Subject: Today was a good day
From: Jerry Rasmussen
Date: 11 Feb 03 - 10:56 PM

Today was a good day. When I woke up this morning and looked out the window, we had another four inches of snow on the ground. I was glad that I had my sight to see it. When I went out to shovel the sidewalk, I was glad I had a good snow shovel, and not that old coal shovel I used when I was a kid. As I stepped out the door, the wind hit me, and I could feel the blast against my face. It was only 14 degrees above zero. I was thankful that I had a warm coat and gloves to keep my hands warm. When I was shoveling the snow, every shovel full was heavier. I was thankful that I have the strength to do it.
When I went to start the car, I was thankful that it kicked in right away, and I was glad that the heater warmed the car quickly and melted the ice on the windshield. When I went back in the house I was thankful that I have such a beautiful, loving wife, and a warm home to come in to.

We went out to one of our favorite restaurants for lunch. We had fish and chips. The fish, the chips and the cole slaw were all delicious, and we like the pub where we went.

The drive back home was beautiful, with the newly fallen snow decorating the trees, leaving a sparkling, crystaline landscape.

And so the day went. I imagine tomorrow will be different, but a good day, too. Life is filled with simple pleasures. What a joy to be able to get up in the morning without pain. To be able to see. To be able to walk. To have a beautiful, loving wife. To be able to hear. To be able to enjoy a simple meal.

How does that Casey At The Bat line go... "There's no joy in Mudville tonight?" Well, there's some joy in Mudcat tonight.

Anyone else see the beauty all around us, and feel thankful for it? I'm thankful for Bobert, and Khandu, and Leadfingers, and Noreen, and jimmyt, and Col K, and Jeanie, and Sian and Sorcha, and Katlaughing. And Songs2play, and Miken, and Allan C, and Sussex Carole and Burl, and.... too many of you to list.

"How many good times are taken for granted, and only remembered when they've passed away?"

Howzabout you?

Jerry

Jerry I can tell you that when I read the title of the thread , I said, this must be Jerry. I wish we were all able to approach life like you do. I try, but frequently fail. I am also thankful for everything that the world has offered me most of which I don't deserve. I taught my kids when they were little, "Life ain't always fair, sometimes to the good sometimes to the bad." If we all approached life with the attitude you have, it would sure be a wonderful place!

Yes Jerry it was a beautiful day today! And your post just made it a whole lot prettier here at Mudcat.
You make me want to share a poem-so I will!

                         Looking Out
I sit holed up in this little cabin in the woods.
I watch the snow come down, and the sun reflect it's shine
Looks so divine.         Fairies glitter spread atop of the world.
I watch through the window at the little chick-a-dees
       Scampering off erratically
The blue-jays squawk and do their dancing in the trees
Holding their heads high and gracefully
The wolves cry is the lonely cry of winter
The wind seems to sigh at the wolves capture
For the deer fall silently as the snow.
I don't know if it's the wind that tells the owl    Or the owl to the wind
Of all the wise and wonders of the land
Occasionally a pair of leaves, captured by a breeze,
Dance along spirited and playfull - Yet restless for their journeys end
      Back to where they came.
A fox chase rabbit game is also played out-
To the foxes delight he wins the game
A high squeal emits from the rabbit   Could it be a squeal of delight also?
For it no longer has to play the game.
And with the long winter will come an occasional thaw
The icicles repeat themselves, throughout this time
The sun will do a dance through them
With reflections of spring to come.
I watch intently the life of winter And wait patiently for the sun to dance
               Through the final icicle

Peace. Rustic

Yes, Jerry. Gratitude is so, so important. Among the things on my list of things to be grateful for today are.....Blue sky and sunshine! And cold, clean air..... fish in the freezer (caught by a wonderful son) and food in the pantry, a washing machine that works, and fresh clean sheets, four senior citizens friends who will love the Valentines I will make for them, a job to go to everyday, the chance to play with children and hear their outrageous, contagious giggles, a note in a four year old's handwriting that says "I love you," great co-workers, and wonderful friends to make music with. And the fact that tomorrow I will be able to start a whole new list in my gratitude journal!!! In these times of uncertainty, when there is so much tension in the air, it's good to reflect on the good. Thanks for the thoughts, Jerry.   KT

Jerry, you're right. It was a good day for me too. Fun things happened at work, they usually do for me. Then I got home and my wife and kids were glad to see me. I had stew and habanero jerky and grapefruit soda and spearmint skittles. Then I got to get on the computer for a friendly sparring session with all you old hippies.

