Lucky me gets to spend next academic year in California (I'm English) and I'm going to be studying for a year in San Diego. I know this is a little early but I'm scouting out possible folk clubs for while I'm out there. Anyone got any suggestions?

There's only one Johnny Walker in the San Diego phone book, but he says he's the wrong guy.

There are a number of John Walkers, but they don't look like La Jolla residents from their phone book listings. Did you have an old address or phone number for him?

I'll see what other leads I can find. How long ago did you lose touch?

     A hearty band of 25 SDFSS carolers visited Sam and Leslie Hinton plus Johnny and Almarine Walker on New Year's Day to share the joys of singing Christmas carols.  Sam entertained us with a few of his unique, seldom heard seasonal specialties.  Johnny, "The Yorkshire Tyke," recited the Albert Ramsbottom tale of the lad who was swallowed by a toothless lion and regurgitated whole and unharmed.  What a delight to hear these two patriarchs of folk music at their best.  Thank you, Sam and Johnny, for sharing a bit of Christmas with us.

Hi, if you are expecting to be in the USA in San Diego you may suffer from culture shock. Ca, esp cities tends today to be the exclusive pounding ground of Poms Aussies etc with a fair smattering of Asians and white hairs of yon age when hippies ruled. There are also lots of Latinos whose folk music is excellent.

To find America travel east into Colorado, Kansas and the Ozarks. There you will find real Americans playing and singing American folk music.

Tonighty the Ozark will be played in the Bedford folk club ,The Kings Arms, England, and will be joined by Johnny Collins and little me. I left out the ''ole' bit.

"Back East" to folks in SD is anything East of El Centro.
Also, be sure to get to know Lou Curtiss - you can listen to his show on World Music Radio on Sat am.

This page (click) gives a schedule of regular folk music events in San Diego. I went to the second-Saturday gathering at St. Andrew's Lutheran church in La Mesa, and I really enjoyed it. I understand there's another song circle that's tied to the Rise Up Singing songbook, which some people condemn. That's not the La Mesa session, however - you'll hear unquestionably good music at the La Mesa session, and you'll meet some very nice people.

You should definately make "The Field" (Gas-lamp District) one of your connections to the local folk-music base.

It has been my pleasure to play, on three occasions, within their pub...it is the likes you will seldom find within the western states....very Irish, and friendly.

Play Hard...Have FUN...but indeed be SAFE!!...(go with two trusted friends - San Diego is NOT a "safe-place" for an unescorted female at night!)

My recommendations for great musicians in SD would include Deborah Liv Johnson and Joel Raphael. Also, be sure to attend SD bluegrass club meetings, as well as Folk Heritage concerts. And listen to Sat and Sun folk music on KPFK - LA!!

Last year I was told that there's a bluegrass jam at Fuddrucker's in El Cajon (I think) on Tuesday evenings. Not sure of the details, though, but the folks who go to the second Saturday song circle would know.
