We're doing a summer-long 1930s revue. While a lot of it will be show tunes and "pop" tunes it would be great to include some "country" from the time. Any ideas out there on songs or performers? Obviously the material from "Oh Brother" would fit, but it is getting a little over done in some areas.

Try looking into some Carter Family recordings. They were popular with the "country folk" then. They recorded such popular songs as "Keep On the Sunny Side," "Wildwood Flower," "Oh Bury Me Beneath the Willow," and many more. The Monroe Brothers were also becoming popular in the '30's and recorded such songs as "All the Good Times are Past and Gone," and "Long Journey Home" and many old time mountain & fiddle tunes. These 2 groups represent the foundation upon which Bluegrass was built. Their contributions are beyond measure! How one could overlook them is unimaginable.

Anything from the Carter Family would be a great choice. I am a big fan of Charlie Poole, he might fit in with your theme well. He often used popular songs of the time and Tin Pan Alley stuff. Although he died in 1931, he helped lay the foundation for the newly emerging hillbilly record business; by the time Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family entered the recording studios, he had already sold a quarter million records.

I believe the biggest hit of the 30s was probably "The Great Speckled Bird" by Roy Acuff. Material by Vernon Dalhart, the Delmore Brothers, Uncle Dave Macon and the Skillet Lickers would fit nicely as well.

For guitarists who like the jazz chords from that era I can instantly recommend Ragtime Cowboy Joe as a pop song from mid twenties and Yip Harburg's classic 'Brother Can You Spare A Dime' - plus 'Nobody Wants You When You're Down and Out'. You could try a country version of 'Minnie The Moocher'

Or for something unusual try the original version of (Canadian) Smilin Billy Blinkhorne's 'Poor Ned Kelly' or the more hillbilly 'The Newtons Are Shootin Again'.

PS If you can handle vocal harmonies, I submitted a three or four part harmony for 'Roll Along Prairie Moon' which (I think) was done by Sons of the Pioneers as well as being a crooners hit in the 30's. I sent the MIDI to Mudcat MIDIs a few years ago and presume that it's still kicking around somewhere.

Bradley Kincaid did was on the radio and doing concerts in that period. His archives are with Berea College. You can find more about him at http://www.berea.edu/library/Special/saafindaid/saa13.html

Thanks for all the suggestions. We have a looooong list of pop and show tunes but want to add some country tunes and with the suggestions here it will be a lot easier. Thanks everyone.

A popular group from the 1930s, the Hoosier Hot Shots, had some classics such as "From the Indies to the Andies in His Undies", "I Like Bananas Because They Have No Bones", and "The Coat and Pants Do All The Work but the Vest Gets the Gravy". A visit to Google, using the Advanced Search, with the words "country music" in the box next to "exact words" and "1930s" in the box above or below will provide a multitude of sides to wade through and some good suggestions for songs from that decade.

How about Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys -- songs like San Antonio Rose and Faded Love?

And don't forget the "cowboy songs" -- e.g., Roy Rogers and the Sons Of The Pioneers: Tumblin' Tumbleweeds, Blue Prairie, Cool Water, etc.

Woody Guthrie was singing on the radio in the '30's. I don't think he recorded until later.

Lulu Belle And Scotty. I have two tapes. WLS Chicago. Hank Snow has some really great stuff. I will be 75 on Sunday. So I remember a lot of C & W from the mid and late 30's as I always had my ear to the radio. Your summer shows are probably over.
