I wonder if Hamish Henderson had anything to do with that translation (most likely getting someone else to do it for him, I suppose)? He had that hymn (in English) sung at his funeral.

I know this is an old thread, but "Be Thou My Vision" is done in Scots-Gaelic on Maire Brennan's album "Whisper to the Wild Water."

I know of at least one Gaelic Hymn book available. It's called "Seinnidh Dha'n Tighearna". That's "Sing to the Lord".

It was printed up for a Catholic Church in Scotland some time ago, but seems to be the only currently available Hymn book in Gaelic with music. A friend has an OLD! Hymn book used by Presbyterians in Cape Breton early this century, but there is no music with that. Apparently they were all familiar tunes, but I don't recognize many of them.

Th' professor wis luikin' for sheet music, I'm thinkin', or ither things he cuid use tae actually teach a soloist or kirk choir whae's usit tae that sairt o' thing. I dinnae think a' th' puir dears can manage lairnin' "traditionally" by ear. They really seem tae require th' printit bits. D'ye ken ony places tae obtain Irish oor Scots Gaelic printit kirk music?

Cuilionn, Is it ready-to-go church music your professor wants, or is he willing to adapt and arrange tunes and mix-and-match lyrics ? There's plenty available for the first case, and even more if he's thinking of the second case.

Back online after three months o' bein' modemless an' trappit in th' Ivory Tower o' graduate school...jist as I feart, this wee request wis lost in th' mist on th' virtual muir. I'll try agin ane last time an' then abandon this hope tae th' fates. While I'm on th' subject o' music in th' kirk, I'd be richt thankfu' for ony information aboot Celtic/Gaelic kirk music. I hae a professor whae wairks at an Episcopal cathedral, an' wuid like some sources for music they can use in their kirk. I ken there's some verra auld traditional music aroond, but dinnae ken whaur tae direct him. Ony ideas?

In an earlier thread about the song, I posted two pleading requests for the Scots Gaelic lyrics to "Be Thou My Vision." Unfortunately, since I wrote my request in Broad Scots, no one seems to have understood what I was pleading for... So, with utmost restraint, I am now restricting myself to the tongue of the Sassunachs. Will someone, can someone, would someone PLEASE post the Gaelic lyrics? I'll even take Irish Gaelic, but I know Scots Gaelic lyrics exist and I'd dearly love to learn them. I'd like to have the song learned in time for a Gaelic-only ceilidh on August first.