It made me realize how much I like you folks, even though I'm a jack-booted thug.

All I can say is Right On, Far Out and Groovy.

Jerry:

Thanks!!

I had a great day, too. The car started right up, and it was raining lightly, but still in the light-jacket temperatures, and I was glad of it! I worked all day on an interesting project and came home. BBW and I worked on paperwork and I madeher some dinner, and we heard from our livewire super-daughter, Barky, who is doing mighty well. All things considered, a real jewel of a day, full of the best of friends, and the finest of people. Including you, man!!

My car didn't "start right up" but it did start.
My dogs and kids were wonderful. I spent a lot of time with them.
Watched the last night of Westminister Dog Show with good friends.
I am not drunk.
There is still money in the checking account. No overdraught charges.
Lots of food in pantry/freezer.
I am alive, and so are my husband/children. Someones 15 yr old girl child 30 miles from here is still missing after her morning paper route............
My house is warm, the hot/cold/flush facilities work.
I have firewood to burn and am allowed to burn it.
Mudcat is still here.
I don't have to go the river to do the laundry.
I don't have to build a fire in the back yard (with cow chips) to cook meals.
My fiddle is all in one piece, as are all my other instruments.
Many others.......

I went to the ocean after work and it was the most beautiful sunset..all golden in the sand dunes and bright blue ocean and bright pink sun. I have a heater that works and I had sausages and green peppers and onions for dinner..doesn't get much better..mg

Yes life is wonderful:
I have my health ...
I have some great friends, many of them mudcatters ...
I have enough resources to live on ...
I can walk in the countryside and see the magic of nature ...
I can sing, sometimes well ...
I can play my concertina and am learning to play it better ...
I can dance ...
I am even developing a friendship with my soon-to-be ex-wife ...(!)

Yes, Jerry, thank you.
I try to remind my kids to have an "attitude of gratitude"-
Yesterday I was overcome with the realization that we're so lucky (privileged, really) to have warm cars that speed us to our destination at this time of year- our predecessors in NH looked at winter as 6 months of just plain being cold.
Every day I am astounded at the quantity and variety of the food we have available to eat. And I'm a single mom, with two teenagers, and I am able to keep them fed! Wow!
I haven't had a drink in one year and 6 weeks.
I'm sitting here at this magic box, talking to dozens of folks all over the world! Amazing!!
My mom's knee surgery was yesterday (and was successful!)- I have a boss who is giving me the day off to be with her. And half of Friday to be with my SO for his surgery.
I have two good legs, a healthy body, a voice that somehow manages to inspire others to sing with me, lots of opportunities to do that, and music in my life.
And on and on and on...

Hi jimmyt.
Life is good and to be grateful that the universe made you is healthy, but please don't think that you don't deserve it. Your here at the end of a long line of things that swam, crawled and climbed your right to be here was won by them, back through all the generations. You are heir to all the struggle that placed you here and you have as much right to exist as a fly or a Whale.
All the best PP

It is almost automatic for many folks to end an encounter with "Have a good day!" My response always is, "I promise!" I always try to keep that promise. There is good in almost ever day. Attitude rules one's ability to find it.

Yesterday was my 58th birthday, and I was around for it.

We had a great dinner of tapas, my wife and I, at a place we hadn't been to before.

The morning's snow was light and fluffy; it stopped by noon, leaving three inches cover. I didn't fall on the ice and had a warm place to live.

I made arrangements for another job interview. Employmentwise, things are doing okay.

We still have some money in the bank.

All in all, a pretty damned good day.

I have never been very good at counting my blessings - I've always taken stuff like that for granted. But your post made me smile, Jerry, and brought tears to my eyes.   If someone else can do that to me, I wonder what would happen to me if I did it....and maybe someone else would like it too.   So here goes:

I am alive, healthy, reasonably fit and not too fat
I have a beautiful intelligent & lively 6 (almost 7) year old daughter
My soon-to-be-ex-wife doesn't hate me (much)!
I have recently started a close relationship with a fine woman who makes me smile.
My job is secure, safe, clean and reasonably well-paid - and when I try I can do it well.
I have a good, strong voice and enjoy singing.   Other people enjoy it too!
A friend whom we though was dying seems to be recovering from cancer.
In middle age I seem to have found out how to make friends - and the Mudcat has helped this enormously!
All the stuff in my house works and I only have a small damp patch on the wall.
My car just keeps going (179 000 miles now)
I have enough to eat and drink and money to afford it.
The sun rises every day.
.......

