Hi,
I was wondering if anyone new the lyrics to the Vida song "How Can I Cry about Freedom." Vida was a four-woman a capella group from Bloomington, IN. They played their final concert back in 2001.

Thanks,
Brandon

Ican figure some of the lyrics, but not all of them:

HOW CAN I CRY ABOUT FREEDOM

I'm walkin' slowly, takin' in the cloudy day
A river of people passin' (?)___________(?)
I'm feelin' weary, I'm feelin' like I'm wastin' time
The troubles in my life just ain't worth a dime

Oh, sisters, and brothers forgive me for the things I say
I'm losin' the meaning, I'm losin' sense of night and day
(?)_____________________________________(?)
So why is our freedom ruled by a (?)______(?)

And how can I cry about freedom
When I lived a whole life of liberty
And how can I sing about suffering and pain
I sing for all the souls that do not complain

Tomorrow, justice, it seems so high and far away
My people go hungry in the street of each and every day
Whatever can I do, standing here on solid ground
I sing for the silent people, Lord, hear our sigh...OH!!!

I'm wonderin' why blues and blacks and greys are coverin' the world
What is the mystery of the Dark that she stays so long away
Why are my sisters singin' songs (?)________________(?)
Why are my brothers (?)____________(?), so hopelessly

And how can I cry about freedom
When I lived a whole life of liberty
And how can I sing about suffering and pain
I sing for all the souls who do not complain
Who do not complain

Vida's performance of "How Can I Cry about Freedom?" (by Smiley--I think that would be Moira Smiley, a member of Vida) appears on 2 "various artists" compilations: "Contemporary Global Voices" (Music Of The World CD 148, 2000); and "Global Voices: Traditional, Sacred & Contemporary Vocal Music" (Music of the World CD 149, 1998)--a 3-CD set which includes the previous CD. There is a sound sample at Yahoo!. I listened to it, but I couldn't figure out any more words than Brandon posted already.

AHA!!! I never knew this cause i never owned the original printing of the cd and case sleeve, but the bloody lyrics are already printed in the sleeve of the album by Vida that thi song appears: In Bloom. Bloody Hell!!!

Well here's the lyrics, for anyone interested:

HOW CAN I CRY ABOUT FREEDOM

I'm walkin' slowly, takin' in the cloudy day
A river of people passes me and flows away
I'm feelin' weary, I'm feelin' like I'm wastin' time
The troubles in my life just ain't worth a dime

Oh, sisters, and brothers forgive me for the things I say
I'm losin' the meaning, I'm losin' sense of night and day
The sun that I'm seeing is the same around the earth
So why is our freedom ruled by our birth

And how can I cry about freedom
When I lived a whole life of liberty
And how can I sing about suffering and pain
I sing for all the souls that do not complain

Tomorrow, justice, it seems so high and far away
While people are hungry, mistreated each and every day
Whatever can I do, standing here on solid ground
I sing for the silent people, Lord, hear our sound...OH!!!

I'm wonderin' why blues and blacks and greys are coverin' the world
What is the mystery of the dove that she stays so long away
Why are my sisters singin' songs of their pain so beautifully
Why are my brothers crying tears of silence, so hopelessly

And how can I cry about freedom
When I lived a whole life of liberty
And how can I sing about suffering and pain
I sing for all the souls who do not complain
Who do not complain

I just saw Moira Smiley and VOCO at the Kate Wolf Festival in Mendocino where they did a fantastic version of this song, it's on their album Blink. If you can catch them in concert they are a real treat. Just amazing! You will not be disappointed.

Thanks for posting those! I was listening to this song, and I think I was able to fill in some of the parts you had missing. I also heard a couple little things differently. I put my additions/adjustments in brackets [ like this ].

And this song is AMAZING!!

I'm walkin' slowly, takin' in the cloudy day
A river of people [ passes me and goes away ]
I'm feelin' weary, I'm feelin' like I'm wastin' time
The troubles in my life just ain't worth a dime

Oh, sisters, and brothers forgive me for the things I say
I'm losin' the meaning, I'm losin' sense of night and day
[ ? The sun that I'm seein' is the same around the earth ]
So why is our freedom ruled by [ ? our birth ]

And how can I cry about freedom
When I lived a whole life of liberty
And how can I sing about suffering and pain
I sing for all the souls [ who ] do not complain

Tomorrow, justice, it seems so high and far away
[ While ] people go hungry in the street each and every day
Whatever can I do, standing here on solid ground
I sing for the silent people, Lord, hear our [ ? sigh/song/sound ]...OH!!!

I'm wonderin' why blues and blacks and greys are coverin' the world
What is the mystery of the Dark that she stays so long away
Why are my sisters singin' songs [ ? of their pain so beautifully ]
Why are my brothers [ cryin' tears of silence], so [ helplessly ]

And how can I cry about freedom
When I lived a whole life of liberty
And how can I sing about suffering and pain
I sing for all the souls who do not complain
Who do not complain
