We're just sitting down to a late Sunday lunch and trying to name actors and charcacters on Z Cars. We're a bit stuck. Start you off with Charlie Barlow/Stratford Johns.

There was a Scots guy named, you've guessed it, Jock.

And Sergeant Lynch was played by James Ellis who is still going strong. It was the first time I heard my own accent on televsion. I gather it caused some confusion to a lot of the audience who had never heard a Belfast accent before. Then came the Troubles and they got more than their fair share.

I think this is actually Colin Welland who went on to work in films like Ken Loach's Kes, wrote some fine plays for TV and won an oscar for his screenplay for Chariots Of Fire.

And I'm slightly embarrassed that my mind is full of this trivia.

PC "Get it in the book" Sweet was the one drowned tryingto save a juvenile delinquent. Also, I'm sure John Thaw played a new team member who quit because he couldn't keep up with the drinking, ironic, that. GREAT SERIES.

Looking at some of those real names is a bit like a who's who though isn't it. Leonard Rossiter, Jos Ackland etc etc.

Can anyone remember (Without the help of Google!) the spin off serieseseses (What is the plural of series?)

The opening theme was deliberately chosen: "Johnny Todd" was apparently as familiar to Liverpool kids as those in Belfast ... I remember watching the early episodes as a very young kid and being told it was for grown ups ...

Made a fine foil for "Dixon of Dock Green" which had some origins from a 50s movie "The Blue Lantern" (where Dixon/Hargreaves was gunned down).
