Subject: RE: Lyr ADD: Soo Line / Fire in the Jackpine (Johnson) From: GUEST Date: 23 Jul 23 - 07:34 PM I lived in Marenisco when he wrote this song. I was working at the sawmill at the time. His lyrics hit home to me. He spent about two weeks with us and performed for free at several bars. He interviewed a bunch of us about the topic. Glad I found this tune. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Soo Line / Fire in the Jackpine (Johnson) From: Jim Dixon Date: 07 Apr 17 - 06:07 PM Apparently the same song that Art Thieme called SOO LINE was called FIRE IN THE JACKPINE by Craig Johnson. I just listened to the song at the link that Wally Macnow provided the link to (FIRE IN THE JACKPINE sung by Craig Johnson) and the lyrics are practically identical to those posted by Katlaughing above. However, Craig is inconsistent: he usually sings "down along the south shore" but once it's "out along the south shore." I don't think the difference is significant. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Soo Line (Craig Johnson) From: GUEST Date: 05 Apr 17 - 10:55 PM Hi I got to this thread by punching in the line 'like fire in the jack pines, mornin' is a-breakin'. I have been looking for a link for that song for literally years, probably close to 30 or better. Please let me know if you find out something. Love to play that, but it had some good lyrics, and it was at a time I didn't pay a lot of attention to those details, just absorbed the sound and played the licks. Very enjoyable song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Soo Line (Craig Johnson) From: GUEST,JMSails Date: 27 Jan 17 - 09:56 PM There is a nice version on Lee Murdock's CD "Loving Light". He also sang it at the 2017 Homecoming Concert. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Soo Line (Craig Johnson) From: Fortunato Date: 27 Feb 03 - 12:19 PM Craig, aside from writing a wonderful song, is one helluva old time fiddle player and a great singer in the Applachian style. And, I should mention, one of the nicest people on the planet. |

Subject: Lyr Add: SOO LINE (Craig Johnson) From: katlaughing Date: 23 Feb 03 - 11:07 AM Here ya go, from the booklet which came with Folk Legacy's tape of Art That's the ticket!: The SOO LINE (Craig Johnson) Like fire in the jack-pines Mornin' is a-breakin' Out along the south shore Down along the Soo Line. Day shift goin' down, The night shift's in the dry, Out along the south shore, Down along the Soo Line. I stopped in Marenisco; There's trouble in the town. Friday bein' the last payday; The mills are closin' down. Young men walkin' home, They got leavin' on their mind, Out along the south shore Down along the Soo Line. Old men on the highway, Their backs are bended down, Blackbirds on the barbed wire All along the cavin' ground. Headframes in the long fields, Ghosts of better times, Out along the south shore, Down along the Soo Line. It was midnight in them high hills; We were lyin' side by side, Waitin' for the moonrise, Warmin' to the wine. Gazin' in your dark eyes, Deeper than the sky. Leavin' in the mornin', Down below the Soo Line. (repeat first verse) Notes: "Here's another of Craig Johnson's vivid songs depicting hard times in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Craig now lives in Washington, D.C., where he performs an integral part of the Double decker string Band." |
