From: Rapparee

Several times I've heard a song that goes something like

"The eagle is hurt, her feathers are ruffled"

and continues in a jingoistic vein that "America will do what she needs to do."

Does anyone have the complete lyrics? A search of the Forum, DT, Google, and Metacrawler come up with nothing.

Subject: ADDPOP: The Eagle (recorded by Waylon Jennings)
From: delphinium
Date: 16 Feb 03 - 10:51 AM

Is it Waylon Jenning's "The Eagle" -

The Eagle - Written by Hank Cochran, Red Lane and Mack Vickery.
(© Tree Publishing Company.)
Recorded by Wayne Jennings on "The Eagle", © 1990, Epic.

Lord knows I am peaceful,
When I'm left alone.
I've always been an eagle,
Been a while since I have flown.
My claws are sharp as ever,
So is my eagle eye.
Something's gonna go tonight,
When the eagle flies.

Lately I've heard rumors,
That the eagle may be lame.
Just because I've been idle,
Don't mean that I'm tame.
You've jeopardized my freedom,
My natural place to roost.
I can fly if I have to,
If they turn the eagle loose.

So lay all your doubts aside,
When you go to bed tonight.
My feathers have been ruffled,
And I'm ready for a fight.
Just because I took a while to fly,
Don't mean that I don't care.
When you feel the shadow crossing,
The eagle's in the air.

So lay all your doubts aside,
When you go to bed tonight.
My feathers have been ruffled,
And I'm ready for a fight.
Just because I took a while to fly,
Don't mean that I don't care.
When you feel the shadow crossing,
The eagle's in the air.

When you feel the shadow crossing,
The eagle's in the air.

That's a good one, and I somehow missed it. But no, that's not the one I've been hearing. Thinking on it, I believe that it deals with the September 11, 2001 incidents and the response to them. Here's what I think the first verse is, missing some of it:

The eagle is hurt, her feathers are ruffled
Make no mistake she is coming for you.
...........
Time as you know it has ended for you.

The group might be the "Full Gospel Trio" but I'm not really certain of that, either.

COURTESY OF THE RED, WHITE, & BLUE (The Angry American)
Toby Keith

American girls and American guys
Will always stand up and salute, will always recognize
When we see ol' glory flying, there's a lot of men dead,
So we can sleep in peace at night when we lay down our head.

My daddy served in the army, where he lost his right eye,
But he flew a flag out in our yard 'til the day that he died.
He wanted my mother, my brother, my sister, and me
To grow up and live happy in the land of the free.

Now this nation that I love has fallen under attack.
A mighty sucker punch came flying in from somewhere in the back.
Soon as we could see clearly through our big black eye,
Man, we lit up your world like the fourth of July.

Hey Uncle Sam put your name at the top of his list,
And the Statue of Liberty started shaking her fist,
And the eagle will fly, and there's gonna be hell,
When you hear mother freedom start ringing her bell,
And it'll feel like the whole wide world is raining down on you,
Brought to you courtesy of the red, white and blue.

Oh, justice will be served and the battle will rage.
This big dog will fight when you rattle his cage.
You'll be sorry that you messed with the U S of A
'Cause we'll put a boot in your ass. It's the American way.

Hey Uncle Sam put your name at the top of his list,
And the Statue of Liberty started shaking her fist,
And the eagle will fly, and there's gonna be hell,
When you hear mother freedom start ringing her bell,
And it'll feel like the whole wide world is raining down on you,
Brought to you courtesy of the red, white and blue,
Of the red, white and blue,
Of my red, white and blue.

This one contains the "feathers are ruffled" phrase.

THE EAGLE
Hank Cochran
Sung by Waylon Jennings

Lord knows I am peaceful when I'm left alone.
I've always been an eagle, been awhile since I have flown.
My claws are sharp as ever; so's my eagle eye.
Something's gonna go to ground when the eagle flies.

Lately, I've heard rumors that the eagle may be lame.
Just because I've been idle, don't mean that I'm tame.
You've jeopardized my freedom, my natural place to roost.
I can fly when I have to; they've turned the eagle loose.

So lay all your doubts aside when you go to bed tonight.
My feathers are all ruffled now; I'm ready for a fight.
Just because I took awhile to fly don't mean I don't care.
When you feel the shadow crossing, the eagle's in the air.

So lay all your doubts aside when you go to bed tonight.
My feathers are all ruffled now; I'm ready for a fight.
Just because I took awhile to fly don't mean I don't care.
When you feel the shadow crossing, the eagle's in the air.
When you feel the shadow crossing, the eagle's in the air.

