Subject: Young Tamblin From: Lester Wahlqvist Date: 12 Jul 98 - 12:02 AM Many years ago I had the words to the song "Young Tamblin" but lost them. There were more than 20 verses I think. Does anyone have a copy of this song? |
Subject: RE: Young Tamblin From: Barbara Date: 12 Jul 98 - 01:13 AM I think you are talking about that legendary song of way too many verses, Tam Lin. Try searching the DT, that box at the upper right for either Tam Lin or Tamlin, and see if that gets you your song. Blessings, Barbara |

Subject: Lyr Add: TAM LIN (parody by Les Barker) From: AndyG Date: 13 Jul 98 - 05:01 AM Here y'go Cuilionn;
I forbid you maidens all,
Lady Margaret, Lady Margaret
She's not pulled one rose-red daffodil
And if you touch that red, red bloom,
And what they did I cannot say,
Four and twenty maidens, all sitting in the Hall
Then up spoke one of those girls,
Then up spoke another of those girls,
Go straight to the heart of the Chaser's Wood,
Lady Margaret went down to the Chaser's Wood,
She went straight to the heart of the Chaser's Wood.
Tomorrow he said you will be hanged,
Yet you may live if you will help me,
As I rode out, on a bitter, bitter day,
It is the seventh, seventh year,
Though I will change all in your arms,
So she ran down to the old mill bridge,
First there came a black horse, and then there came a brown,
And they changed him then, it was all in her arms,
And they changed him again, it was all in her arms,
And they changed him again, it was all in her arms,
And they changed him again, and Biggles he became,
And they changed him again, into John Major,
"Just one more, my love." he cried,
Four and twenty maidens, all sitting in the Hall,

Subject: RE: Young Tamblin From: Lester W Date: 18 Jul 98 - 05:48 PM Thank you everyone for your help. The version that I had many years ago I transcribed from a lecture/performance given by, I think it was A.L. Lloyd, at Sydney University in 1971. I always thought he'd sung 'TamBlin' - at least I've finally learnt to leave at the "B" after 27 years! The version he sang started off: "Lady Margaret, Lady Margaret sat sewing at her seem, And she was all dressed in ?, When a thought came in her head she'd a trottin' in the woods, To pull flowers to flower her hat me boys, To pull flowers to flower her hat." And that's all that I can remember! The versions that you have all given or directed me too are different but it's wonderful to have found these. The version entitled 'Tamlyn' is very close to the one I used to sing. Thanks again for your trouble. Lester |
Subject: Tune Add: TAM LIN (Les Barker) From: Snuffy Date: 09 Dec 01 - 08:36 AM Here's the tune of the Les Barker version posted above by AndyG, and presumably also for TAMLYN in the DT database. Les's seems to be based on this version (the first verse is identical)

Subject: RE: Young Tamblin From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 09 Dec 01 - 10:45 AM The DT text was evidently transcribed by ear from a record made by Pete Morton, and contains a number of mistakes due to mis-hearings. He doesn't sing a traditional set, having apparantly added some bits from other versions to A.L. Lloyd's form of the song, which also appears to be a modern adaptation by him (probably based on the text -without a tune- that James Duncan got from Bell Robertson in 1915), with a tune that may or may not be genuine (as usual, Lloyd seems to have been rather coy about where it came from). Frankie Armstrong also sings a modified form of the Lloyd set. Although I haven't heard Les Barker's parody and only vaguely remember the Morton recording, I can confirm that the tune Snuffy has posted is the one put to the song by Lloyd. |
Subject: RE: Young Tamblin From: Garry Gillard Date: 09 Dec 01 - 11:01 AM My "Tamlyn" page attempts to represent what Mike Waterson sings: it also has Lloyd's note and a link to THE Tam-Lin page. Garry |
Subject: RE: Young Tamblin From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 09 Dec 01 - 11:11 AM Thanks for that, Garry; evidently Pete Morton got his set from Mike Waterson, and only made a few changes of his own, the majority having been already made by Mike, who obviously based his text on Lloyd's re-write. That the "new" material came from Child I rather doubt, and Lloyd's comment in his notes suggest that he wasn't convinced either! |
