Subject: Harlow, Essex From: weerover Date: 15 Feb 03 - 03:18 PM My son is going to work in Harlow for a few months and is very into Irish music. Can McGrath (or anyone else from that neck of the woods) identify any regular venues for performances/sessions? wr |
Subject: RE: Harlow, Essex From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 15 Feb 03 - 08:39 PM I have just come home from a session at the Prince of Wales in Green Tye, 5 miles outside Harlow.. This pub is run by a chap called Wills who it would be impossible to dislike. He also runs a mini brewery and his pub serves the best of English beer. Wills is a fine singer and guitarist. His partner is from Ireland and plays a mean fiddle. There is a small monthly session there, and he willm tellm you of other sessions at benington And hertford. He is not a catter but he knows me as Keith, and he would be an excellent first contact. These are not Irish sessions, but a good mix of styles. Hope to meet your boy soon, Keith. |
Subject: RE: Harlow, Essex From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 16 Feb 03 - 05:42 PM I've got a website on which I've a page that tries to keep up with the sessions and that in the area round Harlow. I need to update it a bit, because things come and go, and for a time I had problems editing my site - but I'll do that in the next few days. Right now there's nothing in Harlow itself, though that could change, but a fair number within a few miles. As Keith said, the sessions around here tend to be pretty mixed up, anything goes. But it tends to be Irish music, especially when it comes to the tunes. He's not coming to the Newfoundland Campus in Old Harlow is he? I'd love to get a foot in the door there for a session. |
Subject: RE: Harlow, Essex From: weerover Date: 17 Feb 03 - 11:46 AM McGrath, Don't know exactly where he's going yet, but it'll be some sort of construction site (he's an electrician). Looking for gigs rather than sessions, he's not a musician: showed a lot of promise when first given a tin whistle, but anything that requires to be worked at seems not to be very attractive to him. wr |
Subject: RE: Harlow, Essex From: breezy Date: 17 Feb 03 - 11:53 AM The Folk clubs that attract people out of Harlow are Thursdays at The Vestry, All Saints Church, Stansted Rd, Bishop's Stortford and Friday at St Albans, the Comfort Hotel, on Holywell Hill. Both clubs are friendly and enjoy songs. More details in the Unicorn Folk Magazine about thing folk in herts,Beds/Bucks /Cambs and bits of Essex |
Subject: RE: Harlow, Essex From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 17 Feb 03 - 01:43 PM And a few more, notably in the Half Moon in Stortford, and the Brutish Legion in Waltham Abbey. And a fair range of sessions of one sort or another within a few miles. |
