Subject: Tune Req: Auld Reel of Whalsey From: fiddler Date: 26 Feb 03 - 02:28 PM I have some dots for this...... I can't beleive it is a shetland tune - or that the dots are correct - Anyone but anyone with any knowledge it would be much appreciated. I've pushed it in to a notation writer and the results don't sound right! I don't think I was loosing my marbles and it appears I'm not so any help much appreciated. a |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Auld Reel of Whalsey From: Sorcha Date: 26 Feb 03 - 04:59 PM I have found that quite often, sheet music for tunes leaves out the . with a note. Tune is supposed to be played with a hornpipe rythm but is not actually written that way. Lots of Shetland tunes are on the "back beat" too. Could that be the problem with this one? (scan/e mail to me if you can and I'll look at it.) |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Auld Reel of Whalsey From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 27 Feb 03 - 11:18 AM From The Fiddler's Companion: AALD REEL O WHALSAY, DA. Shetland, Reel. D Major. ADAE. One part. "During a symposium at the School of Scottish Studies in the mid-1960's on Scottish, Shetland and Scandinavian music, the Norwegian Hardanger fiddler Magne Manheim pointed out that the Aald Reel o Whalsay closely resembled part of a Norwegian Halling, and it is likely that all the Muckle Reels were of Norwegian derivation" (Anderson & Georgeson, 1970). See also note for Muckle Reel o Finnigirt. Source for notated version: John Irvine (Saltness, Whalsay, Shetland) [Anderson & Georgeson]. Anderson & Georgeson (Da Mirrie Dancers), 1970; pg. 10. |
