I have just lately become interested in tango music played on Guitar. Can anyone suggest some good artists or recordings? In fact I would be interested in any tango or flamenco music. Thanks in advance..

Thanks Alice, checked out that thread. It seems to have more to with singing and sheet music. I am primarily interested in guitar recordings.

check out Edmundo Ross. His guitar player was a friend of my teachers. It will tend to be the whole Latin genre though but still a start. Or check out the buena vista series. That will be various latin tempo's aswell. Oscar Aleman gypsy jazz guitar player plays alot of latin (being from buenos aires) he did do a couple of latin albums from memory see what you can dig out.

Oh Django played a couple and wrote a couple of tango's. They were popular in the thirties!

In recent years there have been quite a few classical guitar transcriptions of the tangos of Astor Piazzolla (the Argentinian tango king). Sheet music is available for quite a few (if you read) and some of these have been recorded, but I can't think of any devoted solely to tangos though.

Some of the gypsy guitarists of the 30s playing with the musette accordianists probably also have tangos in amongst the waltes, but again you'd have to hunt for them.

I should try the Argentinian section of a good world music record department.

What kind of tango music are you interested in? There are the classic dance tunes, which everyone knows, but there is also There is a tradition of Tango song, which isn't well known outside of Argentina, but which often is accompanied by some very good guitar music--I don't know much about this music(except that I love it) but I have a few recordings, and here are a couple people that I do know that often featured guitar: Mercedes Simone, who was generally accompanied by her husband, guitarist Pablo Garcia--Rosita Quiroga played guitar--her song "A Media Luz" is a classic--

These woman were classic singers who recorded in the 20's-50's, but there is a very active contemporary scene as well, I just don't know anything about it--

Paco deLucia might be right up your street. there is also a great album called In Search of Astore Piazolla. Yo yo ma did an album of Piazolla's music as well. Hope this helps.
