At 7:23 pm Lily Ani was born. 9lb 1oz, chubby cheeks, looks like Emily. Everybody's healthy.

I'm home, though my girls are not yet. They had a shortage of cots tonight at the hospital, so I solved their problem by coming home tonight. Everyone is very happy and healthy (and very tired), so it is certainly a joyous occasion. Can't rest yet, I have some pictures to put online. Just walked in the door for 24 hours of making life, so it may take me a moment to get my thoughts in order. Be back in several moments with some pictures, and hopefully more coherent thought.

Max, proofread the birth certificate! You two have chosen a beautiful name, and Pene Azul wrote it as "Lili Ani." Two 'L's. But I see many have already managed to misspell it with three 'L's. (Sorry to introduce this minor key, but my daughter's name was misspelled on her birth certificate after I expressly spelled it out letter by letter to the woman from the hospital who thought simple forms were too difficult for parents to fill out accurately! I had to jump through hoops to get it corrected!)

I tip my glass of wine to you all of you! Now try to get some sleep.

Oops - only in the world for a few hours before I misspelled her name! Sorry about that, and for leaving Alexis out. As much as I wasn't nuts about the name at first, it sounds wonderful when you say it all at once: "Lilyani" Of course, I'm assuming the "Ani" part is pronounced "Ahni." Right or wrong?

I notice there are no photos of Emily. She probably threatened to hurt Max, I dunno. Thanks for the photos - cute little crib critter baby.

I can only echo all that's been said above.
Start a scrapbook, with plenty of photos and notes, we took photos but 20 years later we can't remember all the locations, and can't recall all the funny things our kids said and did.Now is a golden time enjoy it to its full.

Congratulations to Lili Ani, Max, Emily, and the whole family (aunts, uncles, grandparents?)...

She's so cute in the pictures, but then again, all newborns are kind of cute. We'll see how cute you think she is at age 4 when she keeps waking you up in the wee wee hours of the morning.

If you need a fun guidebook for rearing her, I can recommend George Bernard Shaw's "Parents and Children." His basic thesis is that each new child is an attempt by God to start over fresh, and interference on the part of the parents can only muck it up.

And now we fast forward to Sweet 16 where Miss Lily, who now insists on "Lila", is on stage, golden hair to the waist, guitar (a Martin, of course) in hand. Big Sister Alexis plays fiddle, she too with waist length hair but hers is drawn back off her face in a silver clasp fashioned by Don Meixner or maybe bone by AllanC. The sisters are clad in layers of bubble wrap, modest but intriguing. And down front, led by a wild potato thonged Mick, is an army of hairy old men and tie dyed old women all keeping a wary eye out for any young man who dares to show interest.

In the entrance sits Max with Uncle Pene at a table full of CDs. The loving girls have generously set aside part of the table for their ersatz relatives' cassettes, CDs, 8-tracks, and LPs but put a firm foot down when Dad trotted out the 18th Annual Nude Mudcat Calendar.

And in the last row, hanging on every note, is a besotted and middle-aged MattR trying to quiet the ever curmudgeonly Kendall who is stage whispering about Taylors and Martins and Apollos.

Just can't wait!

Also SRS....I'm with Sorch.........We all get really hung up on kids because we love 'em so much. When we adopted Tris we were lucky enough to bring him straight home from the hospital and when I looked at him I thought he was the most beautiful thing in the world. But prior to becoming a Dad and all AND if you really take a good look at any baby, you have to agree that "beautiful baby" is an oxymoron. Egads what a frightening thing they are. Wan't it Cosby who said they "didn't look done and needed to go back in the oven for awhile?" Actually when I look at how grossly lacking we are as a species, I am constantly amazed that we are at the top of the chain...at the moment.

Puppies are cute. Babies are wrinkled up, pruney, reddish-splotchy little suckers. But like all of you, I find them just adorable.

I have Mediterranean House Geckos living in my mailbox. They move in every summer, and climb the wall to the porchlight to graze on bugs at night. They find it inconvenient when the postal carrier puts stuff in with them. But they'd like to know if something has arrived in Max's mailbox also!

I know mail delivery takes awhile in the mountains here, usually because the mule keeps balking, but is Pennsylvania that wild and wooly? How can it take so long? Arrrrgh!

it's problematic - mail in THIS neck o' the woods (Upstate NY) has been known to take 10 days or more to get a first class letter the seven miles from the Penn Yan Post Office to my house. It's not unusual for me to receive a bill AFTER the due date.