I recall hearing a Country & Western song in the mid or late 1950s called "Thank you, dear Gawd, for victory in Korea." Lots of "Red, White, and Blue waving o'er Seoul" and "that'll teach America's enemies!"

Serious song (seriously!). Not quite a C & W hit. It didn't get much radio play.

Don Firth:

The song you cite was a 1953 Jimmie Osborne number, on the King label, "Thank God for Victory in Korea." It followed up his 1950 hit, "God Please Protect America," whose chorus went something like

"Give us victory in Korea, and save our boys so fine.
God, please protect America in this troubled time."

I remember hearing the first one on the radio in the early 50s (but never heard the second). Moore & Napier remade it in their 60s bluegrass LP on King, "Country Music Goes to Vietnam."

Subject: ADD: No, No Joe (Hank Williams)
From: GUEST,Mike Rogers
Date: 08 Mar 12 - 07:14 AM

In 1950 or thereabouts Hank Williams(*) recorded
No No Joe, written by Fred Rose. Stalin was the target of this warning:

NO, NO JOE
(Fred Rose, recorded by Hank Williams)

Now look here Joe, quit acting smart
Stop being that old brazen sort
Don't you go sellin' this country short
No, no Joe

Just because you think you've found
The system that we know ain't sound
Don't you go throwin' your weight around
No, no Joe

'Cause the Kaiser tried it and Hitler tried it
Mussolini tried it, too
Now they're all sittin' around a fire and did you know something?
They're saving a place for you

Now Joe you ought to get it clear
You can't push folks around with fear
'Cause we don't scare easy over here
No, no Joe

What makes you do the things you do
You gettin' folks mad at you
Don't bite off more'n you can chew
No, no Joe

'Cause you want a scrap that can't win
You don't know what you're getting in
Don't go around leading with your chin
No, No Joe

Now you got tanks, some fair size tanks
But you're acting like a clown
'Cause man we've got yanks, a mess of yanks
And you might get caught with your tanks down

Don't go throwin' out your chest
You'll pop the buttons off your vest
You're playing with a hornets' nest
No, no Joe

You know, you think you're somebody we should dread
Just because you're seein' red
You better get that foolishness out of your head
No, no Joe

And you might be itchin' for a fight
Quit braggin' about how your bear can bite
'Cause you're sitting on a keg of dynamite
No, no Joe

(*) make have been under his Luke the Drifter alter ego.

Does anyone remember with nostalgia that great '60s hit "An Open Letter To My Teenage Son"? It inspired numerous "response" records which have mercifully been forgotten, but the original remains a howling 1960s kitsch classic.

Here are the lyrics to my own attempt at a jingoistic song, though I haven't gotten around to fitting tune to them yet. But maybe they would be better just grunted:

Mammoth Bone Stomp

Leader: I know I live in the land of the free
'cause it tells me so on my T. V.
Chorus: It tells us so on our T. V.
so we know that we live in the land of the free.
All: The land of the free
         on our T.V.
is the world's great vision of felicity.

Leader: I'll turn whole countries into mud,
since oil's a whole lot thicker than blood.
Chorus: Yes, oil's a whole lot thicker than blood,
so we'll turn whole countries into mud.
   All: Thicker than blood!
         Turn them into mud!
So you'd better just follow our directions, bud!

Leader: And if they don't do what we tell them to,
         we'll make them into barbecue.
Chorus: We'll make them into barbecue
unless they do exactly what we tell them to.
   All: Barbecue:
         that'll be you,
and your baby and your granny and your billy-goat too!

I also heard this song in 2003 or 2004 while driving around Cincinnati and listening to what I thought was a bluegrass station. The song sums up the climate during those years. I'm glad other people are looking for it. I would really like to have a copy of it.

I'm not certain it's the right song, but Charlie Daniels' "In America" mentions the eagle (link)

Since there's so much extraneous commentary, I'll consolidate what we know this song request is about from both threads into one message:

Several times I've heard a song that goes something like

"The eagle is hurt, her feathers are ruffled"

and continues in a jingoistic vein that "America will do what she needs to do."

Not sure if it's the Singing Cookes. They don't tend to be bluegrass, and though gospel is often heard on bluegrass stations, I haven't seen anything in their discography to indicate a song like this, though I can't rule it out.

Another close one, The Eagle by Ellis & Wince Coles, Canadians who wrote the song after 9/11.

Still don't think I've found it though

I am currently following a lead for this song -- waiting to hear back from the band, but I've got a high degree of confidence I've found the right one. I'll try and give them a call tomorrow if they don't see my FaceBook message soon. If they don't get back to me, I'll post the info for posterity, but I don't want to put out their info without doing my due diligence first.