Steve

Thanks Jerry !!! The weather stayed clear and my husband is home from Las Vegas. The bit of snow we got didn't require shoveling and the house is warm with room enough for everyone. I've got four wonderful kids who push me just enought to keep us all growing and loving.

The first gardening cataloge came yesterday with dreams of spring under the snow. And the IRS actually changed its mind and sent us a check today...

Years ago I had stationary (little yellow notes) called Thank-You Grams. The idea was to write and mail three every night to folks who had made your day better. Not only family and friends, but also the reporter whose story touched you or the friendly clerk at the store. Thanks for helping return the balance Jerry.

My job is reasonably secure, safe, clean and reasonably well-paid - and when I try I can do it well...
All the stuff in my house works...

I have enough to eat and drink....
My bank balance is not in the red...
The bills are paid...
My stress level is well under control (for a teacher), and I'm cool calm and collected...
My 2 kids aren't yobs /vandals/ don't do drugs
My wife doesn't do any chores, nor contribute financially, but that's fine, I cope, no complaints...(she had a stroke a few years ago)
I look in the garden and see the snowdrops, crocuses, & soon the daffodils, and the trees are in bud...
I cn walk in the local countryside & enjoy a pint & a pub lunch...
The morning was frosty, still and bright, almost magical...
I do some work in the community, when many decline, and I think how great it is to be able to make a contribution to the quality of local life...

You know somethin', Jerry? I had gotten myself to the point, in my mind, where I just felt like The Mudcat was like a neighborhood past its prime. It had gone, for me, from a unique gathering spot for musicians to talk about music and the issues that spawned the music, to a lot of folks using it to just talk so they could hear the sound of their own voices. I found myself doing this. Mind you, this isn't necessarily a bad thing because some folks need that. In fact, that makes it a good thing. Just not a thing for me. For me, it had lost its freshness. And it had lost its ability to inspire me to think, and talk through tough issues. And so I had reduced myself to just popping in and looking around whenever I felt like it. I stay in touch, because there are many of you that I want to meet 3D someday. But a couple of things have happened in the last few days that make me see the value of this place again. I see my friend Rick perform in Windsor with all he is dealing with, and I am inspired deeply. I listen to the songs he chooses and watch his delivery, and I realize how lucky I am to know this amazing layabout. I look at his wife Heather, and watch her clap and laugh at every song, even though she has heard it so many times, and I realize it is because she absolutely loves watching him perform and loves the man. And I realize, again, what a good day it is and how lucky I am to know people like this. I meet ddw, Devilmaster, and maire-aine.....find they are great, think back to all of those that I have met and come to know, and realize what a good day it was when I found this place. There are those here that I literally have come to love in a familial way and you know who you are, and my life is better for that. I have had Dan Milner and Ed Trickett give me songs to record.......who'd a thought????.....and just the pondering of that makes it a good day. Yeah, our neighborhood is suffering a little for the fools, but if I look for the good instead of those with problems, I find it is still the place I came to love. Yep, it is a good day.

Jerry, you started this because you saw all the despair over impending events and you realized that the folks in this place needed to close their eyes, forget the problems, open them up and look at all they are blessed by, instead of all that is scary. That is a reflection of the faith you live so well, my friend. You don't preach, you provide an example. What you are speaks louder than what you say you are. In your case, that is a good thing, no.....a great thing. God bless you.

Today you made me realize again how much I love this place. Today is a good day.

All the best,

Mick

Thanks for posting the poem, Rustic.. We have a window bird feeder and I never tire of watching the birds and squirrels jockeying for the food. And thanks, Alanww for the quote from the Blackbird... very true. I wrote a song about birds too, titled the Blackbird... different feel: "Blackbird he don't tell the truth, you ask for whiskey and you get Vermouth."

And Allan C, your post reminded me of this verse:

"Be your fortune good or bad
There is hope in every day
So for all the burdens that we share
Let us lift our voice in praise"

Often it's the burdens that people bring to Mudcat that remind us that we are all in this together.

And every time I see my friend Joe, who is a greeter at Walmart, I say "Have a good day," and He answers, "You have a better one." It's become a game with us to see who can wish the other person an even better day.

Jerry

Today is okay...
I'm learning the fiddle! I'm actually getting it! It's the instrument I love most and after a couple of false starts, I suddenly "get" it!
I have a nice warm little home that I can afford to pay for.
I have work I love after all these years.
My son is a decent human being. I have mostly raised him and he is okay.
I get to play music with Kendall pretty soon.
My parents are still alive and we are close!
The okame cherry trees are in bloom which means spring is not far behind!

