Over the Christmas here in the UK we had a celebrity fight between two well known celebrities...I've read that the idea grew from the latest fad for yuppie boxing matches in which well heeled blokes fight over well heeled blokes in the boxing ring in front of other well to do types who come to watch the fights and have dinner....it all sounds a lot of fun (if you can afford it ha ha)....I wonder if US television has been staging celebrity boxing matches like the BBC are now proposing to do as a series....You might enjoy a peek at a memorial to a bare knuckle boxer from another time lies in an old churchyard here in London....heres the link to the photo..

It's often done here as a sideshow to a hockey game. Every so often they try to do away with it because it's seen as so much brutality, though it may have more to do with attracting an American audience or advertisers or something. Anyway, on skates the bouts don't last very long.

Here they pay the homeless to batter each other! (A film crew was just arrested for it last month.) I've heard them called "Bum Fights," which has a whole different meaning here than your side of the pond. :)

I suspect (admittedly cynically) that the main reason they switched to gloved fists is that a bare knuckle fight tends not to last long enough to give the fans their money's worth. What they should do, I think, is go back to bare fists but allow the antagonists, at a strategic moment, to pick up a club or a shovel or an iron bar and bring the contest into a new dimension!

Before I get accused of all kinds of new age, pc thinking, I have to admit I grew up in a boxing family, boxed my brothers from age 7-12 or so, and have always enjoyed the quick reflexes it takes.

Of course you know Jim Clark.. Ebbie.......I didnt actualy get to see the Ricky Gervais vs Grant Bovey fight over the Christmas,but it just struck me as a fascinatingly "flying in the face of political correctness" idea,in a time when a professional boxers only got to get a scratched nose for all and sundry to demand the sports abolition...It also struck me as sounding like a lot more fun than watching the mono-sylabic goons who currently occupy the worlds boxing stage....in a sport where great personality seems something we can only find in its past....

John L. Sullivan, the Boston strong boy, went 75 rounds with Jake Kilrain. That must have taken a while.
Sullivan held the world title for 10 years with his bare fists; and, only Joe Louis and Larry Holmes came close, and they wore gloves.

Sullivan lost to the Cape Breton doctor.

Yes, here in the U.S. a cable TV channel has shown a few celebrity boxing matches: Barry Williams (from "The Brady Bunch") vs Danny Bonaduce (from "The Partridge Family"), Paula Jones vs Tina Harding (former Olympic skater - is Tina her first name? I can't recall for sure).
As Kendall noted, bareknuckle matches could be marathons, some going 100-plus rounds. Those weren't necessarily as long as today's 3-minute rounds. In the bareknuckle era a round ended when a fighter was knocked down.

Andy Bowen fought Jack Burke in New Orleans in 1893.
The contest ended as a draw after 7 hours and 19 minutes - 110 rounds.

In June 1952 Sugar Ray Robinson fought Joey Maxim for the light-heavyweight championship; he was unable to come out for the 14th, although well ahead on points. But he did last longer than the referee who had to be replaced when he left the ring in a state of exhaustion at the end of round 10. The outside temperature that night was 104F(40C) and Robinson lost approximately 16lbs during the course of the fight.
