, and I do have a good ear for all music. I've also got some suggestions which I will get sent to you by PM about promoting. In the meantime, I second the suggestion of contacting Ron Olesko and any other dj's you might know.

The music might reach my ears first, but then I listen with my heart and I know your music was written from your heart and your first CD is something you should be very proud of. Thanks so much for sharing it with me.