(I must say that constant exposure to the buildup for war is very upsetting and unsettling to me and the tirades about our gov't have finally gotten to me...sorry friends, I am decidedly flawed...)

I awoke this morning! All systems go and in working order. With a slow awakening, I felt the comfort of our bed, stroked the cat which had crawled under the covers to drape himself over my hip, while the rumble of his love-purr vibrated against my skin. I was awake, all body parts working, brain alert, partner beside me and my dog was so darn glad I couldn't help but smile.

Then the kitties, all six of them, great harmonies, started singing for their breakfast, twining just in front of my every step to the warm *potty*, then out to the warm and light kitchen to let the dog out for a little bladder relief.

The sky has not fallen, birds were at the feeder, and the nip in the air was invigorating and even maked??! made my mature, full-goddess breasts perky, again.*bg*

There will be more as the day unfolds, ready to be told at the close of day, but for now, I remember that yesterday was a good day, too. Yesterday, I received an unexpected package in the mail, an out-of-the-blue gift from a fellow Mudcatter-friend. "I saw this and felt that you would enjoy a copy, so I bought you one." Oh, wow, a book with photographs and commentary of Wise Women. Made me laugh and cry altogether; with the joy of the book and the even greater joy at the thoughfulness and insight of this friend. Also gave me even more to look forward to on this journey we call Life.

Yesterday was a good day; a day of balance. The book from a friend, a positive response on a business proposal. Several phone calls with good friends. Unsettling news on another front. Today will bring more news, either way.

Jerry, thanks for this. I have long practised thanks giving and it is a good way to live, imo. Every morning and at night before I go to bed, I give thanks for all that we have, all that we give and all that we receive. And, it is so much fun to give!!

Great to read everyone's responses, too.

Today was a good day. (Actually it led me to exclaim, "There IS a God!" YMMV.)

The person I have been trying to track down for some technical assistance as part of my healthcare team has been swimming in the same pool as I, for some weeks, and today I found out who she was, and we are all set to do a consult next week, and had half the consult in the water while working out. This meant that I was late leaving the pool, and was thus in time to run into the second person I have been trying to track down, to make a plan for a class I am uniquely qualified to present, in the same pool.

This, on top of yesterday having the WRONG technical assistance on the same topic, and on top of last week discussing the same class with the WRONG person at another pool!

I think I appreciate the doors that have slammed shut as much as the ones that present themselves, open before me. So easy to see which way to go, and beat-feet in that direction.

Another great day at the ocean. Actually I always say any day I have enough to eat and no bombs falling on me is a great day. Learned to make ice cream with stevia and now I can have ice cream for breakfast. Just took a walk among the cranberry bogs in bright warm sunshine. My boss is gone today so I can get caught up at work. Still breaking into various songs leftover from Rainycamp....I am going to listen to soaring spirit internet radio all day. Just read the missile from Korea could reach here though. That is not pleasant..but think of all the people who worried about whether their sneakers were Nike or some other brand..it all goes into perspective at some point...

Well, this is a wonderous day. I opened this thread to find my good friend Jerry is thankful for me and ya' know what? I'm thankful for you and your with, Ruth. I'm thankful for Khandu and Tweed. Kat, Amos, Richie, Ebbie, Nicole. I'm thankful for that knothead Doug. I'm thankful the GUEST has stuck one foot out of the closet. I'm thankful for MIck, and Don First, and Little Hawk. Heck, I'm even thankful for Teribus, speaking of which I'm danged thankful that Teribus didn't give me any long homework assignments recently.

And I'm thankful for Joe Offer and Max for keeping enough duct tape of the Catbox to keep it going. And I'm thankful that, though I had to get pulled out of snow bank this morning that I didn't hit the woman who was standing in front of me on an icey hill. And I'm thankful to have my old Martin out of the guitar shop and for my wonderful wife and for God, above all.

Yeah, today is a pretty darned good day, I'd have to say.

And thanks for the thread, too, Jerry.

Thankful Bobert

I felt good about this thread last night when it was less than half an hour old. After reading today's inspiration, I can say that positive thoughts seem to spread like wildfire. Thank God for Jerry and all you good people that I have never met.

