Subject: RE: Musical Nigerian Scam-Or for real? From: Amos Date: 27 Jan 03 - 03:26 PM Fancy beggar? I dunno. Unless he's offering to send you samples of his music it's on a par with those cardboard signs held up by professional veterans at traffic lights. Depends on how charitable you are able to feel, I guess. I think SOrcha's right! A |

Subject: RE: Musical Nigerian Scam-Or for real? From: GUEST,Fossil - away from home Date: 28 Jan 03 - 06:33 AM No. don't invite him, please. (a) If it's a scam you will be wasting your time (b) if it's real, you are likely to end up in all kinds of bureaucratic situations as the poor guy tries to enlist your support to get a travel visa and/or air tickets and/or an address to travel to. I have been in this situation trying to organise a scientific conference and bring scientists from Nigeria. I speak from experience that it is a thankless and ultimately pointless business, as the immigration authorities in all Western countries are very well aware of the problems posed by people who travel for ostensibly good reasons and then "defect", claim asylum, or just disappear. Your well-meaning invitation could possibly be cited as a valid travel reason and you could find yourself assuming responsibility for someone you know nothing about. As best you could awaken hopes in the guy which would ultimately be dashed as he fails to get a visa or at worst, he could appear on your doorstep expecting payment and/or support. What do you do then? |

Subject: RE: Musical Nigerian Scam-Or for real? From: Dave Bryant Date: 28 Jan 03 - 07:26 AM Mind you if he came over to the UK and tried to perform, they'd probably lock him up because he didn't have a PEL. I'm sure you don't need one over in Nigeria. |
