Subject: RE: Kweskin's Back From: GUEST,Bill Kennedy Date: 21 Feb 03 - 03:33 PM looking at the discography it seems likely the Mel Lyman 'Birth' cd is the one I'd heard of, and it's not a cd of 'America'. |
Subject: RE: Kweskin's Back From: GUEST,Bill Kennedy Date: 21 Feb 03 - 03:21 PM yes, 'Jim Kweskin's America' is by far his best recording. I have three lps of it. some of it may have been released on a cd called the 'Lyman Family', or 'Mel Lyman Family', or something like that, but I'm not sure yet if that's true. |
Subject: RE: Kweskin's Back From: fsharpdim7 Date: 21 Feb 03 - 02:54 PM In the Passim interview Jim says that America was his best record - that's the one I didn't buy!!! Does anyone else agree with that? I still listen to Relax Your Mind - how can you beat that?? Chris |

Subject: RE: Kweskin's Back From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 21 Feb 03 - 10:19 AM I'm a great fan of the Kweskin Jug band (also Gus Cannon, Sunshine Skifle Group, Bluff City Backsliders, Red McKenzie & all those old washboard bands -Washboard Sam, Washboard Serenaders etc - as well as their UK equivalents) and came across this Japanese site which has a lot I've not yet come across.Japanese Site :Jug Band Record list RtS |
Subject: RE: Kweskin's Back From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 20 Feb 03 - 06:21 PM Thanks for the heads-up about the Rooney book, Fsharp. If it's "Baby Let Me Follow You Down: The Illustrated Story Of The Cambridge Folk Years" by Jim Rooney and Eric von Schmidt, it's on good old Amazon. I need some clickie practice so keep your fingers crossed and try THIS |
Subject: RE: Kweskin's Back From: fsharpdim7 Date: 20 Feb 03 - 12:49 PM I first saw the Jug Band in Chicago in the mid-'60's in some club on Wells (I think) that was an old church - very appropriate for the Kweskin congregation that traveled and performed with children and assorted others. My favorite jug band song is "Storybook Ball," a Billy Murray song from 1918 or so (once available from Billy in cyberspace in the glory days of Napster). Sure would be great if Rounder or somebody could do a Nitty-Gritty-Circle-type Jug Band project with Kweskin, Sebastian, et al. In the meantime, try the Todalo Shakers or the Juggernaught Jug Band! Any other good jug bands out there? Chris |
Subject: RE: Kweskin's Back From: Giac Date: 20 Feb 03 - 11:56 AM Hey, Chris, thanks for the link, but there were a few extra characters, try this: Kweskin Loves that guy, ever since the old Jug Band days. Mary |
Subject: Kweskin's Back From: fsharpdim7 Date: 20 Feb 03 - 11:45 AM I got a notice from Elderly about a new Jim Kweskin cd and found this pdf file on the web pdf file Hope that he will be touring. I saw him last with a group in San Diego in mid-'80's, and have been a fan since the first lp. If Jim Rooney's book on the '60's scene is Boston can be found, I recommend it. Jim, it will be good to hear you again. Chris |