Jerry, thanks for the great thread and thanks to all of you for the uplifting thoughts. We in Washington are a bit nervous today, but we must be thankful that our lives in many ways are bliss compared to what many people around the world face every day. Like you, Jerry I'm grateful for a loving wife, and also aged but hale parents, and four fine sons, and a too many good friends to name. I'm greatful for the gift of music and the opportunity to share it with you and all of mudcat. Jerry tell the beautiful Ruth hello, and keep sharing your thoughts with us. You are a veritable guiding light on many a day. chance

Big Mick: Like you, I run through dry spells with Mudcat... especially recently. I mean, how many threads do we need telling us that Bush is an arrogant, dangerous man? I already know that. In case I should forget, all I have to do is turn on the news, watch TV or read the paper. I don't read the Iraq threads either. Again, I can read or watch more than I want to on the topic, and everyone who comments on it has some agenda that you have to figure out to try to get at what you think is the truth (that fits your agenda.) It's not that I disagree with the threads, because I don't. I just don't want to stop in at Mudcat to read about BW or Osama, or Saddam.

But, Max is very wise. He has given us this site to make of it what we want. I'm glad that there is the freedom to rant and rave, whether I agree with everything or not. But, I don't want to give up the site completely to politics and endless disgruntled threads. We have the freedom to make Mudcat whatever we want it to be. Max has given us that, and we should be grateful to him. I see much in life to enjoy, have a hearty laugh over, or just a subtle smile. Life is too good to be lost in the obvious stresses that we live in with every day. C-Flat understands all of this. The trick is to see how many things we have to be thankful for when we've had what, by all descriptions would be called a lousy day. Even lousy days have much to be thankful for.

A while back, I was standing in an express line at the supermarket. A young woman was behind the counter, and was obviously new on the job. She kept making mistakes, and the guy in front of me just got nastier and nastier. The more he made mean-spirited remarks, the more nervous she became. Finally I said to him, "My wife and I were just up visiting someone with terminal cancer who will never be able to stand up again. I know that she'd be very happy to be able to trade places with you." He didn't acknowledge that I'd even spoken to him, but after he checked out, he turned to me, and to the young woman behind the counter and said, "Have a nice day!"

That was a good day, too..

Stick around, Big Mick... we need you.

Jerry

Yes it was.
My throat stopped hurting
My husband took me out to lunch.
Molly wore her red tights and pint dress
Rowan didn't wet himself at nursery
Alec volunteered to put the twins to bed
Natasha was smiling
Maddie played the violin, some right notes in there somewhere!
I am in love and that put a smile on Geoffs face
I have so many friends

And I had a phone call from InOBU from New York in America far away, and he sang me a new song he'd just written (and it's here on the Mudcat), and he was in great voice. And we're both looking forward to February 15th in our different corners of the world.

Just because things are looking hairy is no reason to let it get to you. Looking back the happiest memories can come from some of the hardest times.

As the song puts it, How can I keep from siging?

It's A Great Day To Be Alive

Written by Darrell Scott.
(© House Of Bram/EMI April Music.)

I got rice cooking in the microwave.
Got a three day beard I don't plan to shave.
And it's a goofy thing but I just gotta say,
Hey, I'm a-doing alright.
Yeah I think I'll make me some homemade soup.
Feelin' pretty good and that's the truth.
It's neither drink nor drug induced,
No, I'm just doin' alright.

And it's a great day to be alive.
I know the sun's still shinin' when I close my eyes.
There's some hard times in the neighborhood,
But why can't every day be just this good?

It's been fifteen years since I left home,
Said good luck to every seed I'd sown.
Give it my best and then I left it alone.
Oh, I hope they're doin' alright.

Now I look in the mirror and what do I see?
A lone wolf there starin' back at me.
Long in the tooth but harmless as can be:
Lord, I guess he's doin' alright.

And it's a great day to be alive.
I know the sun's still shinin' when I close my eyes.
There's some hard times in the neighborhood,
But why can't every day be just this good?

Sometimes its lonely,
Sometimes its only,
Me and the shadows that fill this room.
Sometimes I'm fallin',
Desperately callin':
Howlin' at the moon.
Ah oooh.

Instrumental break.

Well, I might go get me a new tatoo,
Or take my old Harley for a three day cruise,
Might even grow me a fu man chu.

And it's a great day to be alive.
I know the sun's still shinin' when I close my eyes.
There's some hard times in the neighborhood,
But why can't every day be just this good?

It's a great day to be alive.
I know the sun's still shinin' when I close my eyes.
There's some hard times in the neighborhood,
But why can't every day be just this good?

Ah oooh.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
