Subject: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: GUEST,Ralphie....(Not at Home) Date: 30 Jan 03 - 04:46 PM Thought some UK people (and elsewhere, if you've got Radio Streaming) That I'll be breaking through the glass of the Johnnie Walker show BBC Radio 2 to do a little interview and play a tune. Apparently my little vignette on Mondays show, caused a flurry of E Mails. So, I'm back tomorrow, for a proper chat...! I've even managed to get a good friend to do the mix...! Thanks if any of you contacted the show....I'll try and play properly tommorrow! Show time...1700 -1900 UK time...I'll probably be on in the second hour, but can't guarantee that. So, tune in, and see the Emperor minus his clothes.! Regards Ralphie |

If it helps, just think that it's your mates here you're talking to! When I do radio interviews though, I find I'm usually pacing around the house (on a cordless) .. would that work in the average studio I wonder? Anyway, think of it like having a baby .. this time tomorrow night it'll all be over **G** |

Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Dave Bryant Date: 31 Jan 03 - 04:31 AM Hope it goes well Ralph - although I've never thought of you as little - well not in the vertical plane anyway. |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Noreen Date: 31 Jan 03 - 05:14 AM I suppose I'd better keep hold of the steering wheel, Ralphie dearest, but- well, you know I've been waiting a long time to meet you, and Hille says... :0) Love N xx |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Dave Bryant Date: 31 Jan 03 - 05:53 AM Noreen - You can just see him in the "Red Lion" photo HERE, although McGrath's partly obscuring him with his beer glass. You can also see him in quite a lot of the Parliament Square photos such as THIS ONE. Just look for that head of light grey hair at a high altitude - he's at least as much in evidence as me. |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Noreen Date: 31 Jan 03 - 06:19 AM Just look for that head of light grey hair at a high altitude... Thanks Dave, but they're sitting down :0) ...that head of light grey hair... with the guitar, or the one with the Anglo, or the one with the saxophone, or... *grin*? Not that I'm obsessing or anything- well actually I am a bit at the moment, but I'll get over it. |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: treewind Date: 31 Jan 03 - 06:44 AM Noreen - It 'll be the concertina but it's not an anglo - Ralphie plays a McCann duet which is alot bigger than most anglos. So - Ralphie's the one with the big one... ooer, missus! I got a long phone call from his lordship last night, cut short only by my mobile battery running out - so Ralphie, if you're reading this don't take it personally, it wasn't anything you said!!!! Anyway, I hope I get to hear it on the web site after the event - between 5 and 7 I'm likely to be battling my way through the snow to Cambridge to play in a birthday ceilidh. (some of us have to work, you know....) Whatever happens - everybody email the programme afterwards to say how you'd like to hear more music like that etc..... every little helps, and it was only the email reaction to the impromptu performance on Monday that has resulted in tonight's more serious interview. Sock it to'em Ralphie - you're among friends! Anahata |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Dave Bryant Date: 31 Jan 03 - 06:55 AM The one with the Duet Concertina - mind you I think Ralph can play just about anything ! You can also see him in THIS photo from Monday's rally. He's just below a red van with SC on the side, using his mobile phone - if you download the pic, you should be able to zoom in on him. If you've really got the hots for him, you can always try PMing him - he is a member, although he seems to be posting as a guest most of the time these days. Raphie - sort your cookie out ! |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Schantieman Date: 31 Jan 03 - 07:04 AM Good luck Ralphie! I shan't be able to listen live I'm afraid as I shall be busy then, but I'll try and pick it up later. Steve |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Noreen Date: 31 Jan 03 - 07:15 AM Ouch! Why didn't I just say ...or the one with the concertina...? Thank you, kind sirs, for the edumication. Doesn't look that big to me. Still, I suppose it depends on what you're used to... ...everybody email the programme afterwards to say how you'd like to hear more music like that etc. Can we decide after we've heard it? * big grin* And Dave, am I that transparent? Maybe I've frightened him off and he's afraid of being swept away in a tidal wave of PMs when he resets his cookie? Oh, Ralphie! *sigh* |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 31 Jan 03 - 07:22 AM Good luck Ralph! |

Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: treewind Date: 31 Jan 03 - 11:26 AM Oh, I know that picture, I'd forgotten it was there. Of course when you are in the same room it's easy to spot him - he's the beanpole, about 10 feet taller than anyone else! Anahata |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Jeri Date: 31 Jan 03 - 12:42 PM Ed, thanks for the link. I'm listening now and they're talking about various issues. Did I miss Ralphie, will he be on later, or is he one of the talkers? ...looks like Frank Zappa's cousin. |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Ralphie Date: 31 Jan 03 - 12:48 PM Jeri Thanks for the compliment.. Sadly you haven't missed it yet !! Ralphie |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Jeri Date: 31 Jan 03 - 01:01 PM I once had a boyfriend that looked a bit like Frank Zappa. Actually, more like a 6'4" Geddy Lee (chipmunk voice from Rush). Didn't sing like either one though. Thanks, Ralphie. I will listen to the Supremes and wait patiently. |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 31 Jan 03 - 01:35 PM So far so good. Who are all those people? |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 31 Jan 03 - 01:46 PM Well done Ralphie --- dunno who that motormouth was, but the squeezing was excellent. And give JW a slap round the head when you point out that it was Grace Kelly on True Love, not Doris Day. BJ |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 31 Jan 03 - 01:47 PM Well done Ralphie. I didn't even mind missing some Dead Ringers. |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Dave the Gnome Date: 31 Jan 03 - 01:48 PM Well done Ralphie! Just heard it - What a guy:-) Folk on mainstream radio - whatever next? Keep up the good work and thanks from all in Gnomeland... Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: treewind Date: 31 Jan 03 - 02:00 PM Excellent! Heave a sigh of relief, get down to the King and Queen, sink a few pints and enjoy the Coppers... (I hope they made it to London in all the travel chaos) I'm still waiting for JW to play a PJD track but I fear the moment has passed... Anahata |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Mary Humphreys Date: 31 Jan 03 - 02:08 PM Some good points made about PELs Ralphie! I don't know whether folks listening to Radio 2 (other than the Mike Harding listeners) will have been confronted with the issues, so giving them a very clear explanation of what the threats are to traditional sessions was a real coup. Good on you.Hope it stirs things up a bit more. Loved the 'Take 5'. And I always thought it was Dave Brubeck who wrote it.You live and learn. Mary |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Jeri Date: 31 Jan 03 - 02:43 PM Does the Radio 2 studio have a PEL? Nice to get to know a man's instrument as well as the man. Good show, Ralphie. Thanks for letting us know you were on. |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 31 Jan 03 - 05:40 PM Oh bugger. Due to vagaries of London Transport I missed it. Hope it got to the right people... what did you play? And has he heard any Hackney Martians stuff?? LTS Fellow star of the JW prog - 3 days in a row!! |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Nemesis Date: 31 Jan 03 - 08:55 PM Well done Ralphie!! Hille xx There's probably a link to hear it again some where isn't there? |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Ralphie Date: 01 Feb 03 - 05:33 AM Hi Peeps... Thanks for all the messages....Not only here, but, to the show as well. Even got a text message from Jo Whiley ! (Radio 1 DJ) Yes, I did get a crafty dig in about PEL's, by asking if the studio was licensed ! No, Liz...there was no way I was mentioning the Martians !! All the people in there where basically the production crew on the show, plus a bewildered looking Radio 2 announcer! I'll try and find out if its saved on the Beeb web site somewhere..probaby is.. Anahata and Mary...Yes The Coppers were Fab, If a bit late getting there, and yes a pint or two of Adnams was taken! So, thanks again for all the support...I'll wear it always! Love Ralphie xx |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Herga Kitty Date: 01 Feb 03 - 11:15 AM Oh bugger! - sorry Ralphie, I'd had such an awful time getting to work (3 hours, 1 of which was spent between Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus on a Bakerloo train with a blown fuse) that it never occurred to me, when I got back home at 6, that I still could have heard you on radio 2 .... I'm sorry I missed you in Parliament Square on Monday as well - seeing as my (and the Admiral's) Monday interview with a Channel 4 reporter on PEL and the Licensing Bill didn't get shown I'm glad you got a chance to mention it. Nice to see that you and Patterson and Dipper are booked for Whitby this year! Love Kitty xxx |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: GUEST Date: 01 Feb 03 - 12:35 PM Kit... PJD booked at Whitby ??? First I've heard of it... Last I knew was a message from Malcolm Storey, saying "Well, you're not the best thing since sliced bread"...(LOL) If he wants me at Whitby...He'd better be nice to me.. See Ya Ralphie xx |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Mrs.Duck Date: 02 Feb 03 - 12:14 PM We were listening to Radio 2 on route for Kidderminster and lost the signal about ten minutes into the show and spent the rest of the journey listening to white noise and trying various means to track you down! Can't seem to find it in the archives either - bugger!! |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Noreen Date: 02 Feb 03 - 01:24 PM Oh Ralphie dearest, enjoyed your show! :0) Listened to Radio 2 all the way from Manchester to Kidderminster, which is a new experience for me. Thankfully my passengers were co-operative, and the timing was perfect. Heard your whole interview and we were all very impressed. You got a lot in about concertinas as well as PELs- well done! Playing was, of course, superb. Will this be a regular event? Your fan club need to know... |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Herga Kitty Date: 02 Feb 03 - 03:02 PM Ralphie I have a booking form for Whitby, that lists PJD just above Peeping Tom on the guest list.... Suggest left hands talk to right hands? Love Kitty xxx |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: pavane Date: 02 Feb 03 - 06:14 PM Well done with the subtle PEL dig. Had you arranged it with JW beforehand? I was in the middle of applying a poultice to a lame pony at the time, and only caught half of it, but I got you on tape. Russ Conway indeed! |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Ralphie Date: 03 Feb 03 - 03:12 AM Pav... I've heard of people doing weird things whilst listening to the radio, but, applying a poultice to a pony?...Well, whatever gets you through the night, I suppose ! As for the PEL refernce, No, It just occurred to me, as he asked the question..Moot point though. Mrs D....Yes, subtle plan on my part to annoy you...rest assured I have a copy of the prog..Get in touch! Kit...Well, checked with..Have checked with John and James, and no contact with said festival has happened. I might even be out of the country that week ! Noreen, No, It won't be happening again. Don't think I could cope with it. I prefer to be the other side of the glass, thankyou!! While I'm on...Kershaw will be worth a listen this week..trust me Love Ralphie xx |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: Noreen Date: 03 Feb 03 - 07:20 AM Oh Ralphie dear... Do something that scares you every day- then you know you're still alive! (Which is far better than the alternative, I have that on good authority.) |
Subject: RE: Ralphie Breaks the glass !! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 03 Feb 03 - 08:28 AM ...then you know you're still alive! Which is far better than the alternative, I have that on good authority. That sounds intriguing. |
