Subject: RE: BS: Soccer From: alanabit Date: 13 Feb 03 - 06:20 AM Before we are too dismissive of the feminine propensity to violence I would like to jog the memories of anyone who has played either mixed hockey or mixed rugby. Unfortunately I have done both. I have done many foolish and rash things, but my experience of mixed sport has persuaded me to behave a little more cautiously in the future. It is a bit embarrassing getting stuffed by the Aussies at football though, isn't it? I mean we expect them to wallop us at rugby and cricket, but football? |

Subject: RE: BS: Soccer From: GUEST Date: 13 Feb 03 - 07:03 AM I didn't see the match - had better things (a music session) to do but from the reports I have read, it sounds like our experienced professionals were a disgrace. As for Eriksson, I have my doubts about him for other reasons... Local reports suggest that Ray Clemence has visited Norwich City a few times this season to watch Robert Green, an excellent young goalkeeper. When Eriksson recently visited the area for some Blue Peter thing, it was reported that he didn't really have a clue who Green was. If it is true that Eriksson does not know which players his own scouts are looking at, I don't see any hope... Jon |

Subject: RE: BS: Soccer From: GUEST Date: 13 Feb 03 - 09:09 AM Shame Beccy. I won't say it's my favourite game to watch but I'm able to enjoy watching a variety of ball games including football, rugby and cricket. American Football is the one that bores me to tears. They seem to spend more time stopping, switching players, discussing what they are going to do, etc. than getting on with the game. One of the most exciting to me sadly hardly ever seems to get any coverage in the UK. That one believe it or not is Aussie Rules Football - a fast and furious game from what I've seen of it. Jon |

Subject: RE: BS: Soccer From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 13 Feb 03 - 09:55 AM As is gaelic football too, Jon. The term "soccer" should be left to rugby union types, who idiotically coined it to distinguish from their own game, which they claim to be football, though it has nothing to do with football. |

Subject: RE: BS: Soccer From: breezy Date: 13 Feb 03 - 08:10 PM so what, it was only to give the Euro-ozzis a match and to to play at West ham, where no-one wins at home anyway. It was a waste of time effort and energy and totally insignificant. Now basketball thats another game England cant even raise ateam while the Aussies are well ahead. This country has no sporting tradition nor Folk Tradition due to sucessive governments failure to invest in education in P E and Music. Its amazing that anyone does anything really. |

Subject: RE: BS: Soccer From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 14 Feb 03 - 02:58 PM Well Ausssie Rules Football is the best field game in the world, apart from Hurling. So I hope that ths kind of thing won't divert people out there to move over to Soccer, though that's a pretty good game. Still, I'm always pleased to see the underdog win, it's the best outcome for both sides. Being defeated by Australia is the kind of result the English need to have if they are ever going to have a chance of beating the big sides. And beating England is what the Australians need to be heroes, and to get confidence in themselves. |

Subject: RE: BS: Soccer From: GUEST,Centre back Date: 15 Feb 03 - 11:15 AM Do not dream of taking these friendly matches so seriously , those of you who have. The English prefessionals obviously did'nt, but, naturally the ozzies have that old "lets put it up the poms" attitude to their meetings with their old colonial overlords. It is also obvious that club before country is the emerging philosophy in lots of international sport of late. Lets wait for the next World Cup, shall we. |

Subject: RE: BS: Soccer From: diesel Date: 16 Feb 03 - 11:13 AM Jon, Try find out if you can recieve TG4 (Irish languge TV station) over the net or other. Aussie rules always there - but check it out for the Irish Gaelic games - Gaelic Football - (very similar to Aussie rules) or better still - Hurling - in a league of its own......supposedly fastst field game in world- but I'm open to correction on that. Brilliant game - watch out for it.. Diesel |

Subject: RE: BS: Soccer From: gnu Date: 16 Feb 03 - 11:44 AM Lucky folk you are. Even if I paid a bunch more $ for extra sports channels, I'd still get taped games and not even be able to follow any particular league on a steady basis. Basic cable : Rugby, one per week - taped. Aussie Rules, one game - the Grand Final - per YEAR. |

Subject: RE: BS: Soccer From: GUEST Date: 16 Feb 03 - 12:12 PM Thanks diesel. I know the people in the Irish pub in Norwich where we used to have a session sometimes had hurling on TV. I don't know what channel it was on though. We don't have satelite or cable at home. I think using the Internet for video would be out here. This part of North Norfolk is hopeless. Dial-up and 28.8K is the normal and there are no broadband options - unless one was to use a satelite link... Jon |

Subject: RE: BS: Soccer From: GUEST Date: 16 Feb 03 - 01:04 PM Gareth, Re-reading my previous post, I can see it may have looked as if I was gloating - sorry if that's how you read it. I was just wondering what's happened to some of our sports. I'm an England supporter as it is my country of birth but I lived in Wales for much of my life. My first spell there was between about 1967 and 1973. I look back at those childhood years and remember the likes of Gareth Edwards, Barry John, JPR, etc. Even as a rival supporter, I would like to see Wales restore their old pride. Jon |

Subject: RE: BS: Soccer From: ard mhacha Date: 16 Feb 03 - 02:07 PM Gareth, Bloody Wales blew all of our bets on Saturday, even England beating France and Ireland 39 Scotland 6, didn`t help matters as Wales had the bookies cheering a blowing away our treble. You can`t beat the bookie. Ard Mhacha. |

Subject: RE: BS: Soccer From: ard mhacha Date: 17 Feb 03 - 12:18 PM And on Wales again, what has happened to this once great Rugby country, I remember with pleasure the great, Barry John, JJ Williams, Phil Bennett, Gareth Davies, and those great Packs. Unlike England`s bull-dozers they won with flair, can`t imagine Wales great 1970s sides ever winning a game and losing out on tries like England did on Saturday, no wonder they wrote songs about the great Welsh teams of the 70s,their will never be there like again. Ard Mhacha. |
