I visited my son and daughter-in-law on the weekend. They just found out the baby they are expecting is going to be a boy, and it just happens that the favourite in the name stakes at the moment is Max.

BTW - My son's birthday was last Friday, 24th Jan. He's an Aquarius. They ARE a good sign!

What Katsaid, Max- don't forget to breathe. Believe me, it's real easy to get so caught up in these things. When my wife was in labor with my first child, they decided to do a blood test. Sticking a needle into someone's arm and watching the tube fill with blood was entirely foreign to me at the time. What with the emotions and all, I actually fainted. I felt like an idiot. Here they were, supposed to be helping my wife in labor, and they had to instead devote their attention to me, collapsed on the floor.

Mine took it upon themselves to arrive, one took 3 hours of hard labor, the other 90 minutes. Good thing the back labor was with the shorter one, but oh, I was ready to tear the fixtures off the walls with that afternoon!

Is oxytocin still the drug of choice?

I think they all just come in their own good time. My first was early and labour was short, but intense on my lower back. Second came on the appointed day, with little labour, in 30 minutes. Third was way too early, long, hard lower back pain labour, then came before the docs were ready, I was still in the labour room. She has always done things her way! I later found out it was the way they came out which put so much intense pain on my lower back and it was related to the way I am built.:-)

We're half way there. I just ran home (we're only a few blocks from the hospital) to check on the cats (2 real, 1 virtual) and get some lunch.

Sure enough, it is back labor. They gave her an epidoral around noon, and are now dripping the petosin to kick up the contractions a notch. She's in a much better mood now. She's about 5cm dialated, and moving about 1cm per hour.

Funny thing, I was reading a 1972 issue of Sing Out magazine, the one right after Gary Davis died, when the medicine man came in. He asked why I was reading such an old magazine and if I'm famous or something. Couldn't for the life of him figure out why I would read such a silly old Folk magazine. So I told him that Yes, I am famous.

Thanks for all the kind words and stuff. I'll tell Emily she has the whole world rooting for her. I'll call Pene as soon as we have a new mudkitten to tell you all about it. Looks like sometime tonight. Later.

Max, maybe something therapeutic would help her through that kind of labor. Take a few phone books from very large cities to let her rip with her bare hands during each contraction. ;-) You might ask if a really firm massage of her lower back would help--but be prepared to move out of the way quickly if it doesn't. The tennis balls are supposed to help with the lower back pain, though I never had them on hand. Of course, it also helps if they don't make you lie flat on your back with your feet in the air, too! Squatting might help, esp. with her back up against a wall.:-)

Being experiened with four myself, don't take any notice of her when she say never again, i hate you for doing this to me, and when she holds your hand and sticks her nails into you as she pushing, you Max have to grin a bare that little bit of pain.

In one breath she will want you, but as you go to help she will scream at you, she wont mean it, just be there, gentle, strong and what ever else is needed.

I had back labours too, no fun at all... takes longer than usual and a LOT more pain...... the epidural does help a lot though!!

the induction can take a while, can take a few doses of whatever they use over there to ripen the cervix before labour even gets going.....

but emily's half way there now and going fine by the sound of it, 1cm /hour is textbook for a first baby.......

lets hope it swings round for the delivery

It's two parts, dilation and efacement. You want that sucker to eface because that means it's getting thinner (stretched out) and the baby can proceed through. I was efaced enough on my second one that the doctor just carefully pushed the cervix out of the way before I'd reached 10 centimeters. Kat, you're absolutely right--it's an abomination that any woman is made to lie on her back (for the covenience of the doctor) and push while her legs are in the air.

getting to fully dilated is the end of 1st stage then 2nd stage (which textbooks say takes 1 hour for a 1st baby... but it could be longer if the baby is still facing the wrong way.... took me 4.5 hours!!)

with a 1st baby effacement happens before dilation occurs, (hence it can take a while to get started)... with subsequent babies effacement & dilation happen at the same time... so the labour is usually quicker....
