Subject: Off topic Song Request - 'King Tut...'
From: The Walrus
Date: 13 Feb 03 - 04:00 PM

I'm sorry to place this off topic request here, but I don't know where else to ask.

I'm looking for a song from the 1920s (probably a jazz piece) called something like:

"King Tut, He ain't no regular guy"

The song/tune was mentioned in passing during a lecture on "Egyptonania" and its effects on furniture and decoration - I'm on a Restoration and Conservation course, so design history gets involved - so muggins here mentions "ephemera" and suddenly I'm asked to find if I can locate any details of the song (That'll teach me to keep my big mouth shut).

Does anyone out there in the Cafe have any ideas about this pease, please?

Regards

Walrus

I suppose it's not Dead Egyptian Blues, but it's a good excuse for me to call attention to it.
I love that song.

From the sheet music at The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music:

TUT-ANKH-AMEN (A TUT TROT)
Words and music by Laurena Van Valkenburg

1. Tut-ankh-amen reigned on earth three thousand years ago.
A great and mighty king was he, but now a relic show.

CHORUS: Poor King Tut, they put him in a hut
All paved with jewels and gold.
Ev'rything is out of style 'less it's just in from the Nile,
So now we'll have to Tut awhile.
Cute little Jeff will find that he is left,
Also Charlie and Mut,
For the latest feat, that has got 'em beat,
Is King Tut.

2. They opened his sacred tomb and brought him out to see
All the astounding wonders of nineteen-twenty-three.

Yes, I realise this is eleven years old, but it's been bugging ME as well. The answer is that it's "Tutankhamun King of the Nile" by Riccardo Wolf, an awful singalong disco number that seems to have been released as a self-published single in 1978. Youtube (did Youtube even exist in 2003?) has a clip of him singing it. Lyrics: "Tutankhamun weren't no regular guy / he could send you on a trip without you sayin' goodbye" etc.
