Subject: Lyr Add: THE GIPSY GIRL'S DREAM (Balfe/Bunn)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 02 May 10 - 10:55 PM

From The Bohemian Girl: An Opera in Three Acts... music by Michael William Balfe, words by Alfred Bunn (Boston: J. H. Eastburn's Press, 1856), page 14:

THE GIPSY GIRL'S DREAM.

I dream'd that I dwelt in marble halls,
With vassals and serfs at my side,
And of all who assembled within those walls,
That I was the hope and pride.
I had riches too great to count—could boast
Of a high ancestral name—
And I also dream'd, which charmed me most,
That you lov'd me still the same.

I dream'd that suitors besought my hand,
That knights upon bended knee,
And with vows no maiden heart could withstand,
That they pledged their faith to me.
And I dream'd that one of this noble host
Came forth my hand to claim;
Yet I also dream'd, which charm'd me most,
That you loved me still the same.

From: GUEST,Lawrence Skarin

I DREAMT I DWELT IN MARBLE HALLS
(Michael Balfe [1808-1870])

I dreamt I dwelt in marble halls
With vassals and serfs at my side
And of all who assembled within those walls
That I was the hope and the pride
I had riches all too great to count
And a high ancestral name
But I also dreamt, which pleased me most
That you loved me still the same
That you loved me, you loved me still the same
That you loved me, you loved me still the same

I dreamt that suitors sought my hand
That knights upon bended knee
And with vows no maiden's heart could withstand
They pledged their faith to me
And I dreamt that one of that noble host
Came forth my hand to claim
But I also dreamt, which charmed me most
That you loved me still the same
That you loved me, you loved me still the same
That you loved me, you loved me still the same

This squares with Enya's version.

I don't get the Irish spelling, but the stage name of the singer is Méav, and there are recordings of "I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls" on two of her albums, the self-titled CD and "Celtic Woman: Celtic Journey." These are two different arrangements, and I think both are good.
Probably the easiest way to find them is to search for "Celtic Woman." I am sure there are many Mudcatters who may disagree with me, but I like all of the "Celtic Woman" recordings. They're not folkie pure, but they've very enjoyable listening.

I dreamt I dwelt in marble halls,
And each damp thing that creeps and crawls
Went wibble-wabble on the walls.          -- Lewis Carroll

Which they get to dwell in because they encourage deposits and discourage withdralls,... -- Ogden Nash

Maeve is, I believe, one of the much-maligned "Celtic Woman" singers. Google the term and you will find her.

I remember a fragment my mother used to sing, that started:

I dreamt I was tickling my father's bald head
With a drop of sweet oil on a feather,
But when I awoke, I found it no joke,
He was tanning my hide with a leather...

I came across a reference to a skit on this, turn of the 19-20th century, "I dreamt I dwelt on top of St Paul's", but have no other information. Anyone know any more please?

Brian Kennedy covered this beautiful song and some of its history in a recent episode of his excellent programme "Brian Kennedy On Song" which airs on Friday nights at 9:30 on BBC1 (Northern Ireland - I'm not sure about Beeb 1 elsewhere). Catch it if you can, and hope that RTE (and others) have the good sense to pick it up and re-broadcast it - it's a jewel of a show for anyone who likes Irish songs old & new.

I Dreamt I Dwelt In Marble Halls, from the Bohemian Girl, is a song I learned in voice lessons. It's beautiful. Alot of people became aware of it only after Enya's recording. I think in an older thread I mentioned that I am always reminded of the Laurel and Hardy film version of the Bohemian Girl,
