Ralphie - I am gutted that I wasn't nominated for Horizontal award. I will have to accept best club singer award as a consolation prize! I shall challenge Hilary next time I see her ( Thursday - Stortfolk - George 'El Greko' ) to a contest to see who really should have won which award!
Much love

Never heard of us in the North?

Mary used to live in the Ryburn Valley in West Yorkshire, where the Ryburn Three Step people hang out (Pete Coe, Johnny Adams, Chris Coe etc. etc.) and I've lived there for a while too - I was even in a band with a bunch of them, and we've done gigs in Yorkshire and Manchester...

Song Links - March 30 - details HERE - thanks for mentioning it.

By the way, what's a CD lunch?

Hi folks!
Thanks to Hil ( Guru) for putting my name forward - and correctly spelt too! I've kept out of this thread until nominations have closed, to avoid the accusations of self-promotion.
It is news to me ( and Anahata ) that he enhanced Breezy's singaround sessions. I was there every time and can vouch for him never singing a note. On the other hand , he played a few thousand of them - effortlessly on melodeon and concertina. What a musician!

Perhaps there should be a regional award. Some people just have no sense of humour.
Some drop off and expect everything to stand still till they re-awake.
Some folkies are still stuck in the revival period.
All things move on,
Heck I'm here on the Mudcat!!
Anahata gets my vote for coming to enhance the Blue Anchor song sessions and playing as both guest and floor artist at the Fantastic St Albans Friday club at the Comfort Hotel where this week its charity night in aid of M.S.
Among the singers are Graeme Knights and Hilary'pigs-bum-forwards' Ward.
Then there's George Papavgeris and Mike Sparks.
The Windward folk-duo
Plus Van and Chris
And more

Actually, though nominations officially closed on 24th Feb. I was taking them until I posted the list on 10th March. Almost a month.

If you think you need longer, why not nominate something now? ... simply add a letter to your nimination and people can vote for it.

I don't have any problems.

Why was there such a short lead time for nominations?   I am sure thare are lots of british folkies from places other than around St Albans who would have put in a nominations for various catagories especially those of clubs and festivals. It seems a little odd to have just one catagory to cover all folk fectival from the big commercial ones such as Broadstairs to the small folk weekends such as Crediton, Miskin, or Grove, none of which had a mention.

Having only just opened this thread I find I have missed the deadline. I would have placed Andy Barnes in the best drinker catagory for his ability to completely miss a camping stool by a couple of foot when trying to sit down, not spill a drop when "landing" on the floor, then carrying on drinking and singing as if that was where he intended to be all the time.

And where's the catagory for folk poet?

BEST PUB SESSION

"I nominate the Black Horse at Limbrick near Chorley (second Tuesday) as the best pub session. I've only been there once (Jan) but it were brill!"

Can I second that.

I help run a FC 15 miles away and I still think that the above is true.

I will nominate for best session(though not a pub-session) the asylum-seekers hostel in Stoke on Thursday nights(I will not be more specific on the address): where I have had the privilege over the last year of hearing fantastic music from Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Armenia, Russia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Albania, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Zimbabwe, Turkey and probably a few others I have forgotten(and England too, come to think of it). No venue, club or festival has to my knowledge come near to presenting a fraction of what I have heard there.

I'll go with George's slow players session at Whitby because George is a mate and I am a slow player.

Come on Steve while we are on self promotion let's have the best club, 'The Bothy in Southport' (You are a resident after all).
Best fest has to be Whitby.
There are so many contenders for the other honours. John Kirkpatrick, Pete Coe & Pete Morton is a jolly good chap don't you know.
One of the best non commercial C.D.s I have is a home made one for a fiver by Tony Wilson.
Cheers
Les

..and I'm inclined to put in a shameless self-plug for Schantieman in the Singer category!

Shameless self-promotion coming up. For Best Pub Session, the Friday night Press Room Gathering; about nineteen years old, sometimes chaotic, frequently noisy, but overall as good a mix of songs and tunes as one could wish for. Also a meeting place for Mudcatters from around the world -- Tom

Mudcat 2003 Alternative British Folk Awards

If the BBC can be the arbiter of good taste in folk, so can we...

To misquote the Radio 2 site.

March 2003 sees the first year of the Mudcat 2003 Alternative British Folk Awards. Not a prestigious event, but one which celebrates the past year in the world of cyber-assisted folk music. A completely undemocratic and non-representational group of Mudcat members will shortly be voting to pick a winner in each of the categories below.

Nominations are welcomed under each of the following categories (if I've missed any, or you'd like to see non-music items - "best dance group", "best folk drama group" or whatever, please let me know) by next Friday (21st February). Please try to be adventurous!

  • PUB / CLUB FOLK SINGER OF THE YEAR
  • PUB / CLUB MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR
  • BEST "NON COMMERCIAL" GROUP / DUO
  • BEST "NON COMMERCIAL" CD
  • HORIZONTAL AWARD (Best drinker)
  • BEST FOLK CLUB
  • BEST PUB SESSION

;-)
