Subject: Quiz: Variations on a theme
From: Bullfrog Jones
Date: 11 Feb 03 - 10:16 AM

All answers are music-related and link to a common theme. Full answers and the correct theme will yield 15 (virtual) points.

1. A recently-departed rail traveller much loved by Scottish
   weavers. (3 points)
2. One half of an impromptu ballot. (2 point)
3. The debut performance by a Stravinskian quartet. (2 points)
4. A brilliant composition interpreted by the unemployed scions
   of Clan Campbell. (3 points)
5. The musical home of said Clan. (1 point)
6. Round-the-clock songsmith who sounds like he'd be in his
element with the composer in Question 4. (3 points)

What's the theme? (1 point)

Marion --- Question 2 is the right band, but the wrong half! That might set you on course for the others.

The theme is Drink

2 is (Phil) Beer and 4 is Red Red Wine
1 is Nancy Whiskey as Snuffy says above

Don't know the rest but 4 was composed by Neil Diamond and this seems to be relevant to the clue for 6.

O.K., so you've got:

1. Nancy Whiskey/Calton Weaver
2. Phil Beer/Show of Hands
3. ?
4. UB40's Robin & Ali Campbell singing Red Red Wine, composed by Neil Diamond
5. ?
6. ?

And as Declan says the theme is drink.

"The Stravinsky Quartet" In May 1994 the Quartet took part in the St. Petersburg "Musical Spring" (although what 'Spring' a source of Water has to do with drink I'll never know!, unless it's something added to a malt scotch!)

6, "In his element with Neil Diamond" ? Diamond being Carbon, this must be a reference to 'Coal'.
'Cole' Porter ? (Porter: a dark brown malt liquor)

Nigel -- spot on in all areas for no. 6, but off course on no.3. The word is Stravinskian, not Stravinsky.

Aaaaaarrrrgggghhhh!!!!!! I've just realized that I made an enormous howler in Question 3. Ahem, try replacing the word Stravinskian with Vivaldian........

Oh, the shame of it.

Sorry!

I am assuming Snuffy got No.5 right prior to your up-date of the answers.
Are we now 100% ?

Well done on no.3, Nigel, and no, you're still looking for no. 5, the musical home of the (Ian) Campbells.

Oh that! From this thread.

The Ian Campbell Folk Group quickly became the most popular such group in the country, and hosted one of the most successful folk clubs, The Jug o' Punch. As well as the Campbells' outstanding singing, the group featured the instrumental combination of Dave Swarbrick's fiddle and John Dunkerley's banjo. Dave Pegg was a later member.
