Subject: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 24 Feb 03 - 12:26 AM Joe - sometimes IE registers "one click" ...sometimes it registers "four clicks" and sometimes it registers "three groups of four clicks for a total of twelve."
Feed my paranoia....do the clicks indicate the number of clones watching a thread...before it is posted to the "Real Mudcat" and not the "Other Mudcat?"
Sincerely,
The idea is really simple actually. The more unique your visitors, the higher your Click Thru Ratio (CTR). The higher your CTR, the more sales your website will generate? |
Subject: RE: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Feb 03 - 12:33 AM Well, Garg, it's like this.... You lost me. Can you explain a little more? I'm quite sure we don't have the system you describe, but you have me intrigued. What's this bit about IE registering clicks? Gee, maybe I should get paranoid.... Or are you just trying to get our Paranoid Conspiracy Theory Guest going again? -Joe, befuddled- |
Subject: RE: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: Stilly River Sage Date: 24 Feb 03 - 01:12 AM Interesting. I went poking through my various menu options and don't see any way to see someone or something "watching" transactions (except the log, and I can't see that, Joe or someone on that end would see the logs). What kind of "click" do you have in mind? SRS |
Subject: RE: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: GUEST Date: 24 Feb 03 - 04:51 AM I'm baffled too but SRS, My ISP provides DeepMatrix Livestats. It is a lot more convenient than reading the server logs and you can see who is online (by IP) at any time. Sidetracking, I should give my ISP a plug as they are good... Folkinfo runs on the cheaper of the 2 "reseller packages" here and the Annexe on this "mono" package Jon |
Subject: RE: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: Bill D Date: 24 Feb 03 - 11:43 AM ummm...there seems to be a way of measuring, for business purposes, how many people visit your site...see http://www.ibizbasics.com/online031301.htm but I think you have to have special software to monitor it...and I can't see how .gargoyle would measure Mudcats...*shrug* you see, folks?...if you don't have enought to do with your days, a little focused paranoia can fill 'em right up! |
Subject: RE: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 24 Feb 03 - 10:14 PM Sorry, it is the derth of gigs.
Between December 01, and January 21 ...I have NEVER been busier.... now there is nothing to do but surf and contemplate the existance of the M.C....so turn up your speakers and listen to the "clicks."
The new-world economy (before the dot-com melt-down)was once explained as the difference between "mortor and bricks" being replaced by "websites and clicks."
It is possible to "tweak a system" so one "visitor" is registered as three or six or twelve.....so the resale value is increased.
I hear CLICKS do you?
Sincerely, |
Subject: RE: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 24 Feb 03 - 10:16 PM Yhep! This posting got two groupings of five for a total of ten - "CLICKS"

Subject: RE: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: mack/misophist Date: 24 Feb 03 - 11:36 PM Opera makes an event sound for each page loaded in a site. Could these be the clicks he hears? |
Subject: RE: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: Bill D Date: 25 Feb 03 - 12:03 AM I turned up the volume, put on my headphones, and loaded a couple pages in Opera...nothing...then it hit me....I went to the preferences menu, and note that it is a CHOICE whether to hear 'event sounds'...you have to both enable them, and choose which sounds to hear. Not knowing what browser garg uses, I hesitate to suggest he simply check his prefs....*grin* |

Subject: RE: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: Ebbie Date: 25 Feb 03 - 01:49 AM That's fascinating, Jon. I know nothing about this kind of thing. It says that there are 17 people currently on this site- does that mean on the Mudcat? No one in Africa or in South America... |

Subject: RE: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: GUEST,Jon Date: 25 Feb 03 - 05:19 AM Ebbie, I take it you visited the demo page from the link I gave. As far as I know that is monitoring thier own site. Another type of system I know of that allows you to watch who is on your site is humanclick. This one allows you to have a text chat with your customers. Jon |
Subject: RE: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: GUEST Date: 25 Feb 03 - 06:13 AM Oh and Ebbie, I find it quite interesting to see where the visitors come from. I got 6 continents last month but only 2 visits from Africa and 7 from South America. The surprise to me last month was that I got more visits from North America than from Europe. I think that is the first time that has happened. The membership, at a quick glance, still seems to be more UK people than anywhere else. I've yet to work out why folkinfo from day one has seemed more attractive to those in the UK than anywhere else. Maybe its the strong focus on traditional songs rather than things like Dylan, maybe its because I'm in the UK or maybe something completely different... Jon |
Subject: RE: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: Noreen Date: 25 Feb 03 - 06:43 AM Bruce- LOL! That must be it. Noreen (Have I clicked?) :0) |
Subject: RE: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: Noreen Date: 25 Feb 03 - 06:45 AM No, not a one... (BTW, in the old days when I was growing up, saying 'you've clicked' was the equivalent of 'you've pulled' today.) |

Subject: RE: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: GUEST,Jon Date: 25 Feb 03 - 06:48 AM To continue my drift with Ebbie over continents, have a look at our Events thingy. The picture is a more than a little distorted but I find it wierd we get so many entries for England and few from elsewhere. Jon |
Subject: RE: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: Cluin Date: 25 Feb 03 - 06:18 PM Just wondering, Gargoyle... did you have anything else running on your computer while you were on Mudcat? I was browsing through the forum here while listening to an Internet Radio Bluegrass station and there were several clicks happening in the background even when I hadn't pressed the mouse button. (I'm not sure about this latest upgrade of the Windows Media Player... lots of extraneous junk happening on it. Do we have to have pop-up ads every fucking time we do something now?) |
Subject: RE: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: Bill D Date: 25 Feb 03 - 06:55 PM well, Cluin, when Micro$oft is in the picture, I would not be surprised at anything! They are ahead of the CIA in wanting to track, control and limit what we do. Still, the people who make pop-up stoppers are keeping up...so far....there are various ways to keep the ads and popups from appearing. |
Subject: RE: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: Burke Date: 25 Feb 03 - 07:09 PM The clicks coming from my speakers when I was on the internet started to bother me just a week or so ago. I'm not sure what might have changed to make it more noticable; maybe I'd changed a volume setting. I turned it off: Start:Settings:Control Panel:Windows Explorer, Complete Navigation. Change to none. |
Subject: RE: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: Cluin Date: 25 Feb 03 - 07:16 PM Yeah, BillD, on the web, they're fighting the pop-ups. The latest ones I've seen are actually in the Media-player itself. It plays little MicroSoft commercial videos before it'll connect to the stations you want. I'm getting sick of seeing that asshole clown bouncing around to his heavy metal music in his car. There's no way to shut this shit off. You've just got to sit through it till it's over. Every upgrade leads to a new insult these days: nag screens, pop-ups.. It's a wonderful time we live, technologically-speaking, but do we have to have every free inch of the planet and every extra second contain an advertisement? |
Subject: RE: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: JohnInKansas Date: 25 Feb 03 - 07:27 PM A recent (2/25/03) PC Magazine article cites, according to some estimates, that 80% of all internet traffic today is email SPAM. (Other estimates vary.) Incredibly, one college professor reports that in his survey, 75% of respondents said they "enjoyed receiving" this stuff. 1.) 75% of those he surveyed have no life, or 2.) The sea-squirt story is true. John |
Subject: RE: Tech: JOE - Clicks on Mudcat - Just Curious From: Bill D Date: 25 Feb 03 - 09:00 PM arrgghh! IN the MediaPlayer? remind me to never upgrade! (I almost NEVER use it anyway...there are other applications that will play 'almost' everything) ....but I'm sure M$ is working on making sure all the important stuff is recorded so it will only play on something they control! |
