Subject: RE: BS: gulf war -not alot of people know this From: NicoleC Date: 09 Feb 03 - 03:27 PM Well, duh! Like housing costs, soldiers get an allowance above and beyond their salary to spend on uniforms, boots, etc. They then go and purchase the appropriate sizes and quanities, get any tailoring they need, dry cleaning and so forth. A soldier who takes decent care of his uniform items has no problem staying with the allowance. I guess our trolling guest would prefer to go back to they way the army used to be -- where you were assigned clothing and boots that came in two sizes -- too large and too small. |

Subject: RE: BS: gulf war -not alot of people know this From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 09 Feb 03 - 04:11 PM I think the British Army probably still works that way. As does the Iraqi Army, which appears to have remarkably similar uniforms to the British - I hope someone has pointed this fact out to the Americans! |

Subject: RE: BS: gulf war -not alot of people know this From: artbrooks Date: 09 Feb 03 - 07:15 PM Standard US Army issue boots come in a very wide variety of sizes, and they will fit just about everybody. However, the way they feel doesn't necessarily please everyone, and soldiers are free to buy/wear their own, as long as they look more or less the same. |

Subject: RE: BS: gulf war -not alot of people know this From: mack/misophist Date: 09 Feb 03 - 10:22 PM Twice in my life I've seen newspaper articles about men who were so big they volunteered to pay for some things (shoes mostly, I think) to be accepted at all. |

Subject: RE: BS: gulf war -not alot of people know this From: Teribus Date: 10 Feb 03 - 02:46 AM Nothing new in this - it has been done for years Para's and Royal Marines refer to their back-packs, rucksacks as "Bergans", comes from the brand name of a Norwegian manufacturer, first thing many did on arriving in Norway for arctic, or mountain, warfare training, was to buy one locally and ditch the standard British Forces issue one. Same kind of story with the boots. |
