There's a current ad. on UK tv for a deodorant or perfume which starts with sound of a capella female voice singing "Another Man done gone". I can't get it out of my head. I know this is usually associated with Odetta but the voice on the ad. sounds harsher, I checked soundbite of Odetta for comparison. I see a Vera Hall is also associated with it on some field recordings but Amazon don't give a sound clip of her.
Any 'Catter have a positive ID?

Here, in the colonies, Bobby Bare recorded "Marie Laveaux", about a voodoo witch from Louisiana, which has that line.

He growls at the beginning of the tag line.

I've not heard the Ad (obviously, I'm in Oz), but I have a GREAT version by Linda Tillery with the Cultural Heritage Choir, which could fit the bill - but I know nothing about her/them, so ...

Cheers! R-J

I'm pretty sure it's Vera Hall's version - available on several recordings taken from Library of Congress (eg RA Sample on A Treasury of Library of Congress Field Recordings)

Hey Roger,

An outstanding version of this classic song is the one by The Next Tradition (Ken Schatz and Alison Kelley).

In fact, if you like this style, their album is a must-have for your library. Ask around the 'cat, you'll hear the same. I met Ken at FSGW a couple of years back (he and Barry Finn got me interested in prison work songs.)

Ken & Alison came to stay with us when they played a West Coast concert two years ago-- filled up our livingroom with some of the best music we've ever had here. They are a tremendous talent and we're all waiting for their next album...

You can order the CD direct from them by visiting their website at www.nextrad.com

Can you tell us anything about Vera Hall, when she lived. where, etc. This is a new name to me. Thanks.

At the risk of sounding like a snob, or worse, can anyone tell me how and why this powerful, amazing song has been coopted for a DEODERANT OR PERFUME COMMERCIAL?!?!

This may be a new low. Can't really be true...

There is a web site devoted to her with information at The Vera Hall Project which looks as though it's still being developed.

If you do a web search on her name, you'll find a few references to her (eg short bio at Vera Hall). She was recorded by the Lomaxes in the 30s,40s and 50s and there are issued recordings of her from the Lomax collection.

A great voice I think. Here's a quote from Musical Traditions review of Afro-American Blues and Game Songs which has some information about the genesis of the recording.

(Another reference suggest the song may be in Carl Sandburg's New American Songbag - I can't check this - I've only got the old one!).

Mick in Rhodesia (a village near Worksop, UK)

"Inevitably, Stephen Wade decided to include Vera Hall, but chose her other piece here, the lovely prison song Another Man Done Gone. He informs us, as Alan Lomax does not, that this seeming precursor to a blues standard (Baby, Please Don't Go etc.) was never in fact offered as an unaccompanied 'holler'. It was a blues the Vera Hall's husband performed with guitar; but her husband wasn't that present at the time, and John Lomax persuaded Mrs Hall to sing it unaccompanied, which she had previously never done for an audience. This is an interesting example of a controversial role often played by collectors. In this case, it must be said, the outcome was a happy one."

The best source of Vera Hall material on CD this side of the pond seems to be on a compilation called Deep River of Song: Alabama.

Can't trace the other thread, but having obtained the Alabama CD in the Deep River of Songseries I can confirm that the above song as used in the UK commercial, was the version collected by the Lomaxes and sung , as many on the CD are, by Vera Ward Hall.

Wow.
I listened to the stuff at the Treasury of Library of Congress Field Recordings site and it's amazing.
How can anyone listen to that and be racist?

Dani, much as it may seem a travesty, commercials have sccessfully revived the career of many a singer and musician, bizarre as it may seem!

All I can think of is a deodorant commercial with someone singing the variant lyric, "Lord, I killed another man," in the background!

Slighly off the topic, but while looking for something else, I came across this article on the work going into the preservation and restoration of the Lomax Archives: The Alan Lomax Archives - mixonline.com.
